Where does Morrissey go from here?

How about a remake of "Indecent Proposal" where passionate gay lovers (Jonathan Rhys-Meyers and Jude Law) meet a suave older man (you know who), a casino owner in 1970s Las Vegas who runs a racy glam-rock cabaret while exploiting his powerful, secret Mob ties to rub out his rivals. In an Oscar winning turn, Morrissey would play the man as a cross between Malcolm McLaren and Marcel Proust. The couple catches his eye one day by the pool...that night after a show Morrissey wines and dines them before putting a lot of cash and an intriguing offer on the table...

wowww great script.
but instead of an intriguing offer , why don't we have you know who, murder the said couple in a very horrific fashion?
murder is sexier than sex dontchya knawww.

If Morrissey's still under Merck Mercriadis' management, hopefully Merck'll get a recording contract for Morrissey.
There's a rumour that Morrissey's going to sign to Warner.

Hahaha Worm, what an obscure plot!! I liked the mobster '70s Las Vegas casino owner, but not the gay scene, hahaha...

M. Mercuriadis left moooooooooooooonths ago Sanctuary and since Morrissey is still signed there, it's impossible his being currently managed by Mercuriadis, as far as I'm concerned. His managers shift all the time in Sanctuary: Jed Weitzman, Peter Asher, Jeniffer Ivory...

The possibility of signing a short/one-album deal with a big label?

Publishing a book of some kind? Sounds interesting..

Or perhaps continuing to tour and write as he goes along...

Collaborating with an artist already signed to a label for a one-off project?

An album of favourite covers (vocation vacation), or as someone suggested, acoustic...:p

However Morrissey seems to have a lot of enthusiasm for touring ROTT still, or they wouldn't have pressed ahead with the US tour despite the rumoured and real problems at Sanctuary.

I wouldn't be surprised if they introduced new material as they went along. Maybe we'll get to hear the song that might have become the Eurovision entry!:D

However, if the label does fall through there are lots of options open. The way music publishing is changing so fast... is it not possible that he could finance the recording of a new album and promote it and sell it over the Web. Taking advantage of the changes that denied a higher chart placing for the ROTT singles. There is a modest yet dedicated audience already established which would continue to buy any new releases. Also, from polls here it would appear that the age demographic of his audience is wide, attracting new listeners year by year.

In all I think there are many possibliities open and it all depends on how long he is willing and able to continue.

And perhaps a deal has already been done that we know not yet.....:)

Does anyone know how influencial Morrissey getting the Attack lable was in getting him to go to Sanctuary? I hope that hasn't spoiled him into not wanting to go somewhere if he can't have his own little space to control, he got a pretty sweet deal there .. I guess it made him feel good being able to sign bands he liked and be their "discoverer".

Heh. Okay, how about this?

A tale of international intrigue. The scene: a working class neighborhood in Santiago. A stranger appears. He is a middle-aged, debonair Englishman with a mysterious past. Wealthy but secretive. Everyone knows he is hiding something, but no one knows what. He begins to frequent local nightclubs and bars. Drinks heavily, down on his luck. All confidence gone.

One night, the Englishman sees a beautiful but sassy nightclub singer performing. He is enchanted. Later, on the street outside, she is attacked by a gang of toughs. The dashing Englishman, who was on his way home, fends them off. He takes her home (shabby flophouse) and tends to her wounds. They begin a torrid affair, despite their age difference. She is a humble secretary by day who sings at night for extra money to help her younger teenage brother, a nice kid who runs with a bad crowd and needs her guidance.

Sympathetic to her family situation, and enamored of her beauty, the Englishman's spirit is rejuvenated. He feels he has a new life. This whipsmart, wisecracking, romantic young girl has almost literally saved him. But although he is in love with the singer, she cannot get him to reveal his secret. He remains a dark figure, a question mark.

One night a crazed-looking tough guy, another Englishman, tries to kill them. They barely manage to escape in a car. Once in a safe place, and no longer able to hide his past, he confesses to her that he has left England because he was part of a gang of extremist animal rights activists. They blew up the empty home of a prominent MP who supported animal testing. However, before they could take credit, the activist group was shocked to hear the government publicly say that the MP and his wife (who vanished) were actually in the home. Even worse, they blamed the "murder" on Islamic terrorists to drum up support for the war on terror.

The activists try to blow the whistle on the government's lies, but no one listens to them because they're whacked-out left-wingers with zero cred. On orders from the Prime Minister himself each of the activists is murdered, one by one, in a series of "accidents". Only the older Englishman, the ringleader of the Tormentors (as they called themselves), escaped. Now he is in Chile, and sinister assassins have been sent from London to silence him forever.

The singer must make a desperate attempt to save the life of the Englishman she loves in his most desperate hour. With the help of her younger brother and some shadowy underworld associates of his, they go into hiding, on the run from the deadly, highly-trained British assassins right on their tail. Only her love can help him avoid certain death...

Fat chance! I've just seen too many Hollywood movies.

I haven't even mentioned the hilarious family comedy in which Morrissey has to save an adorable pug who swallows a roll of microfilm and evil North Korean spies want to carve up the dog to get it back. As he goes on the run to save the dog's life we learn lots of heartwarming lessons about animal rights-- and of course laugh as the feisty little pug (who can talk, and with Ricky Gervais' voice no less)-- cracks wise at every turn.

Hire me as your manager, Morrissey! A wonderful new career awaits you...!

It sounds nice, but Morrissey would have on the most obscure and remotely interesting people on the show. He seems to have no interest in the contemporary entertainment world. So it would get crappy ratings and be gon e in a few weeks.

Kumo

Damn harsh but true

This could be the start of a BEAUTIFUL fan-fiction thread!

I think he should sign for Warp and collaborate with Boards of Canada.....it could work if Moz was willing to record in a disused bunker in the Scottish wilderness.....

Personally, I would like to hear Morrissey doing a modern 'torch' album, subtle arrangments, maybe some choice collaborators, something different. As much as I like the 'pop' songs he releases as singles, they are starting to lose the excitement level.

Perpetual laughter!

What I wouldn't do to see some of Worm's initial suggestions come true. I agree that a reasonably positive shakeup would be fabulously interesting, though I'm not sure of the odds.

The "new" album will be in limbo, that's for sure. As I understand it, Moz was going back into the studio to record new material with Visconti when the current tour ends, and while that won't change, any plans of official release will.

Career wise, I think some of what Worm has suggested sounds good. However, a part of me doubts that Morrissey would perform well as host, I dont know, I just feel that he wouldn't find it fitting somehow. I might be wrong though, he seems to be genuinely chipper in interviews of recent, so perhaps things have changed and it could work out.

More interestingly though, what would any new material he records sound like? Tormentors, whether you loved it or hated it, brought a great degree of emotional closure to what has been an extensive body of work. So, where do we go from here? Where does Morrissey go after the likes of "At Last I Am Born" with his sound? It just seems difficult to fathom to me.

I don't think Morrissey will do anything else to chase fame if he doesn't sing or make records. I just don't see him as someone desperate to be in the public eye. When he's not touring or promoting a record news about him is very rare, the most we get is when a fan bumps into him in Sainsbury's.

The only thing I could see him possibly doing is writing more about music generally. He has a really distinctive prose style and I think he would see it as an opportunity to convince people about his favourite artists.

But I really want him to make more records because I loved ROTT and think there could be even better to come.

I just realized that we are talking as he were forced to retire from music!! I refuse to that... Anyway, would be beautiful to see Morrissey exploring other creative paths.

But I really want him to make more records because I loved ROTT and think there could be even better to come.

Absolutely! I just can't see him NOT writing, recording, and touring as long as he's physically able to do so. It's not what he does for a living, it's who he is. He seems to be touring now without any outside support, and I'm sure he'll keep going one way or the other. I hope Visconti was right when he said he thought they would do another album next year, and considering that the last new release was Sweetie Pie, I'm wondering if at least one or two new songs will be a bit more "experimental" than we're used to.

I think Morrissey wants to settle down and raise a family...

....

.....

riiiight.

New collaborators, new producers, maybe some unusual tours...might be very, very interesting.

This is terrifying. Will he have to write with Desmond Child? No, please never mention this again. ;)

fantastic post. bravo

i didn't thoroughly read this, but sanctuary isn't shutting down. they are only shutting down their US branch. branch isn't the right word, but i think you will understand what i mean.

Why doesn't Mozzer start up his own label? I'm sure he could find any number of distributors all over the world. Manager, A&R personell, artists, get that Julia woman to do something for once. He could use Visconti as the in-house producer and sign nancy sinatra, Damien Dempsey, NYD, etc. OR maybe a company will let him bring his imprint to an already established major/ large indie!

After such a fantastic comeback, regardless of what you think of Sanctuary, this is sad news. I'd hate to have to wait years and years for the next album.

Does he have to jump ship? Can a Sanctuary UK deal not work like his old Rough Trade / Sire arrangement?

I'm not a music industry insider, so that might be a completely naïve question - but why not?
