Italian music

Ciao ragazzi e ragazze!

I'm trying to teach myself Italian and would like to get hold of some good Italian rock or indie music to listen to so I can "immerse myself" in the language, but I don't know where to start. I remember contributing to a similar thread for french music which was very edifying and I know we have a very cosmopolitan community here so any help would be greatly appreciated!

Grazie in anticipo :)

Ciao!

Well is not exactly indie really but I alway liked this 60's singer, Nicola Di Bari.
Check him out he is great:

Also a great 60's female singer (I believe Mozzer likes her too, I gave him one of her 7 inches as a present in his gig in London Palladium, I hope he enjoyed that one), Rita Pavone, she is really, really cool:

And one of the best italian bands ever are Uzeda, just fantastic, but they sing in English (Maybe they have something in Italian too, I don't know):

Enjoy!!

I'll let you know if something else comes to mind.

Bona Drag (Whore In Retirement)

There was a beautiful girl, Pietra Montecorvino, who sang 'Luna Rossa' on Later With Jools Holland (She was on the same show as Morrissey) who has released several albums.

I've been trying to find a clip of it on youtube because it really was exceptional. I could only find this live version:

Her voice is perfectly suited to this song. The rest of the album is an acquired taste however.

Thanks guys. I've checked out all the links and it's a great start!
By the way, what do you mean about Spagna, j0wled? Is it that she sings in English?

avoid eros ramazzotti and laura pausini. i don't listen to today's italian rock bands, they're mostly very cheap imitations of american bands. i'm sure there are good ones as well but i can't think of any right now.
oh, mina is good too...
i'll post more links, tomorrow maybe.

Just a few more pointers for you to explore:

Marlene Kuntz (a band, not a person - my personal favourite)
Subsonica
Baustelle
La Crus
Afterhours
Bluvertigo (from the '90s)
Carmen Consoli
Cristina Donà

Happy listening

Welcome to the forums, SeaOfBlack.
The only ones I would save from that 'spaghetti indie' list are Baustelle. They are truly amazing, their lyrics are really, really interesting and filled up with an incredible amount of cultural references. Their song Alfredo almost made me cry, since I'm old enough to remember that tragedy in front of the television.

I would also suggest something from Lucio Dalla's early years, and a very underrated indie band called Diaframma.
