What is the saddest non-Morrissey song you've ever heard?

I'd go for The End Of The World by Skeeter Davies

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0l-GpISGBFY

Although, spookily, she looks like Norman Bates' mother!

The Brenda Lee version is great too:

Why does the sun go on shining
Why does the sea rush to shore
Don't they know it's the end of the world
'Cause you don't love me any more

Why do the birds go on singing
Why do the stars glow above
Don't they know it's the end of the world
It ended when I lost your love

I wake up in the morning and I wonder
Why everything's the same as it was
I can't understand, no, I can't understand
How life goes on the way it does

Why does my heart go on beating
Why do these eyes of mine cry
Don't they know it's the end of the world
It ended when you said goodbye

Why does my heart go on beating
Why do these eyes of mine cry
Don't they know it's the end of the world
It ended when you said goodbye

Would love to hear Morrissey cover it

that song is sad, if only b/c it reminds me of the suicide scene in Girl Interrupted.

That's where I first heard it :it fits so sadly and beautifully.
A very under-rated film,methinks

Currently, Coca Cola by Brand New, Jesse has a heartbreaking voice. If anyone wants the superior studio version, let me know

Coca Cola at YouTube

There are blood and feathers
on my dumb paws
Now you ain't nothing but a dead duck
and i still ain't nothing but a hound-dog.

You seep in the windows and vents.
I lay in the grass and i lose your scent.
Well if God gave me grace, then why aren't a graceful?
My joints are froze, and old and idle.

If it's by air
then i don't want to know
If we all don't take cover
then were all gonna fall back in love again

You work late and fight off your boss
Your patient dies and you take the night off

They've worked out
all the bugs
so now if you have enough money
you can buy love

You file out your reception seating
While i sing sing sing
these ten lords still leaping
the mark on your breast from your baby, teething.
Well, give him my name if he is needing.

If it's by sea
then I don't want to know
If we all don't take cover
then we're all gonna fall back in love again

"Bless your beautiful hide."
and curse your god when your friends die.

That is a sad song but beautiful

I Want You - Elvis Costello & The Attractions

Oh my baby baby I love you more than I can tell
I don't think I can live without you
And I know that I never will
Oh my baby baby I want you so it scares me to death
I can't say anymore than "I love you"
Everything else is a waste of breath

I want you
You've had your fun you don't get well no more
I want you
Your fingernails go dragging down the wall
Be careful darling you might fall
I want you
I woke up and one of us was crying
I want you
You said "Young man I do believe you're dying"
I want you
If you need a second opinion as you seem to do these days
I want you
You can look in my eyes and you can count the ways
I want you
Did you mean to tell me but seem to forget
I want you
Since when were you so generous and inarticulate
I want you
It's the stupid details that my heart is breaking for
It's the way your shoulders shake and what they're shaking for
I want you
it's knowing that he knows you now after only guessing
It's the thought of him undressing you or you undressing
I want you
He tossed some tatty compliment your way
I want you
And you were fool enough to love it when he said
"I want you"
I want you
The truth can't hurt you it's just like the dark
It scares you witless
But in time you see things clear and stark
I want you
Go on and hurt me then we'll let it drop
I want you
I'm afraid I won't know where to stop
I want you
I'm not ashamed to say I cried for you
I want you
I want to know the things you did that we do too
I want you
I want to hear he pleases you more than I do
I want you
I might as well be useless for all it means to you
I want you
Did you call his name out as he held you down
I want you
Oh no my darling not with that clown
I want you
I want you
You've had your fun you don't get well no more
I want you
No-one who wants you could want you more
I want you
I want you
I want you
Every night when I go off to bed and when I wake up
I want you
I'm going to say it once again 'til I instill it
I know I'm going to feel this way until you kill it
I want you
I want you

I LOVE this song. I like the cover of it Fiona Apple did too.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EiOmhOumh-w

and that's it. Her version is so sad.

That Fiona Apple cover I Want You was heart wrenching to watch. Thank you.

Here's my pic. It always gets me. Think about it, is there a man out there worthy of this type of humiliation? I think so. Jolene by Dolly Parton.

Jolene, jolene, jolene, jolene
Im begging of you please dont take my man
Jolene, jolene, jolene, jolene
Please dont take him just because you can
Your beauty is beyond compare
With flaming locks of auburn hair
With ivory skin and eyes of emerald green
Your smile is like a breath of spring
Your voice is soft like summer rain
And I cannot compete with you, jolene

He talks about you in his sleep
Theres nothing I can do to keep
From crying when he calls your name, jolene

And I can easily understand
How you could easily take my man
But you dont know what he means to me, jolene

Jolene, jolene, jolene, jolene
Im begging of you please dont take my man
Jolene, jolene, jolene, jolene
Please dont take him just because you can

You could have your choice of men
But I could never love again
Hes the only one for me, jolene

I had to have this talk with you
My happiness depends on you
And whatever you decide to do, jolene

Jolene, jolene, jolene, jolene
Im begging of you please dont take my man
Jolene, jolene, jolene, jolene
Please dont take him even though you can
Jolene, jolene

Guess who, covering Elton John's "Sacrifice":

It's a human sign
When things go wrong
When the scent of her lingers
And temptation's strong

Into the boundary
Of each married man
Sweet deceit comes calling
And negativity lands

Cold cold heart
Hard done by you
Some things look better baby
Just passing through

And it's no sacrifice
Just a simple word
It's two hearts living
In two separate worlds
But it's no sacrifice
No sacrifice
It's no sacrifice at all

Mutual misunderstanding
After the fact
Sensitivity builds a prison
In the final act

We lose direction
No stone unturned
No tears to damn you
When jealousy burns

"Luka", by Suzanne Vega. Although "Somebody Got Murdered" by the Clash, "Everybody Hurts" by REM, and "Somebody's Baby" by Pat Benatar deserve honorable mention.

There are a lot of songs that I personally find sad for my own reasons. In fact, I have an entire playlist entitled "Ennui." Here are two songs that are more general.

"Hurt," by Johnny Cash.

"Mad World," by Gary Jules.

I couldn't agree more. These two are the kinda of songs that when you hear them the time just stop's and you slip in to your own private vacuum. Beatiful. And both covers are better than the originals.

Nothing's the same. Gary Moore from the Album "After Hours".

A pretty haunting piece. (The music alone makes it universally sad).

there are tooooo many! but this one in particular just crossed my mind:

I love to see the cottonwood blossom in the early spring
I love to see the message of love that the bluebird brings
But when I see you walking with him down along the strand
I wish I were blind when I see you with your man

I love to see your hair shining in the long summer's light
I love to watch the stars fill the sky on a summer night
The music plays, you take his hand
I watch how you touch him as you start to dance
And I wish I were blind when I see you with your man

We struggle here but all our love's in vain
And these eyes that once filled me with your beauty now fill me with pain
And the light that once entered here is banished from me
And this darkness is all, baby, that my heart sees

And though the world is filled with the grace and beauty of God's hand
Oh I wish I were blind when I see you with your man

Its 'I wish I were blind' by Springsteen. Maybe its a bit cheesy, but who cares. We all feel this way now and then.

And of course, anything by Jeff Buckley counts, but maybe thats just due to the fact he has a tragic background. I can't even begin to list the songs that make me so sad, but these lyrics just came into my head right now.

"no surprises" - radiohead
