Whatever happened to Paleface?

These two songs were big on Cleveland college radio in the '90s.

Was just taking a stroll down memory lane. Somehow I thought this guy would get big but I guess no one else cared.

PALEFACE: BURN & ROB (there's several versions of this song; this is my fave)

PALEFACE: WORLD FULL OF COPS

Yup, it's a world full of cops....on top of cops on top of cops...............................

I had a listen, Theo. Thank you.

I'm not familiar with Paleface. Was he local talent?

His humor and voice reminded me a little of Mojo Nixon,
and that's going back to the 80s.

Talk to David T. Maybe he would be interested in making
Theo's MP3s of the Day a benefit to subscribe to Moz-Solo.

Marketing: That's where my head is at.

Welcome back.

Anti-Folkster, Paleface

> I had a listen, Theo. Thank you.

> I'm not familiar with Paleface. Was he local talent?

No. I'm pretty sure he's from New York. Paleface had some connection with Beck before Beck broke big, but I don't know anything more. There was a local radio host who played him a lot. I bought two of his CDs and then never heard from him again. There aren't really a lot of music artists from Cleveland that I like too much, but maybe it would be fun if everyone posted a few songs from their hometowns!

I like Mojo Nixon!

I just did a Google and some site calls Paleface "anti-folk." I've heard this label before and I don't understand it. People apply it to Regina Spektor as well. (I like a lot...in case you haven't heard.)

Hmm,...Googling this....

=====
Anti-folk is a genre of music related to punk rock and American folk music that originated in the mid-1980s in New York City.

Anti-folk had its roots in punk rock, and is still considered by some to be an active subgenre within that scene. By a loose definition, Anti-folk combines the raw, abrasive, and frequently politically charged attitudes of the punk scene with the sounds of American folk tradition.
=====

And they list Beck, Paleface, and Regina Spektor amongst the examples.

Well, I'll be. Turns out I'm into "anti-folk" and never even knew it!

Or ABOUT your hometown...

OKIE FROM MUSKOGEE

We don't smoke marijuana in Muskogee;
We don't take our trips on LSD
We don't burn our draft cards down on Main Street;
We like livin' right, and bein' free.

I'm proud to be an Okie from Muskogee,
A place where even squares can have a ball
We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse,
And white lightnin's still the biggest thrill of all

We don't make a party out of lovin';
We like holdin' hands and pitchin' woo;
We don't let our hair grow long and shaggy,
Like the hippies out in San Francisco do.

And I'm proud to be an Okie from Muskogee,
A place where even squares can have a ball.
We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse,
And white lightnin's still the biggest thrill of all.

Leather boots are still in style for manly footwear;
Beads and Roman sandals won't be seen.
Football's still the roughest thing on campus,
And the kids here still respect the college dean.

We still wave Old Glory down at the courthouse,
In Muskogee, Oklahoma, USA.

THERE'S NO SURF IN CLEVELAND U.S.A.
The Euclid Beach Band

Intro: There's no surf in Cleveland U.S.A.

If you want to see tinsel and stars just go to LA
To ride a subway car try New York way
Well you can go to Philly anytime
If the Liberty Bell rings your chime
But we're all here in Cleveland, Ohio
And that ain't bad brother don't you know
Cause there's a party every night
And dancing till the morning light
There's such a lot to do

REFRAIN

Well we can cruise through the rapids(1) all day long
(day long day long day long)
And we can dance to the music all night long
(night long night long night long)
Now we can't shine down our woody
Or drive a board around all day
And man we can't impress the girls on the beach
The way they do out in LA
Cause there's no surf in Cleveland
There's just no surf in Cleveland U.S.A.

>From east and west and all around the town
We're a-ok don't let them put you down
The buzzard's(2) singing with the (chip up and down ??)
So clap your hands to the radio sound
Come on and sing along

REFRAIN sung twice

Fade out singing "no surf no surf we don't care" over and over

(1) Cleveland's rail public transportation system
(2) The cartoon "mascot" of Cleveland's leading rock station

WMMS FM 100.7 inspired by the buzzard nesting ground in

nearby Hinckley Ridge
