I believe the name "The Smiths" was intended to be the antidote to fancy band names like the ones mentioned on this thread. I love the "Smiths" name.

I also like the name Camper Van Beethoven, and their album entitled Vampire Can Mating Oven.

R.E.M. almost named themselves "Cat Butt," or something along those lines. That would have been good.

Actually Cat Butt was a name on this list for Out Of Time. The name they 1st used was Twisted Kites?? Also came up with Cans of Piss.

I think The Smiths was a cool name. I agree it was different from any band name at that time.
