This section from the wikipedia article about The World Won't Listen specifically You Just Haven't Earned It Yet Baby confused me

The last line is the title of the only song on The World Won't Listen which was previously unreleased, the word 'maybe' being used because the song had appeared on bootlegs and test pressings prior to its official release, and thus some more attentive fans would have had it.

Anyone understand?

It was mistakenly (or not) pressed as the a-side instead of Shoplifters on some records - some said as an attempt to boost sales.

At what point does he say 'maybe'? I've just re-listened to it and can't pick it up...

Here's what PJLM says about the different versions http://www.passionsjustlikemine.com/songs-smiths.htm :

You Just Haven't Earned It Yet Baby {3:32}

Mispressings of the "Shoplifters Of The World Unite" 12" single
"The World Won't Listen" album
"The Sound Of The Smiths" [remastered 2008]
the edition of "Louder Than Bombs" included in the "Complete" box set

(version) {3:23}

"Louder Than Bombs" album
(except on the Rhino edition included in the "Complete" box set)

Note: The two versions of this song are almost the same. The minor differences lie in the production. The "Louder Than Bombs" version also fades about 9 seconds earlier. According to mastering engineer Frank Arkwright who remastered it for "The Sound Of The Smiths", the song on the latter compilation is slightly slower than any version previously issued, but this is not perceptible to the human ear and the timing remained the same.

And there is no mention of any use of 'maybe' in the lyric section http://www.passionsjustlikemine.com/lyrics/smiths-yjheiyb.htm

As far as is known, the song was never sung live by the band prior to the release of WWL http://www.passionsjustlikemine.com/live-smiths-stats.htm

Sounds like one version is shorter than the other, but no mention of a lyric change... and Stephane knows everything about everything.
