Todays Metro reports that sacked Libertines guitarist Pete Doherty was jailed for 6 months yesterday.
He was found guilty of breaking into lead singer Carl Barat's flat and ransacking it.
His lawyer had asked for a community sentence so that he could seek treatment for his £200.00 a day heroin habit but this was refused.

Celebs never seem to actually go to jail. Tis a shame that all this happened, oh well.

that's a pity.I hope he gets out after 3 and rejoins the Libertines soon enough, I reckon Up the Bracket is a terrific album far superior to all the other "The" bands currently jumping on the bandwagon. And they're great live too.

Which new "The" band is the most relevant ??

The Libertines, White Stripes, Hives, Datsuns, Streets, Strokes, Thrills ?? I haven't been following these new bands so can anyone shed some light?? ANy other recommendations? Most of you seem to like Interpol.....

the The bands

The Libertines - Up the Bracket is a stormer. Well worth buying. Always something interesting going on with the Libertines, such as he guitarist burgling the singer's house and being sent down.
The White Stripes - excellent bluesy rock n roll. Great live as well.
The Hives - not worth going out of your way to see. Some alright songs.
The Datsuns - "rock" from new Zealand. Dull as ditchwater.
The Streets - not a band. The Streets bloke, Mike Skinner is a Brummie with a dodgy Cockney accent who makes homemade British hip hop stuff. That might sound shit, but its not. His "Original Pirate Material" LP is excellent, but I know so many people who hate the Streets I suppose its all down to personal taste.
The Strokes - nothing you haven't heard before. However, their last LP "Is this it" was full of cracking tunes, I hope the new one will be similar.
The Thrills - zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Interpol - buy "Turn On the Bright Lights".

You might also like The Coral, The Rapture and The Raveonettes. Interpol are only just about OK IMHO - they were still very static and charisma-less when I saw them live (about 8 months ago) but they've supposedly improved. Soundwise, they're being widely compared to Joy Division and early (Movement-era) New Order but to me they sound more like The Chameleons (i.e. the UK Chameleons.)

Ian Brown did...6 mo. in Strangeways (yes, that one)

yes, The Coral and The Rapture are great. I haven't heard much by the Ravonettes. I also quite liked the Kills album.

Re: the The bands

Isn't it just Interpol, David, and not "The Interpol"?
I heard a track from the upcoming Strokes album on the radio a couple of weeks ago. I presume that it's to be their first single from it. I heard it and went "That's the Strokes, I know it. Huh?" And then when they said it WAS The Strokes and it was from the new album, I felt good because I had spotted them even though they seem to be going in a bit of a different direction. I wonder if that song was representative of the new album as a whole because it seemed very...Hot Hot Heat-ish to me. That whole early 80's thing.
And speaking of Hot Hot Heat, is anyone else reminded of The Fixx when they listen to them?

Re: mmm.. The Thrills have the most ironic name

Yep. Santa Cruz. You're not very far. So what?

Timbuktu, you are VERY far.

The Strokes new single sucks ass. I hope this is the end of their career.

Most overrated band of the last decade.

Ahhh. The Fixx has a new album out very shortly.

Saw them in concert about a year ago. They were really really good.

you're right Dumbledore. I know its just Interpol, but James asked "Any other recommendations? Most of you seem to like Interpol....."

So I thought I'd mention Interpol.

I'm quite looking forward to hearing it.

Re: the The bands

Go to their website. You can preview it there. But I'm warning you. It's crap. It sounds like everything they've ever done -- only not catchy.

I noticed when I was stateside that The Charlatans were called The Charlatans UK. Presumably because there's an american band of the same name? Is that the case?
And The Beat were called The English Beat. So is/was there an american band called that too?
And The Chameleons as well, which I didn't know. What are they called over there?
A few questions I know, but I'm feeling nosey today. I'm in one of my nosey moods.

Re: mmm.. The Thrills have the most ironic name

I fear that song is an experiment gone terribly wrong.

The only song I found on there is 12:51, which is the song I heard on the radio. I recognized it right away. Did you hear any others?
I dunno. I don't think it's too bad. I'd take The Strokes over 50 Cent and Evanescence any day of the week.

To the best of my knowledge, they're called The Chameleons here, too. I don't know of an American band called The Chameleons. I have seen them called The Chameleons UK, but only once:

Why is that nosey? There's nothing wrong with trying to learn new things or get some questions answered. Nosey would be: "So how many musicians HAVE you f***ed, D?" That's nosey.

Re: Which new "The" band is the most relevant ??

The Libertines, .. Londons finest.. Mick Jones is their producer (manager is he?) I think.. even so, a bit of punk spirit in their sound.. Check out 'What a Waster' and 'new single ';Don't look back into the sun' for other not on the album work..

White Stripes.. Hmm good stuff.. the drumming gets a bit repetitive though! Their cover of Jolene is worth having..

Hives, - I like them.. but not as good as some would say.. brilliant live..
Datsuns, - Great live band.. probably that's where these two bands excel.. Streets, - get the album.. if you're american you'll love the insight into British saturday night youth culture.. invaluable in that respect.. kebab house fights and all sorts in there.

Strokes, - great.. want to hear the new stuff to see if they can maintain their momentum..

Thrills - like tingle said.. ironic.. dull band live.. few good tunes.. Buy the libertines instead..

Interpol..... of course.. 'Obstacle #1 ' moves me to retro tears nearly!..

Incredible really.. Doherty was the personality of the band and he's f*cked it all up.. what a f*ckin waster as he sang! I saw them at the Astoria 6 months ago as a 5 piece and they rocked big time.. an excellent night.. and then at the Forum a few months later.. pretty undynamic even if the tues were the same.. you can't replace charisma can you.. It's what Moz has I suppsoe.. and that why we're here..
