It's not so bad, unless you suffer from congenital Aucklandism. Westport is nice, you definitely need to try to get up Denniston on a good day.

There are active ones? But it's more about the open-cast "rape the earth" type. There is a museum about coal mining... I think there are abandoned mines further south near Greymouth, but I could be wrong...
Westport, is there an old coal mine by there?
