One of my most favourite items is the 1st LP in multi coloured vinyl
from Germany. Unfortunately I have only 6 copies of it. There are
500 copies. Anyone here who can copmlete the list with his copy ?

A few were signed on the label by all 4 band members and
given as gifts to close friends and Rough Trade employees
couldve picked one up from London via Record collector mag for £300
about 2 years ago but sorry to say i left it.

mine is #0419, which I picked up in Amsterdam in 1985 and managed to get it signed on the cover by Morrissey later that year

Hi,
I have a copy. The number is 40 something !! I'll have to check.
Now a couple of quick questions:
I have seen these for sale with or without picture sleeves. Were all 500 issued in a picture sleeve or not ??
Does the number make much difference to the value ?? Does it really matter if it is number 50 or 500 as long as you have one ??
Cheers,
Del.

the first copies i picked up without a picture sleeve,
when i found a copy with a sleeve, i thought first that
someone just add it to the record, just to make more
money when selling it. while i am collecting,
more and more copies turned up with a picture
sleeve, so it seems that a part of the 1st lp
official came out with a picture sleeve.

the numbers were printed onto stickers
and then stuck on the label, it doenst follow
that no. 1 was pressed before no. 500,
but its proximity to zero wont determine its value.
no 1 is even rare than no 500 !

nevertheless i of course would like to obtain
no. 1, but no. 1 probably does not exist anymore.

hope this helps.
Stefan

I've seen these with and without pictures sleeves, as well.

1 may actually be less rare than other numbers, even though it is he most sought after. Often times there are several no. 1's made; for bigwigs at the record company, and the artist. I believe there were 6 White Album no. 1's, for example.

Info from passionsjustlikemine.com (thanks as always to Stephane):

"Germany: Rough Trade Deutschland took special care in promoting the Smiths' debut album over their territory by printing a limited (400 to 500) and numbered LP on multicoloured vinyl (RTD25). The record was usually slipped inside a generic die cut sleeve showing the label, on which the series number sticker was applied. It must be said that some copies were distributed inside the stock sleeve. The record usually came with a one-page or a three-page press release. Some copies included 2 promo postcards".

Does anyone have the press release that came with it originally?

yes, you are right beau.

some copies of the 1st lp came out with
a glossy promo sheet and/or 2 postcards,
these copy havent got a sleeve.

in my opinion hihgly collactable and slightly
more worth than a copy witha a sleeve.

btw, who says that exactly 500 copies came out ?
i never saw a copy numbered over 450.
so its possible that less than 500 were
made.

For me it's the most beautiful Smiths item EVER....just needed to hold one of those in me greedy little fingers :o.

Will post pictures of mine tomorrow.

Stefan, du hast nur 6 Stück davon???

Stefan, du hast nur 6 Stück davon???

.... six copies should be enough.
show me one person in the world who
has got more copies and i will give you
one for free :))))

i will try to post the promo sheet and postcards
next days.

it really seems that the records was limited
to 450 and NOT 500.
