What is the saddest non-Morrissey song you've ever heard?

"For No One" by the Beatles

your day breaks
your mind aches
you find that all her words of kindness linger on when she no longer needs you
she wakes up
she makes up
she takes her time and doesn't feel she has to hurry she no longer needs you

and in her eyes you see nothing
no sign of love behind the tears cried for no one
a love that should have lasted years

you want her
you need her
and yet you don't believe her when she says her love is dead
you think she needs you

and in her eyes you see nothing
no sign of love behind the tears cried for no one
a love that should have lasted years

you stay home
she goes out
she says that long ago she knew someone but now he's gone
she doesn't need him

your day breaks
your mind aches
there will be times when all the things she said will fill your head
you won't forget her

and in her eyes you see nothing
no sign of love behind the tears cried for no one
a love that should have lasted years

Don't laugh, but 'Puff the Magic Dragon' reduces me to a quivering wreck.

What could be sadder than the innocence of childhood disappearing forever?

History Chimes: Echo & The Bunnymen

Bells
High on a hill
History chimes
And you want a new beginning
Tell me
In biro or quill
Your purpose and mine
Prove that our world is spinning
So
Here goes
Nothing better
And
Here`s to
Something else
Until tomorrow
But that`s another time
It`s just another time
It`s just some other troubled time
The seed
Grew up a boy
Turned to a man
Is this the world you wanted?
It seems
Under the soil
Over the sand
Not quite the seed I planted
I`ve seen you
And now
I know better
I`ve been you
Now I`m
Someone else
Until tomorrow
But that`s another time
It`s just another time
It`s just some other troubled time
Until
Tomorrow
Until...

PM Dawn---- When Midnight Sighs
Artist: Pm Dawn
Song: When midnight sighs
Album: Bliss Album? (Vibrations Of Lo
[" Bliss Album? (Vibrations Of Lo " CD]

If and betting on an if, and if that if might have a chance to survive.
It runs in to twelve different ways of existing each with capacity to change its mind.
The vibe says six, so be six, now it has a clone. That is a bit more feminine.
Pondering the paces of what's going down....life. And the greeting is, "Oh..its you again."
Now come the images so many images. The painful colors and the bliss like tries.
I'm taking notes till the end of theatrics, then it stops, ends, dies....
Whatever is whatever, it calculates the karma.
And tries to adjust as it inquires whats shaking.
But through no eyes, I could see the entity....crying.

(chorus)
I cry, when midnight sighs, I cry, when midnight sighs.
Let's pretend its true, no, facade. The vibe says seven, do I look surprised? No.
You, you're so disturbing. Anxious tears do these paint my eyes...Oh.
The mysterious fee no one sees. And no one tries. Whenever tangeble,
I'll fall out of love. But for now my mind isn't mine....Sporadic advice, never thinks twice,
But exotic thoughts conclude thgis frenzy. Pay no no attention to the scars.
However bright all the men see is precious you. Immaculate trues, Patient lies say,
"Prince your flying", yeah. But through no thoughts, I could see this concept crying.

(Chorus) x2

When midnight sighs, If about to be me it's. So the vibe say five.
I put on hooves horns and an attitude. And nochalantly find I'm alive.. twelve AM
I understand. I find the eight, too late, its gone. But I could see this woman crying
"cussing, crying, and carrying on...my God...."

(repeat chorus)

On just about any Cowboy Junkies album there are sad songs.
Even if it isn't sad, Margo Timmins has a way with her voice to make it seem sad.

A few of the real sad ones that come to mind:

This Street, That Man, This Life

This street holds its secrets
like a cobra holds its kill.
This street minds its business
like a jailer minds his jail.
That house there is haunted.
That door's a portal to hell.
This street holds its secrets very well.

That man wears his skin
like a dancer wears her veils.
That man stalks his victim
like a cancer stalks a cell.
That man's soul has left him
his heart's as deadly as a rusty nail.
That man sheds his skin like a veil.

Lord, you play a hard game
you know we follow every rule.
Then you take the one thing
we thought we'd never lose.
All I ask is if she's with you
please keep her warm and safe
and if it's in your power
please purge the memory of this place.

This life holds its secrets
like a seashell holds the sea,
soft and distant, calling
like a fading memory.
This life has its victories
but its defeats tear so viciously.
This life holds its secrets
like the sea.

To Love Is To Bury
I buried him down by the river
'cause thats where he liked to be.
And every night when the moon is full
I go there and weep openly.

He and I were married
by the river 'neath this willow tree
and with God and friends witnessing on
he pledged his life to me

To me he was earth, I rooted in his soil.
I to he was sky vast and free
of the burdens from which he toiled.

Then one night a terrible fight
words spoken better left unsaid.
With his wedding vows ringing in my ears
he gave his life to me.

They say to love is to bury
those demons from which we all hide,
but tonight by this river 'neath this willow tree
becoming one are earth and sky.

Witches
There are witches in the hills calling my name
saying come join us sister, come kiss the flame
Come dance in the moonbeams, ride the night wind
make love to the darkness and laugh at man's sins

I shiver with delight, I shiver with fear
my heart wants to go but my soul's filled with fear
So I turn to my lover and ask what do I do
do I answer their call or stay here with you

But under spell of deep sleep he moans and turns away
taking his protection and my desire to stay
So I rise to the hill tops, I ride the night winds
I make love to the darkness and laugh at man's sins.

Mariner's Song
The last of man's great unchained beasts lies lapping at my door
The last of man's great unchained beasts lies lapping at my door
I would give it what it wants, but I do know,
it would just ask for more

I search for you with every crest I ride
in every trough I travel through
I search for you in every trough I travel through
I didn't mean to leave you,
I unfurled my sail and the wind did blow
I didn't mean to leave you, darling,
I unfurled my sail and the wind did blow
Why why why why why, oh why I did not drop my anchor,
Oh Lord, I will never know

I search for you with every crest I ride
in every trough I travel through
I search for you in every trough I travel through

On the lee of the island I hear your voice deep inside the calm
On the lee of the island I hear your voice deep inside the calm
Whispering baby, I'll be your delight, if you promise
to be my red sky tonight
I search for you with every crest I ride
in every trough I travel through

I search for you in every trough I travel through
In the storm you are my destination, in the port you are my storm
In the storm you are my destination, in the port you are my storm
But I would weather you my love, if you would be my guide,
if you would be my stars in the sky tonight

I search for you with every crest I ride
in every trough I travel through
I search for you in every trough I travel through.

Powder Finger (originally a Neil Young song)
Look out, Mama, there's a white boat coming up the river,
With a big red beacon and a flag and a man on the rail.
I think you'd better call John 'cause it don't look like
They're here to deliver the mail.
And it's less than a mile away. I hope they didn't come to stay.
It's got numbers on the side and a gun, and it's making big waves.

Daddy's gone, my brother's out hunting in the mountains.
Big John's been drinking since the river took Emmy Lou.
So the powers that be left me here to do all the thinking.
And I just turned twenty-two. I was wondering what to do.
And the closer they got, the more those feelings grow.

Daddy's rifle in my hand felt reassuring.
He told me, Red means run, Son. Numbers add up to nothing.
But when that first shot hit the dock, I saw it coming.
Raised the rifle to my eye. Never stopped to wonder why.
Then I saw black and my face flash in the sky.

Shelter me from the powder and the finger.
Cover me with the thought that pulled the trigger.
Just think of me as one you never figured,
To fade away so young, with so much left undone.
Remember me to my love. I know I'll miss her.

Where Are You Tonight

Misguided Angel

Blue Moon Revisited (Song For Elvis)

This has to be the saddest song of all time. No seriously

Grandma, we love you
Grandma, we do
Though you may be far away
We think of you

There's no one quite like Grandma
And I know you will agree
That she always is a friend to you
And she's a friend to me
There's no one quite like Grandma
She's there in times of need
Before it's bedtime, on her knee
To us a book she'll read

Grandma, we love you
Grandma, we do
Though you may be far away
We think of you

And one day when we're older
We'll look back and say
There's no one quite like Grandma
She has helped us on our way

Grandma, we love you
Grandma, we do
Grandma, we love you
Grandma, we do

There's no one quite like Grandma
A love we always share
At party time and Christmas too
We know that she'll be there
There's no one quite like Grandma
She always has a smile
She never hurries us along
Just stays a little while

Grandma, we love you
Grandma, we do
Though you may be far away
We think of you

And one day when we're older
We'll look back and say
There's no one quite like Grandma
She has helped us on our way

Grandma, we love you
Grandma, we do
Grandma, we love you
And we know you love us too

Have you got that as a mp3?

I agree with Cut Here...but...

This Time Imperfect by AFI

I cannot leave here, I cannot stay,
Forever haunted, more than afraid,
Asphyxiate on words I would say,
I'm drawn to a blackened sky as I turn blue,

There are no flowers, no not this time,
There'll be no angels gracing the lines,
Just these stark words, I find,
I'd show a smile, but I'm too weak,
I'd share with you could I only speak,
Just how much this, hurts me,

I cannot stay here, I cannot leave,
Just like all I loved, I'm make-believe,
Imagined heart, I disappear,
Seems...no one will appear here and make me real,

There are no flowers, no, not this time,
There will be no angels gracing the lines,
Just these stark words I find,
I'd show a smile, but I'm too weak,
I'd share with you could I only speak,
Just how much this hurts me,

I'd tell you how it haunts me,
I'd tell you how it haunts me,
(cuts through my day, and sinks into my dreams)
I'd tell you that it haunts me,
(cuts through my day, and sinks into my dreams)
You don't care that it haunts me,

There are no flowers, no, not this time,
There will be no angels gracing the lines,
Just these stark words I find,
I'd show a smile, but I'm too weak,
I'd share with you could I only speak,
Just how much this hurts me,
Just how much this hurts me,
Just how much you...

leonard cohen - take this longing

Many men have loved the bells
you fastened to the rein,
and everyone who wanted you
they found what they will always want again.
Your beauty lost to you yourself
just as it was lost to them.
Oh take this longing from my tongue,
whatever useless things these hands have done.
Let me see your beauty broken down
like you would do for one you love.

Your body like a searchlight
my poverty revealed,
I would like to try your charity
until you cry, "Now you must try my greed."
And everything depends upon
how near you sleep to me

Just take this longing from my tongue
all the lonely things my hands have done.
Let me see your beauty broken down
like you would do for one your love.

Hungry as an archway
through which the troops have passed,
I stand in ruins behind you,
with your winter clothes, your broken sandal straps.
I love to see you naked over there
especially from the back.

Oh take this longing from my tongue,
all the useless things my hands have done,
untie for me your hired blue gown,
like you would do for one that you love.

You're faithful to the better man,
I'm afraid that he left.
So let me judge your love affair
in this very room where I have sentenced
mine to death.
I'll even wear these old laurel leaves
that he's shaken from his head.

Just take this longing from my tongue,
all the useless things my hands have done,
let me see your beauty broken down,
like you would do for one you love.

Like you would do for one you love.

Also the shirley bassey version of you'll never walk alone makes me really cry. Mainly because of hulmerist video, i find that bit really emotional.

Excellent choice about Mr. Cohen. I'm starting to realize and get interested in his music/emotionalism. Can you recommend to me any good albums to start off with?

The 1975 The Best of Leonard Cohen for his older stuff
an 1997's More Best of Leonard Cohen for semi new stuff

1979's Recent Songs also

yes, there are MILLION of sad songs. But what's most important is that some songs are "sad" for some people because they remind them of bad things, accidents, deaths (shall i go on?).. .etc. For example U2's Gloria does not sound sad to me. It sounds sad now that i have connected it to that person back then...

If any, Gloria is uplifting song as the whole(October) album - full of faith, mystery and the atmosphere.Very special and just few people know about it.
(even among hard core u2 fans)
