Ok American friends (and want other opinions too!) Vegas or New York?!

I've been to both. NYC has more culture; museums, art galleries etc.

My favourite place to drink was here:

I was lucky enough to stay outside of Vegas in the burbs and not some hotel. So, i only went to the strip once and gambled 1 dollar. I prefered Fremont Street.

Go to New York for your 1st time in the USA.

That bar looks amazing, especially since they play radiohead & pink floyd! My favourites.

I just hope my friends agree to go to New York, they have their hearts set on Vegas for some reason.

If doing Vegas, go here: vegas.com

Gives you flight/hotel info with prices, ratings, etc. Lots of coupons and other ideas as well!

I have to agree with the other posters, New York is an excellent choice for a first US vacation. :thumb: Vegas isn't representative of the best of America and is limited.

New York offers such varies experiences. You are interested in shows, New York has some of the best! If you can try to see a couple broadway shows (maybe off broadway) one high drama and one stomping old school musical. And the museums and the art galleries! There are also so many varied neighborhoods in Manhattan alone. You should cheek out Brooklyn as well, a neighborhood such as Williamsburgh.

The food is not just a myth, the food in New York is unbelievable. I would travel from England for a proper bagel alone! Aside from the bagels and pizza you can get top notch ethnic cuisines, Chinese, Japanese, Greek and Indian stick out to me.

You are also two hours from the Hamptons...perfect for drinking with the girls. And you are about 3 hours from the beautiful Catskill Mountains of upstate New York. You may not get upstate as you probably have about a week (if more, awesome for you) and the city will keep you busy. Upstate is beautiful through.:)

As others suggested, do your research before you hit New York. It is so big, if you just wander about you may miss the best of it. And yes it can be super expensive but with a bit of planning can be manageable. Look up reasonably priced neighborhood restaurants, you'll enjoy it more than tourist traps. Timeout NY is an excellent resource. Do go see time square, it's a total trip...just don't waste your dough there;)

Good luck:D It sounds like you have fun plans to make!

I would be so sad if her impression of America is based solely on Las Vegas. It would be like if I went to Europe and only visited the strip of shops that lead up to Buckingham Palace selling Will and Kate shot glasses and t-shirts.

I promise that wouldn't be my only impression of America.

I've got to get round my friends now, they are insisting on Vegas.
If we do end up going there as it is 2 against 1 then I will go the NYC with my boyfriend around Christmas time - I have always wanted to do that.

You should go to New York with your girlfriends and see the steps where Mr. Big and Carrie got married then take your boyfriend to Vegas and elope for real. :D

Go to New York. Don't do touristy stuff. Then get on a bus and go to Atlantic City, which is like a mini-Vegas with more creepy, decrepit charm. This way you get to do both.

I've heard that you need to tip loads in America, you have to tip after every single drink or meal and the people get really shitty if you're stingey or you don't tip. My aunt and uncle went to Vegas a year or two ago with their friends and said that they were tipping loads every single night on drinks then on the last night with the spare change they has left they said they just tipped with that maybe 2 dollars in change or something and the waitress actually said sarcastically "gee, what a great tip"

So yeah, if you're going out to restaraunts or bars have a lot of spare moolah on you...

Darn! Where were these loaded tippers when my daughter was a waitress? She would have been happy with a handful of change rather than the arseholes who tipped nothing. LOL 15% is the general rule, being the Mom of a waitress, I try to go more, but not at every drink refill or napkin given. If it's my birthday or a holiday- it's the waiter or waitress' lucky day! I think in Vegas since you may get a different drink waitress when you are playing a table or a machine, you are expected to tip every time (this is one more reason I hate casinos)

If you're going to NYC, ENJOY THE PIZZA!! :) And cheesecake....gotta have cheesecake. Be safe and have a wonderful trip . WELCOME TO THE U.S.A. NYC is very cool.

I know this is a parody, but this kid is from New Jersey...right next door and he pretty much nails the fun of NYC!

Statue of Liberty...you HAVE to check that out....and the Empire State Building!

I've been to Vegas twice and New York four times. New York has everything you could possibly wish to experience, it really is an extraordinary place. Vegas on the other hand is fake and trashy in comparison. Go to NYC.

I'd say if you go to NYC make sure you plan ahead. when I visited London a few years ago this made things infinitely easier. the partying we winged but we saw a lot of what we wanted. also stay away from touristy places. nothing but a hole in your purse. locally owned small places are your way to go. if you girls are looking to party I can't think of why you wouldn't visit the big Apple. Vegas is Good for a weekend you won't remember.

If you go to Vegas, buy your own alcohol from a store. I went in June for EDC and paid close to $30 for two Jack n Cokes! Ended up going to Walgreens (I stayed at Aria) and they had everything there. In Vegas you can drink on the strip which is a plus. I come from SoCal. I always pass up trips to Vegas with my friends since there's a lack of things to do. New York seems fun but expensive. I've been to San Francisco three times in the past 4 years. Everything is within walking distance. Just don't fly your Dodger blue there lol. San Diego would be a good choice too. Santa Monica also.

You don't tip as you go, you add 15-20% on the bill when you pay at the end. It's not that big a deal, just do it. If you can't afford an extra dollar or two per drink, you couldn't afford them in the first place.

New York is actually not that expensive if you stay away from tourist joints. I went to London and nearly died--it would have been crazy expensive even if the exchange rate were better. Paris was far cheaper.

Talk is Cheap.jpg

"Talk Is Cheap" by Keith Richards (1988)

Talk is cheap. So very cheap. Oh God, has it come to this?

If I owned a diary the title for today's entry would certainly be, "Talk is Cheap." You see, Bigmouth has struck yet again! It was thirty five days ago, in this very thread, that I relentlessly trashed the city of Las Vegas. My description of it basically characterized Vegas as having all the charm of a urinal mint. Vapid Vegas I called it. And yet as I sit here now I'm just one hour away from journeying to Sin City. Daddio & my StepMom are swinging by to pick me up. In just a couple of hours we'll be swallowed up by the night as we motor towards Vegas.

It was just four scant weeks ago, that the decision was made, to have our family "get together" in Sin City. Daddio, my StepMom, my Aunt from Detroit, and my Uncle's annoying wife all cast their vote for Vegas. My Uncle & I, being the only voices of discernible reason, suggested going to the Oregon Coast or the Redwood Forest of California. We wanted to go somewhere interesting, somewhere with fresh air. However, the majority ruled and vapid Vegas was penciled in as our destination. My Uncle & I were buried. Buried in the harsh sands of time and circumstance.

The hour is here. Vegas awaits. Its trillion tacky lights will be like a beacon in the night, as we traverse through the chilly Nevada desert. The words I scribbled in this thread thirty five days ago are meaningless now. I told Girl-Afraid that she shouldn't consider going to Vegas. And now here I am, actually going there. Tomorrow, as Vegas envelops me, I'll fully realize that my talk is cheap. So damn cheap.

Have fun......we demand a full blow by blow account of the trip here on Solo!

New York, but remember, it is ridiculously expensive there
as for Las Vegas, if you make it that far west, you might as well go all the way to either somewhere near my hometown Los Angeles :o
which has plenty to do and affordable places to stay
or
even better to go to is San Francisco, my 2nd home in America, it really is unfair to judge the USA without visiting that lovely city
and while it can be expensive to stay in as well
cheap places are to be had across the bay in Oakland, then "SF" is just a short ride, on the BART, away :guitar:
