I have to second that recommendation. Definately one of the few British films at the time that almost stands up to what the Americans had been doing a decade earlier such as Angels With Dirty Faces.

Please give us a list then, when you have some time of the greatest British films ever made, so we can rent them from the artsy/fartsy video store and share in your knowledge and joy of these pictures.

Oh God I can never remember the names of films. This is a very good link to films that have influenced Morrissey and many of his fans.I would endorse virtually everything on here.:-

We spoke of "Kes" last week and I think virtually anything directed by Ken Loach veers towards genius.
I also have a soft spot for "Quadrophenia"

DAMN IT!!!
I saw it was on and forgot to set the video. SOME of us had to go to work today, Johnny.

Thanks for taping it for me, though

More than a "soft spot" isn't it J? You were creaming in your pants over it on here not so long ago, declaring it to be your favourite film of all time. Just because you get sex in an alley. Well, not you personally, but you know what I mean...

I DIDN'T tape it for you. It's been on telly twice in the last 6 months and if you can't get yourself organised enough to tape it then that is your tough titty

You're out the Mod closet then mate.. I was more your Black Rebel Motorcycle club.. and the wild ones in my younger days (did you see the Hells angels documentary last night) before i went style and got Mod interested!

Always liked Quadrophenia though.

Re: The Blue Lamp

Oo! One of the Ealing films isn't it? And the one that introduced the character Dixon of Dock Green, I seem to remember... even if he does get killed (very controversial for the time).

No, I didn't see it either. I don't have a working video at the moment, which is shocking. C4 show quite a few decent old films in the matineé slot.

Re: The Blue Lamp

They do indeed, but I usually forget to set the tape for them. Mind you, I don't get chance to watch TV these days. I'm too busy reading old music papers.

HAve you tracked down 'The Family Way' yet?

I just finished watching the Hells Angel documentary this morning Ruff. Pretty good and a little scary !

I am more of a Lambretta man myself though. Incidentally the Mod scene has never really left the U.K. It has been kept alive mainly through Northern Soul and Scooter rallys etc.

Edinburgh has 2 Soul nights a month which are always packed and are superb events. Also some good shops here stocking original Fred Perry,John Smedley and a whole other array of Mod gear. And of course the latest winter fashion is,quite ironically....PARKAS !!!

Do you ever go to Scooter rallys ?

There are always loads local to me at places like Skegness, Boston, Grantham, Lincoln and Cleethorpes, the east coast regions. I go along (in my car or on the train) to the arranged meets at some pub or other sometimes for the music and the crack, saw a great set from one of the Jam tribute bands 'All Mod Cons' last summer. And they usually have top notch DJs with a great selection of reggae, ska, and northern soul, but the right wing element among the scooter scene really pisses me off, you would have thought that the element of black culture within the scene would sort their heads out, but no.........muppetts.

Seen "All Mod Cons" . They are really good. I no longer go to scooter rallys so I can't say what elements they now attract.
There was always a few skinheads around and where there is skinheads there will always be a small minority that are racist.

I have to say though that the Mod scene in Scotland seems to be totally free of that particular burden.

You'll have to get Grim commenting on this.. he was a big bad mod, and often was seen with a decent sized scooter bewtwixt his thighs!
