The business news on the radio this morning - oh! such light relief from bombing Iraq - had a segment all about how Mick Hucknal/ Simply Red have put out his/ their own album 'Home' and expect it to go top 3 in the charts.

Apparently one of his business advisors convinced him not to get another record deal after he described in a presentation how the band had made £20M from 45M record sales and the record company made about £198M. I think the idea of cutting out the middle men must have appealed to 'Red' Mick.

It was said that they hired record industry people to do the promotion and etc and reckon they need to sell 1 million copies to break even - which they thought was pretty safe. The business guy said that this sort of scheme could only work with established artists who have a world-wide fan base and people who were financially secure. I think he mentioned Bryan Adams and some others in this context.

Morrissy, are you next?

would be great, but I'm not sure if Morrissey has the business-sense to do this....

um...Morrissey has never sold 45 million copies of his album, and i think it took Bona Drag about 10 years to go Gold. So, if it really does take 1 million albums sold to break even, he would be better off signing to a label and getting an advance.
