Ok American friends (and want other opinions too!) Vegas or New York?!

Girl-Afraid

Least Likely To
My friends and I are planning to go to the US next year.

We're not sure whether to go to New York or Vegas

Both have their pros and cons but which is better?!

Need opinions and advice! :) thanks a lot in advance mateys xx

New York. Vegas is depressing after about 24 hours. All the casinos are owned by about three people and they all start to look the same after a while. And sad gamblers.

What about the shows etc? Any good?

My employer said she just went to see the Blue Man Group and almost fell asleep, and she loves that kind of stuff. I thought the Beatles Cirque du Soleil show was amazing, but it's expensive. You can see shows on Broadway for the same prices and not be stuck in smokey gross casinos the whole time.

Vegas... newish, cheap--unless you gamble, ugly, no culture other than the gambling/boozing one, and hot as hell from April-September. And, as CG mentioned, it all looks the same after 24 hours.

New York... expensive, big, too many choices--that can be a downside if you don't have a lot of time. But plenty of diversity, culture, and great food.

Go to New York.

True.
I'm leaning more towards New York because I have always wanted to go there since watching SATC. As sad as that sounds!

But my two friends are more up for Vegas. Grrr

I think I will have to persuade my friends.
They keep saying Vegas will be good because we can go to bars and nightclubs and pool parties in the day.
I'm not sure they know what it's really like lol.

Ya, Vegas is great for partying with the girlfriends. New York would be a great place to visit with your lover. Maybe go to Vegas this Spring. If you wait until May or June, you will be dealing with 110 F temperatures. Though, New York is hot in the summer as well.

That sounds good. Yes it would be with my girlfriends. So lots of cocktails etc.

As its a lot of money, I want to make sure I go to the right place! And not regret it.

You might as well do a day trip to Hollywood while in Vegas. It's about a 5 hour drive.

Go to Hungary instead!

No trash or anything and completely free from culture you did not wanna experience anyway. In USA you only get cockroaches and hassle and you don't wanna bring that home.

Reality & Crystal really hit the nail on the head. I've traveled to a lot of big American cities, and Las Vegas is my least favorite by a considerable margin. Reality is so right in calling it, "cheap...ugly, no culture other than the gambling/boozing one." And it's even worse when you're losing all of your money at the gaming tables & slot machines. When the money evaporates, the sadness takes over. Crystal is correct, "Vegas is depressing...."

I've never been to New York City. My Mom has been there three times and she says its absolutely fabulous. My favorite American city is San Francisco! A fantastic city in every way! I've been there twice. You, and your friends, should research San Francisco on the internet to discover all of the amazing things that it has to offer. Seattle is my second favorite American city that I've visited. I've been there three times and highly recommend it!

I hope you don't let your friends talk you into going to vapid Vegas. Honestly, I'd rather go to Detroit. I've been there three times and it's a city on the ropes right now. It's still light years better than Vegas.

I would go to New York. There is much more to do, see, and experience there.

Las Vegas is terribly overrated and when people say they are visiting Vegas, they are only talking about visiting one portion of South Las Vegas Blvd, aka The Strip. Once you get off the strip, the city is kind of run down and seedy. The only real positive I can think being in Las Vegas would bring is access to the Mojave Desert. Death Valley National Park and Red Rock Canyon are amazing places to visit and photograph, and they are reasonably close to Vegas. If you do decide to head west, fly into McCaren airport. You won't need a car for the city at all, but you will need to rent a car to get out into the desert.

Agree. I lived there for a year. Amazing everything! Food, the arts, music, weather, the ocean, mountains, the Golden Gate, friendly locals. A completely unique city, like nowhere else. America's little Paris but cleaner and more down to earth.

If she goes to Vegas, she will be left with a very bad impression of America. It is like Disney Land and McDonald's... corporate, cookie cutter, and tacky. San Francisco may not exactly represent middle America... where are the hillbillies, rednecks, and right wing nutjobs? But it does make us Americans look good. :p It's not a party town though. Hmm.

I just was in Vegas in May. Hadn't been since 1999. It's changed A LOT obviously. Some of the hotels are really sweet now.....Cosmopolitan....Wynn.....Encore to name a few. You can chill at the pools and then go clubbing at night, eat at nice restaurants, gamble, drink, etc. There are shows to go to, etc. Prices aren't too bad for flights/hotels.

I live in NJ......NYC is a lot of fun as well. Restaurants out the wazu, museums, Broadway, bars, concert venues. Culture overload. NYC hotels can get pricey.

I would probably lean towards NYC for a longer stay. If you are only going for a weekend, I'd probably go to Vegas and tear it up. Basically depends on how long you are going for and when.

Each city has its ups and downs. I've been to both and I love them equally. So...with that, I say go to Chicago! :)

Having been to both cities many, many times, and assuming you have not visited either(????) It depends on how long you are going or planning to stay, how flexible you are with regard to staying in a 'proper hotel', or if you are cool with keeping it simple to save some money for other things, and most importantly in my opinion, if you need to see the touristy things in each city. For example, if you have solid plans to see things like The Statue Of Liberty, Empire State Building, etc in NYC, or in LV, things like Penn & Teller, Hoover Dam, etc. Seeing these sites are expensive, and add up quickly. But for most people, they have to be seen. A bit like going to Paris and NOT seeing The Eiffel Tower. If you do not particularly care for spending copious amounts of money and time seeing these things, I believe you will have a far better time in Las Vegas. There is so much more to do now than just gamble, the restaurants rival any big metropolitan city, and LV is compact. You will spend a small fortune in NYC just getting from A to B. Trust me. Also, Vegas is far more accommodating and certainly more friendly than New York without a doubt. Ask anyone who has been to NYC multiple times, or anyone who lives there for that matter and you will hear the same phrase: 'New York is the center of the universe. We have everything here, and everywhere else sucks'. NYC obviously has cool things to do and see, but for me, my money, and overall reflection of the trip after I get home.....Its Las Vegas.
Hope it helps. safe travels either way.
Peace be with you.

Thank you for that :)

It's a difficult decision. I haven't been out of Europe before so it's a big experience for me.

If we went to Vegas it would be a case of one or two shows, maybe visiting red rock canyon, chilling out in the day, meals out and cocktails in the evening, maybe a nightclub/bar or two.

If we decide on New York it will be shopping in the day, visiting the sights and then the same sort of thing as Vegas in the evening.

We are going to spend abit but not a massive amount, considering we are only 3 girls in our twenties :p

Trust me on this, however frugal you are or intend to be, NYC will literally break you. Everything is expensive. Everything. If you choose NYC, do things like have a good, proper breakfast on the cheap, (IE: not in Manhatten, a simple coffee shop/café will do) and stay away from buying food or drinks in trendy, touristy areas. Fill your handbag or backpack with a bottle of water and some snacks before leaving your hotel, then have a small lunch, more store bought snacks, then dinner. Stuff like that will save you loads of money, hence more shopping.
Safe travels
