I would have thought it would be all Bon Jovi, all the time. Oh, and Poison. And perhaps some Springsteen. I lived in the midwest, we listened to Mellencamp. Who does the west coast have for uber-American, middle of the road, quasi-political rock?

No, I don't know if there's anyone like that. We follow all the same trends, only more shallowly and with better hair.
If anything the West Coast trafficks in upbeat pseudo-punk like Green Day or elevates otherwise vaguely political hip-hop artists like Tupac into folk heroes.
I'm quite proud of the Dead Kennedys but they're not exactly middle of the road...
