Just listening to this again on Jose's show. I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but I've always thought it lifts whole chunks from Blondie's Call Me, especially Morrissey's intonation on "...job or lover that she never had..." which corresponds almost exactly with "...for your lover's lover's alibi..."

Morrissey does like Blondie, do you recall at the Troxy he repeated the lyrics:

'I am always touched by your presence,'

This was straight from Blondie's song, he was speaking directly with someone present at the concert . . .

. . . like the essay in the Tate book, it had extra sensory perception overtones . . .
 
I never thought it before you mentioned it but now you have I can't think why I didn't. I was a Blondie fan long before a Smiths fan but it just didn't come to me.
 
Pete - I was listening to 'Lifeguard On Duty' and the intro section always reminds me of REMs 'Near Wild Heaven'. Am I wrong?
