Hindley and The Smiths: art vs artifice

Found this article in the Guardian today and the reference to Suffer Little Children reminded how, at one point, Morrissey was capable of really connecting emotionally with others and could show kindness, warmth and compassion.

T-shirts with Myra Hindley on them? Modern art has forgotten how to care
by Jonathan Jones - The Guardian

Excerpt:

When The Smiths released Suffer Little Children, their song about the Moors Murders, they too were criticised for exploiting tragedy. And yet Morrissey’s lyrics do what images of Hindley cannot do, however clever the artistic manipulations of her photograph may or may not be. Morrissey imagines the ghosts of the murdered children speaking to their killers. His Hindley is a woman in hell, haunted by the innocents she helped to slaughter. Reading Morrissey’s words again after all these years reminds me that art can be compassionate: “We may be dead and we may be gone/ But we will be, we will be, we will be, right by your side/ Until the day you die.”

Well, Bunncini is Bunncini. He just is. There's a real zen quality to him. Guess what? Now he's a fan of Anna Netrebko and Elina Garanca. It's really beautiful to hear them sing together like that. Especially the part at the end. Very delicate and uplifting. The way they glance at each other. Voices in union.
Well my summer's be enjoyable so far. And yours? There's really been a nice stretch of warm and hot weather. The other day I was out walking, as the wind blew directly at me. It was the kind of wind that was almost strong enough to push me back, but not quite. I held my arms out slightly to the side, with my palms facing forward. It felt like swimming in wind. Cool lake wind on a slightly hot day. A simple thing, but very enjoyable.
I hope you like The Great Beauty. There's just something about it that I found unique. It has a real fluidity to it. It's cool that you can watch it on Netflix. I'm so out of the Netflix loop. I don't share that common bound that most people have, of watching the same shows.
This business with your eyelid does sound kind of jarring. I think it's perfectly normal to feel anxious about it. However, something that comes on quick like that, doesn't sound permanent. Is it some kind of sty? Had you been rubbing your eyes a lot? Have you been fatigued lately? These are things to consider. Give it some time to resolve itself. Are you sure that surgery would help? I mean, just as an example, have you seen Burt Reynolds lately? He's had some really unfortunate plastic surgery. It just doesn't look very good. Another quick thing about Burt. How is it, that he wears a toupee and still has dandruff? It's odd. Still, have you considered what a doctor might say. Don't you have free health care in Canada?
It's a lazy day. It feels like another Sunday because of the holiday.

oh right, you had a holiday! did you do anything special? watch fireworks or some such? im so over fireworks, they've lost all their novelty.
it's been a good summer. it's been cool so far, ive been very pleased! and there's been a nice quality to the air, such as is normally reserved for autumn air. ah, a cool wind on a hot day is divine. i like that kind of contrast.
no, i doubt that it's a stye because the problem is with both eyelids. what happened was that my eyelids had been extra puffy for about a week (i had eaten potatoes and i think im allergic to them, because this always happens when i eat them), and then i fasted, and then about the 2nd or 3rd day of the fast, the puffiness was gone, and instead the skin just looked slack, which has never happened before. it's possible (i guess), that it might still be some edema or maybe dehydration, but i dont have much hope. i cant really tell right now because my eyelids are a bit puffy again. i feel like i need to fast again to see what happens with them. the thing about eyelids is that they seem to set the tone for the whole face, and can really change the look of a face, which is also why this is such a huge drag. i look so homely and like my grandma with my eyelids like this. oh and yes, we have free health care, but i dont really have a doctor and so to go see one would require me going to sit for three hours in a walk in clinic just so that the invariably shitty doctor can tell me it's anxiety and send me on my way, as they do, as they always do.... sigh. anyway, that's boring.
lol! no i have not seen burt reynolds lately! who thinks about burt reynolds?! wait, i have to go look him up, i would so hate to be out of the burt reynolds loop...
okay, that wasnt anywhere near as bad as i was expecting. i mean the guys ancient! i cant even tell if he had plastic surgery or just has scrawny old man syndrome. i did in my research manage to see a picture of him naked on a bear skin rug, however, which i would have been happy never having seen.
and i have no idea how burt reynolds manages to have a toupee and dandruff at the same time, nor do i know how you would even know that, lol! gross. maybe they added the dandruff to the toupee for lifelikeness?
hey i have an idea! why dont we play the "who's your favourite 60's model?" game! :D

That was very kind of you to say that Burt Reynolds didn't look as bad as you expected. Burt would be pleased to hear you say that. He might even invite you to join him on his bear skin rug. Haha. Sorry, I couldn't help it.
My 4th was pretty mellow. I went and watched a amateur talent show at the park and then grilled out at my sisters. I've been trying to learn to cook tofu and yesterday we grilled some tofu soaked in soy sauce. It was supper salty, but very good. I'm to lazy to grill myself, so next time I'll bake it. I'm getting pretty good at baking BBQ tofu. I'm not much of a cook, but I'm slowly learning a few things here and there. I'm kind of bored with fireworks too. The thing is, there's a big fireworks display about once a week here. There's always different festivals going on and they each put on a fireworks display. I live close to the festival grounds, so I hear them more than I watch them at this point.
I was curious about something. Seeing as you live on an island, do you feel disconnected from the rest of Canada? I wonder if it might be a nice kind of feeling, being slightly apart.
That sucks that you're allergic to potatoes. Does that include sweet potatoes? Have you ever had sweet potato pie? Or sweet bean pie? I'm still on a quest for halva and I was told of a middle eastern store where it's sold. Can't wait.
Playing "who's your favorite 60's model" is Fun! And the winner is... Jean Shrimpton. She has that spirit of 60's freedom, without being to burned out. The three pics of her kind of en capsule the decade. Third pic is early 60's, kind of James Bond sleek. Second pic is mid 60's fun. Third pic is late 60's morning after kind of vibe. I have to say that the second picture of Penelope Tree is hilarious. I can't say exactly why. It's the way she's posing with her hands on her hips and especially the way her feet are pointing. It's almost like she's performing, even though it's a still picture. It's interesting to, how in the first pic shes got that sunny smile and in the third pic, she's got that burned out look. Well, I really like Veruschka too. The exotic first pic. Leopard dots on her face is a great little touch. I really like the second pic with the black sweater and white collar. It's a little 60's folk scene-ish. Of course the third pic is very sexy. On a bear skin rug. An ode to Burt maybe? Then of course there's Twiggy. I really like her third pic the best. She seems so nice. Well it was fun once again. I was also reminded of this song. Have you heard it? I'll admit when I first heard this, I thought they were singing about a actual tree named Penelope be and then years later I found out there was actually a model named Penelope Tree...

Well, I glad to hear you're enjoying the summer. Guess what? Yesterday I got a little sun burned and I kind of liked how it felt.

well it is confusing! whoever heard of someone with the last name tree? or the first name penelope? it's so fun, how there's the shrimp, the twig, and the tree. ive never heard that song, or that band. are they an old band, from that era?
i agree, jean is the best! one of the best of all time. though i really like penelope and twiggy for their quirkiness. i love that picture of penelope, she looks like a bossy child. also penelope has wonderful eyelids (waaaahh) i have no special affinity for veruschka but i think she is easily the most impressive looking. like i find jean shrimpton to be more beautiful than her, but at the same time in a more believable way. veruschka reminds me of an heiress or something. it is fun, i agree! it's nice to have someone to talk about models with! :p
you got a sunburn and you like the way it feels?!? what are you, boy, some kind of a weirdo?!?! hahaha aw you're terrific, bless your heart. i wish i had a sunburn too, so then i could say "hey i have a sunburn too!" and we could be sunburn twins. alas, it is not to be. but guess what?! im really sick! im not sure why; i just feel bloody awful. which considering it's me, confuses me. does that mean i feel good, or do i really just feel bloody awful? even im not sure! but best not suggest sharing burts bear skin rug at this point or i might just puke. you can take my spot on it!
i dont really feel disconnected from the rest of canada, no. though a lot of people here do say they feel that way, citing the ferry as being a nuisance. im not really fussed. it's a very big island--i mean it's not like gilligans island--so i rarely feel the need to get off of it, anyway. i lived up north for a few years--worst years of my life--in a city with snow for 8 months out of the year, and there i felt cut off, but not here.
someone suggested that possibly it's the starch in potatoes that makes me allergic to them, im not sure if that's true or not, but no i dont have any bad reactions when i eat sweet potatoes, which is lucky because sweet potatoes are much better than regular potatoes. never heard of sweet potato pie. sounds very 'down home'. is it good?
im glad you had a good holiday! what kind of festivals do they have there? do you ever go to them? i dont cook at all, ive never had any inclination to learn. you know how little kids--well little girls anyway-- always want to help out in the kitchen and bake cakes and cookies? well, i never had the slightest interest in any of that. also it seems to be one thing that i just cant learn, despite being shown how to cook things a million times. there are just too many variables when it comes to cooking and none of it comes together in a way that makes any mathematical sense. it might as well be alchemy. i heard once of a condition called an adaptive disability where you can be taught something simple over and over, like bricklaying, and still when you have to go do it yourself not be able to do it, and i thought that sounded like me, so now when people ask me if i cook i just tell them i have an adaptive disability :p
i watched the great beauty! it was really good! very fellini-esque. a movie that i think is best enjoyed in contemplation of it's ideas, and the spectacular pageant that is rome (i went to rome once, incidentally; as an excursion from vienna. i stayed a couple hours, decided i hated it, and took the train back to vienna. i wish i had spent more time there now). i really liked the lead actor in the movie, he has a wonderful subtle charm.

Why Yes. Yes it is nice having someone to talk about models with. It's very understanding of you to put up with my noviceness on the subject, but I really do feel like I'm making progress. For instance, I consider Jean to be one of the best I've seen also. Shrimpton twins! Twiggy and Tree are perhaps the quintessential swinging 60's models, but I really feel Jean could really embody any age. Well, they're all great. You're right about Veruschka looking like an heiress. Something I noticed was the bored look in her eyes. She's either bored or stoned or vacant or all of those. To be fair though, maybe she's trying to evoke the idea that being viewed as beautiful has grown tiresome and she seeks a more insightful gaze from the viewer. Jean doesn't have this problem. I see confidence and calm and wonder and surprise in her eyes. As for the song, Penelope Tree, it's one of the few Felt songs that I've heard. Sadly, I can't answer much more about them.
Speaking of models and film and the avant garde, have you seen Who Are You, Polly Magoo? I'm sure you must have, but maybe not:

I'm glad you liked The Great Beauty. I went back and watched it again myself. It's really captured my interest. I really think it's a masterwork of film making.
Sweet potato pie is really good. There used to be soul food pie place that made it the best. They also made a sweet bean pie, that was some kind of white bean. Also, a really good pecan pie. The pies were all very sweet and I'm sure not very healthy, but I wouldn't mind a slice right about now. Actually, I wouldn't mind just a good baked sweet potato either.
Well, Milwaukee has all kinds of fests. Irish Fest, German Fest. Festa Italiana, African World Fest, Pride Fest, etc. Right now is Summer Fest, which is basically just a two week music festival. I went the other night and watched Mike D from the Beastie Boys do a DJ set. It was weird, because he played a lot of EDM and current rap music that I didn't know. It was a bunch of kids smoking weed and taking selfies. Still, I kind of enjoyed it. He did play a few older jams and it was kind of fun just saying f*** it and dancing. Ah. why not. It reminded me a little of the party in the beginning of The Great Beauty.
All the fests are basically an excuse to eat and drink a lot of beer. Milwaukee in general drinks a lot. I drink a little occasionally. Don't really need to drink much anymore, I got that natural high now. Om.
So you didn't like to help in the kitchen as a child. What were you into? Were you to busy making your scrap books? It's cool that you travel so much. I'm sure you must have some great stories of your adventures.

i've actually never even heard of "who are you polly magoo". it looks good! is it?
haha putting up with your noviceness. it's not like im an expert, i just know names, but you're the one coming up with the good insights. i agree with everything you've said, especially the part about veruschka having grown tired of being beautiful. i remember once reading some famous critic or something comment on a picture of a young liz taylor. she said something like even at her young age you could tell that liz was already completely over her own beauty. and at first i thought that was really astounding, because i assumed that people who are truly beautiful must perpetually be in awe of themselves, but i think it actually must be the opposite, they must be annoyed at always being congratulated for something that is no personal achievement of their own. i had a friend once who was very beautiful, and she would occasionally make off-handed reference to this fact, and everyone took this as a sign of conceit or narcissism, but to me it was the opposite. why shouldnt she be aware of her own beauty, if the rest of us are? and why, if it's not that big a deal, shouldnt she be able to mention it? i think it would have been more insulting for her to have pretended she wasnt because that would've meant she thought what she had was so great the rest of us couldnt handle it if she were to be honest about it. i think that in a way boredom is the hallmark of great beauty. i think we should take this opportunity to talk about bridget hall, who was my first favourite model, and whose face is a serious work of art. she is one who has always had that "bored before i even began" look about her. and what i think is cool about her is that the way she dresses and presents herself in real life, if you didnt know otherwise, you might have no idea what a beauty she is. she's so over it. bridget at the height of her beauty:

what did you think was especially good about the great beauty? i mean, i really liked it but i'd have to really think about it to say why. i dont know enough about films or what constitutes masterworks to pinpoint anything specific.
ew kids smoking weed and taking selfies, not my scene. still all those fests, like the german and the italian one, sound like fun. wish we had stuff like that here. i think every place in the world drinks a lot :p
what was i into as a child? scheming. sitting around and trying to think up ways to get what i want with the least amount of work possible. same as i do now. i'm not very good at it though, my schemes never amount to anything. :p i was also under the impression that i was very crafty and creative and would make all manner of lame shit using glue gun and beads and scraps of felt and pipe cleaners. its only recently i realized when trying to make creatures out of wool using a kit i bought my nephew that i am in actual fact pretty awful at making crafts (my sister, on the other hand, who no one ever gave any credit for being good at anything other than being pretty and slutty, poor thing, was surprisingly skilled at it. i mean, she really put me to shame, so that for a moment my whole world view was in tatters. but then we played jeopardy and i beat the pants off of her and the natural order of things was thus quickly restored). what were you into, besides playing the harmonica? :p
i dont have that many great travel stories, im a bit of a drag when it comes to traveling. i go someplace and i want to go home, and then i come home and i want to go back. right now i wish i could travel (i would go to amsterdam since i have always rather unfairly avoided it thinking it was a place only for dumb stoners, but it has so many great museums), but i dont have any money and i wont for a while because i have to pay for eyelid surgery and also buy a winter coat, and it is all very sad.
now i want pecan pie, but i dont wanna go to the store, waaaah. also i should fast. but i already ruined my fast today by eating a cinnamon bun, which was not very fast-like of me, so this day is pretty much shot anyway...

i've actually never even heard of "who are you polly magoo". it looks good! is it?
haha putting up with your noviceness. it's not like im an expert, i just know names, but you're the one coming up with the good insights. i agree with everything you've said, especially the part about veruschka having grown tired of being beautiful. i remember once reading some famous critic or something comment on a picture of a young liz taylor. she said something like even at her young age you could tell that liz was already completely over her own beauty. and at first i thought that was really astounding, because i assumed that people who are truly beautiful must perpetually be in awe of themselves, but i think it actually must be the opposite, they must be annoyed at always being congratulated for something that is no personal achievement of their own. i had a friend once who was very beautiful, and she would occasionally make off-handed reference to this fact, and everyone took this as a sign of conceit or narcissism, but to me it was the opposite. why shouldnt she be aware of her own beauty, if the rest of us are? and why, if it's not that big a deal, shouldnt she be able to mention it? i think it would have been more insulting for her to have pretended she wasnt because that would've meant she thought what she had was so great the rest of us couldnt handle it if she were to be honest about it. i think that in a way boredom is the hallmark of great beauty. i think we should take this opportunity to talk about bridget hall, who was my first favourite model, and whose face is a serious work of art. she is one who has always had that "bored before i even began" look about her. and what i think is cool about her is that the way she dresses and presents herself in real life, if you didnt know otherwise, you might have no idea what a beauty she is. she's so over it. bridget at the height of her beauty:

It's been awhile since I've seen Polly Magoo, but it's about Polly's life as a model. I just happened to remember it and thought you might like it, because it involves fashion and 60's France and there's a bit of a fairy tale aspect to it. Trying to remember it now, I can recall that it's very visually fun. Like I say, it's been awhile, but if you decide to watch it, let me know and I'll re watch it too.
As for The Great Beauty, I wonder if the reason Jep never wrote another novel, is because he was to busy living a novel. While high society and it's players may have been a bit trivial, the access that it lent him was pretty cool. For instance, going on that "key" tour, where he got to look at all those incredible works of art and the fact that the rich had the art locked away for themselves. I wonder if Jep cried for the boy who died because he realized it might of been him, if he stayed on a certain path of life. One thing I really liked was how flowing the film making was. It really complemented the carefree life that Jep was living. I think it's a masterwork, because the director and cinematographer are on top of their craft. I'm interested in exploring some more of the directors other films (but at the moment I'm to lazy to google his actual name. Haha.)
Yes, I really like Bridget Hall's everyday look. I think she's just as attractive in real life. She has such a strong face and oh what lips. The first picture of her in the army jacket, with raindrops in her hair is pretty amazing. She's makes me think that she's playing the game and not that the game's playing her. Of course she's very beautiful as a model. That first picture looks like a painting. It's a picture of elegance. Then in the second picture, she evokes a more earthly beauty. I think I've seen that Vogue cover before. Is it considered a classic cover? What a nice surprise. I see why she's a fav of yours.
Here's a picture of my childhood. It's a great joy and regret at the same time. One day my friend and I found two boxes of vinyl records in the alley. A neighbor was throwing them out. There were some really classic records, like The Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, Sly and The Family Stone, etc. My friend and I decided that it would be fun to smash all the records. So we carried the boxes into the street and began throwing the records up in the air and watching them smash onto the pavement. It was so much fun. We had a ball, laughing and tossing records. We broke the whole box and left the street covered in pieces of black vinyl. Must have been over 50 records. Then later on that day, one of the neighbor's came to our house and told my Mom about it and of course I got yelled at and had to go and clean it all up. I don't even know if the neighbor's saw me doing it or if they just assumed it was me. Of course, years later I began collecting vinyl and regretted how dumb I was for breaking all these great records. Not just because I could have sold some of them, but because I thought it was almost sacrilegious to destroy music like that. Ah youth.
Sometimes when I'm getting ready to travel somewhere, I'll feel like I don't want to go and then I'll go and enjoy it and wish I could go back. It's weird. Sometimes the best part of traveling is the plane, train or car ride. I like being in airports sometimes. Well I don't know. I'd like to travel more. I really should take a trip to get some halva. Well, I will soon enough.
Well, keep on schemin' and dreamin'. I mean why not. Oh, you're good at Jepoardy? What topics are you good at answering? Hey, how about a daily double. Pecan pie and halva!

oh yeah, im the jeopardy champ! im good at every topic! well not sports, or american politics, though sometimes i suprise myself. and you can be sure i never waste an opportunity to gloat about my wins or to express incredulousness about how i knew some obscure fact ("how could i have possibly known that about erasmus?" you will hear me saying hours later). you'll find that my real talent is being constantly impressed with myself over absolutely nothing. oh i forgot, i meant to buy pecan pie and i didnt. oh well, i really didnt need it.
i agree, the method of travel is the best part! i love planes and trains, and waiting around in airports (well not the london airport because it's stressful and they always act really suspicious of me and ask me a million questions, like what criminal activity do they really think a nice mild mannered canadian girl is going to get up to in london?) . i really enjoy traveling by myself as well. and walking is even better when done in strange cities. berlin, you know, is really the best walking city. just the way it's set up, impossible to get lost in unlike paris, and you cant go a block without coming across some fascinating piece of history. where have you traveled to? if you cant find halva in your hometown then probably there's nothing to be done but to travel to israel and buy some!
ah, so you liked to smash records as a youth? hahah oy, what a pair of little brats. actually i could see myself doing something like that as a child. i was totally into destruction. it was your neighbours fault, anyway, throwing them out.
im surprised that you like bridgets everyday look! i was posting them, i think to show contrast, how she can look both beautiful and slightly homely (well that is, homely to the untrained eye, obviously she's still beautiful). i think the most incredible thing about bridget is her chin. when i first saw it in profile i was dumbfounded--how could a female have a chin like that? so prominent and square and the way the lower lip seems to rest on it. amazing. i think the vogue cover is a classic, it's from italian vogue though, which usually has really great artistic covers. i actually bought that vogue off of ebay years ago, for like $80, just for that cover. i didnt even keep it, i think i threw it out when i moved.
thats a question i never really thought about when watching the great beauty is why he didnt write another novel, although it was brought up again and again. i think you're probably right. a lot of artists i think would say that you have to choose one or the other; either put your art into your life or into your work (if given the choice, i would rather lead an artistic life than create art-- and i would, and i had plans to, but my eyelids waaaah). theres another film by that director on netflix (why dont you have netflix?!) called 'This must be the place'. i might check it out, even though i dont think i like sean penn.
polly magoo sounds great! i will definitely watch it. i'll let you know when i get it!

It's been awhile since I traveled. Four or five years ago, I was out in LA for a few days. Sometimes it's just nice to take a trip to up north Wisconsin. It's a real pretty drive. In my life though, I've traveled around. I been to Canada, but more in the Montreal area. People tell me I need to go to Toronto. Or is it Vancouver? When I see those people again I have to double check. Actually, my passport is expired, so I won't be leaving anytime soon. Two places that stick out in my mind from when I was younger are Morocco and Ireland. I only spent a day in Morocco, but it was fun. It's a super busy place. Ireland was really green and beautiful. Like a bright wet green. Sounds like you've traveled quite a lot. Must be nice just taking off on your own. Just walking around. Why I imagine the feeling you get is just as exciting as the things you see. Oh you make it sound so romantic and carefree. I really wish I could but at the moment I can't and that's just that. Ah, but one day. Oh, I hope so.
You know, the place I was told I could get halva is called The Holy Land, so while I won't be visiting the location, I will at least visit a grocery store of the same name. I really need to stop talking about halva until I get some. Let's just hope that when I put it on my dish, it tastes delish.
Well I'm very excited to be talking to the Jeopardy champ and very impressed that you knew that about Erasmus. What it is you knew, I'll never know, but the truth is, I wasn't even aware of who Erasmus is until I looked him up. Still, I like watching Jeopardy and it's fun trying to answer the questions. I'm not to shabby, but nowhere near champ status.
I wasn't sure if I was supposed to like the plain Jane Bridget pics, but I did. It does make wonder how models are chosen. I imagine most models submit head shots and glamour poses, so most of the work is done ahead of time, but the best people at spotting talent, must be able to see a gal with no make up and still tell. Obviously, a certain body type is desired. Shit, there has to be a whole industry devoted to that stuff.
The reason I don't have Netflix, is because I'm odd in almost any situation. I do still have my ways of tracking things down, so I manage to survive. So you're on. When you get a chance to watch Polly Magoo, let me know and I'll watch it two! (get it? two, as in second time watching it). Haha. Moan moan.
Thought you might be in the mood for some Savages. They'll be in Milwaukee this Sunday, so I'm kind of looking forward to it. I hope Jehny does some more of this stuff:

i know a lot of things about erasmus *smug* just kidding...
ooh so you've been to montreal? did you go to the biodome?! haha i think i must ask everyone who says they've been to montreal that, simply because when i went that's all that i remembered of it. that and the humidity. well, the biodome is pretty cool. it has capybaras, man! i dont know much about toronto for visitors. i think vancouvers probably the nicer city. i would love to go to morocco, the bazaars would be so cool! i really like morroccans, or at least i really liked all the moroccans in paris, the ones that follow you around trying to sell you gold chains that you would have absolutely no use for, they're so nice and fun. why did you go to morocco? i've never really been to the states other than seattle, but i've always wanted to go to the south, like savannah or charleston. where would you like to go, ideally?
you shouldnt leave being carefree for "one day", because one day never comes. or when it does youll wake up and have wrinkled eyelids and it wont matter anymore, because nothing does when you're an old hag. but i suppose working towards something and building a life for yourself is important too, and might mitigate the depressing effects of wrinkled eyelids. i wouldnt know. im a lifelong hobo.
which reminds me you should help me decide on my hobo coat!
im thinking this one:
https://www.net-a-porter.com/us/en/product/728154/Carven/wool-blend-coat
but it also comes in lilac! (the only shade of purple, other than plum, i can tolerate)
https://www.shopbop.com/boucle-coat...71&fm=other-shopbysize&os=false&colorId=94719
or there's this one which has a slightly different shape:
https://www.ssense.com/en-ca/women/product/carven/blue-wool-coat/1615223
or perhaps you think they're all hideous? well too bad, that's all ive got for choices. i feel like there arent very many good coats this year. sigh.
on the subject of models, most of them seem to have a better 'off duty' look than bridget. even in t-shirts and jeans and no makeup they can manage to look pretty chic. bridget has a talent for looking decidedly dowdy, i dont know how she does it. for example, lara stone looks amazing in everyday clothing:

Sure you're right. Carefree shouldn't be left for one day, but believe me I'm pretty carefree already. You know, I should really be more thankful of that fact. The thing is, right now I'm committed to finishing something. Something that requires energy and focus and determination. Things that take a great deal of effort for me. So for the time being I have to umm... wait, what was I talking about... oh yeah, I have to keep focus. Haha.
I was only in Morocco for a day. We caught a little plane from Spain. It was so full of life though. Little kids following you around, saying "hey Charlie Brown". So many shops full of rugs and little tables and food. Here's a funny little story. I was in high school at the time and my hair was spiked up. We were in this leather shop and this guy comes up to me and says "What is white out used for?" Remember white out? The stuff used for covering mistakes in typing. Well that's what I thought he meant, so I explained to him that white out was used to brush over mistakes when you typed something. He said, "No. I've been to LA and I know that you punk guys use it to get high." Haha. I guess because my hair was spiked up, he thought I was a white out huffing punk rocker. I just laughed.
Well, I'd like to go a lot of places. Paris, Melbourne, Tangiers, Hawaii, Berlin, Prague, etc. You can't expect me to pick just one, I get stumped to easy.
Anyways, enough of that. Let's get down to something important. Your hobo coat! I really don't think you could go wrong with any of them, but if I had to pick it would be the first Lt. Blue one. I like the color and length most. The longer Lt. Blue would be my second choice, but I like the length of the first one. I also like the sleeve length of the first one. The buttons are cool to. I have to say though, the picture of the longer coat from the back was cool. It really has a nice line to it. It's just that the first coat is more versatile. It can be casual or dressy. I see why you're impressed with yourself. You have great taste.
Am I supposed to pick my favorite dressed down model? Well it's Freya. I mean brown hair and black clothes are hard to beat. Still, I can't help but wonder if their dressed down wardrobe still costs a lot of money. Still, now I see what you mean about Bridget. She really doesn't give a f***.
So yeah, this is the first time the Savages will have come to Milwaukee. The other two times I've seen them were in Madison, which is the state capitol and more of a college town. So, it should be pretty fun. It will be interesting to see how many people are there. In Madison, it was in a small Salon, with about two hundred folks at the most. If I meet Jehny, I'll tell her that you think she's just ok. Haha.

oh water, I couldn't get on the site for days and days and days, it was awful. I thought I would never speak to you (or Morrissey) ever again. even worse, I thought I might never speak to skinny again. if that isn't enough to make a person despair I don't know what is (I can still only access it with one browser which I never use, and which is annoying because it keeps turning my non-capilatized letters into capitals. I didn't ask for that did I? hmph)
okay, where was I?
have you been to see jehnny yet?! when do you go? I want to know so that I can make a point of sitting at home and being jealous! also you will NOT tell her that I think she's just okay. I don't know how I would go on living. now if there's still time theres something very important I want you to do for me. I have a note I would like you to give to jehnny. just copy it out in your nicest handwriting and slip it into her hand. do you think you can do that? here it is for you:
Dear Jehnny,
I love you. you are prettiest lady ever. like a sylph from a mythical land where everyone wheres black. o beauteous sylph who puts the rest of mankind to shame! importantly you have a nice shape head. i think you can wear any haricut you like but water, the person who gave you this note, begs to differ. he thinks you look like a stooge with your bowl hair cut. thats not very nice. i would never say thtat about you, jehnny, because i love you to much, o lorelei of my heart. he introduced me to you though, so i am grateful. he likes hyour music better than i do too, but i am trying. he also alerted me to the charming way you say 'fings' instead of things. i havent yet decided whether im going to say 'fings' too just to be like yhou. i dont want anyone to think i have a speech impediment. you look so nice in black, did i say that already? you make me feel like it might be okay to wear black every day for the rest of my life if that is the curse that fate has allotted me (even though none can be as alluring in it as you, my sweet). that makes you my black hero. i would like to wash your feets with my hair, but only if you say it's okay, and only if morrissey is still continuining to decline my many genial invitations, because in truth his sexy dusty feets are the ones that i would ideally like to wash, and initially had my sights set on (do you think he has nice feets, jehnny? i imagine they must be like the feets of adonis carved from alabaster by the hands of rodin himself whilst being attended by the goodly muse, don't you?). please, let me know post haste whether this would be possible. i think it would be a wondefully spiritual experience for btoh of us, dont you agree? respectfully, rifke
well there. you don't mind, do you? that's a good lad.
yes, you do seem carefree actually, you are right. much more so than i am, who obsesses over everything. i overlooked that fact in order to use the opportunity to lament once more on my eyelids and how they ruin everything. im sorry, im a very one note kind of girl. i think actually that's why i like traveling, because it's like having the rug pulled out from under you, and I stop obsessing and being neurotic and am allowed the semblance of being carefree. anyway, finishing something, huh? sounds so mysterious! well good for you for being so committed. how long have you been working on it? is it to do with videos? is it going to be a masterpiece?!
of course i know about white out, people do still use it you know! i had no idea people ever used it to get high, well i learned something. i used to use it to paint my barbie dolls faces to turn them into vampires, so as you see, it has myriad uses. also id punch a kid in the mouth who calls me charlie brown. just kidding. well those are all good travel choices, with the exception of melbourne. i dont get teh appeal of australia. would you believe i had to look up tangiers to find out where it is? oh i am ashamed.
thank you for your input on the coats! I was in agreement with you but now I think I'm starting to like the longer one better. hmm, I shall have to think about it more, thankfully I have lots of time.
anyway, have fun when you go to see jehnny!!

I thought you'd bought your hobo coat and hit the road. Then maybe that the island volcano had erupted. Turns out it was a web browser. Well I hope you have it under control now. It sounds exhausting, but I'm glad you made it.
Well I haven't seen Jehny yet, but I can't wait to give her your note. Oh, how I wish I could see the look on her face as she reads it. I do think that she would be excited and sad. Excited that you'd be willing to wash her feets with your hair, but sad because she realizes that Morrissey is going to eventually accept your offer. I can just see you now, using your hair like a shoeshine rag, to polish his feet. I do want to make one small correction to your note. I observed that Jehny's bowl cut looked like Moe from the Three Stooges and/ or Friar Tuck. It's important that she knows the full breadth of my observation. Well, even if I can't get her the note, at least know that I found it to be very amusing.
I think I have a solution to your eyelid problem. Cucumber slices! Apparently it's beneficial to put cucumber slices on your eyes. I see it done all the time. I think this may be the answer. Why I only bring it up, because apart from that, you seem pretty carefree yourself. I do wonder though, where you'd really like to visit? I'm sure you have a list. Do you still write lists?
It's so adorable that you turned your Barbies into vampires. Did you use a marker to color their hair black? It sounds like a funny little short film, What Girls Did With Their Barbies. I don't think I want to know what you did with Ken.
Yeah, so I'm working on something, but I won't bore you with the details. It won't be a masterpiece, but it will be a piece of something alright.
Guess what? I finally had some halva. Pistachio. Very delish. It reminded me of something else, but I can't think of it. I was surprised at how dry it was. Still, great suggestion. I also bought some dried figs, which I also like a lot.

you thought i was dead and i bet you didnt even bother to sing me a requiem. no, web browser trouble is about as exciting as things get around here. until i become a hobo that is. but i will say goodbye and thank you for the lovely convo before i do that because that's just good manners.
no, mozzer wont accept and one of these days ill just stop offering, that'll teach him. no, i lied, the offer will always be there. i bewail that my hair isnt good enough to wash mozzers feet though. once upon a time when the gods loved me i had thick golden hair and everywhere i went people would tell me how nice it was, even scary homeless people; back then it would have been worthy of mozzers god-like trotters, but not now. now it would be like washing his feet with a subway rat. he'll never accept! and its all ive ever wanted from life :( (to be clear I do not have a foot fetish, quite the opposite. I just enjoy the biblical symbolism of it)
well i think you should make that film then! and i know what you're thinking but i can assure you that I never did anything at all with ken. i only had one ken and it was generally accepted that he was a bit of a stick in the mud, so he stayed home while Barbie went out and had a life and nobody missed him.
of course i keep lists! how else would i rememer what i am all about and keep all of the fragmented shards of my personality glued into a neat coherent whole?
if i were to write a travel list it would go like this:
1) amsterdam
2) Manchester (only because my hot sexy lover is from there) and london again
3) romania and bulgaria (but im kind of afraid of getting rabies from the stray dogs)
4) seattle again (which is easy enough that I could go now, but now that my eyelids are f***ed ive lost the will to go until i get them fixed)
5) sarajevo
i dont think cucumber slices is the answer by the way. of course that works for some eyelid issues but it wont work for mine. cucumbers arent magical, you know. :( but thank you for the suggestion! actually my eyelids have not been bothering me so much as of late. I mean, they're still changed, in that the skin is still too lax, but it's not such a huge deal lately, as in, I can get passed it. but since my eyelids seem to change on a daily basis, one day being puffier, the next more hollow, that's not something I can feel any certainty about. I might wake up tomorrow and not be able to get passed it. and it's the uncertainty that I hate most.
oh dear, i think perhaps you didnt like the halva because you didnt even use any exclamation points, and good halva is really worthy of exclamation points. I hope you don't think I give bad suggestions! maybe yours was stale, otherwise it shouldnt be that dry. whenever I get it it's always a lil bit oily, unless its old in which case it's very dry, and not very good. dried figs are great too! i prefer dates to figs though.
well in sure your mysterious "piece of something" will be fantastic, whatever it is! also i rented polly maggoo! i haven't watched it yet though! probably tomorrow! you must watch it too! I don't mean tomorrow, of course--whenever you get the time. no rush!

Oh don't you worry. I will sing a requiem for you if I've found you've passed and it's guaranteed to bring you back from the grave. You'll rise back up and exclaim "stop with that f***in' awful singing already!".
Oh my, has your hair gone from mousey to subway ratty? When did this happen? Still, I bet it looks good in all black, which is the most important thing. I'm really beginning to wonder if Morrissey is declining your offer because his trotters are ticklish. It's the only rational explanation. He's self conscious that the tickling will cause him to let out an unflattering yelp and what would you think of him then.
Oh, Amsterdam might be fun. I'm not as interested in the cafe culture as I once was. You see, now I got a natural high. I would be much more interested in the tulip culture. I'm pretty sure that Amsterdam's where the tulip museum is located. Did you know that if you crossbred your own strain of tulip, you get to name it. Wouldn't it be wonderful to say you named your own strain of tulip? (I think strain is the right word). Well it's settled. As a hobo, I will go around planting my own strain tulip. It will be my gift to the world. I'll even be able to fertilize the tulips with the project I'm working on. Believe me, they'll grow nice and healthy. Haha.
Oh, I did enjoy the halva. An exclamation point wouldn't to it justice. How about this... $. That's right, it was right on the money. They didn't have fresh halva though, so I bought it off the shelf and maybe hence the dryness. It's not like I'm not going to eat it all though.
Oh, I've already watched Polly again, so I'm looking forward to discussing it. How nice it is to be able to discuss films I've watched. I do cringe at myself sometimes, when my relation to something is from a film I saw. I wonder what it says about me, having a worldview shaped by the films I've watched. It's like that film... well I'm doing it again. See what I mean.
Oh. maybe I shouldn't be so hard on Jehny's bowl hairstyle. It dawned on me that maybe she was trying to look like Iris Murdoch. That would be pretty cool then. So I'm going tomorrow night to see the Savages. When Jehny jumps out into the audience, I'm going to slip your note between her toes.

You two could have taken your discussion to private messages about 10 pages back, instead of hijacking someone else's thread and driving it into complete redundancy, you know?

no it's too late. you did not sing a requiem and now my soul will never find its way to heaven :(
well my hair has only recently gone to subway ratty in the advent of my not having washed it for a while, this problem will soon be remedied whereupon it will go back to it's more approachable rodent state.
oh I'm not interested in café culture either (as previously indicated) so that is not what I would be seeing about in Amsterdam, but rather all the museums(!). I really love the dutch old masters. I did like Vermeer but seeing the documentary "tims Vermeer" really ruined him for me. i bet there are lots of fantastic shops in amsterdam as well. the dutch strike me as a weird and wonderful people. I did not know that you could crossbreed your own strain of tulip! what old lady did you glean that piece of information from? lol and what would you name yours? daffodil?! mine would be gelsomina-pavlova! or Lucien Maximillian Charles augustus III if it happened to be a boy.
you;ve already watched it?! oh arent you sneaky. well i best get on it myself then. yes, it is fun to watch films and then be able to discuss them, it's like being in a film club! i fear i dont have that many insights though. i do with films with what you do with yoga, i just absorb them wihtout thinking about it too much. of course i love to be informed by the in-the-know opinions of people like yourself.
ohhhh now you've done it! friar tuck was one thing, but dont you compare my jehnny to that icky woman! ugh well, are you excited to see savages again?! I'm excited for you! twice in one lifetime, how can one person be so lucky!
next time we talk I will have watched polly maggoo! and perhaps you will have seen the beauteous jehnny and will have much to report! eeeeee I cant wait for her to get my note!!

dont be a jerk. there are enough of those around here already, you know?

I don't mean tomorrow, of course--whenever you get the time. no rush!
If I had to go back to Bulgaria it would have to be under one condition: a 5 star hotel. The hotel I stayed in was horrible. No air conditioning, they didn't change the sheets nor vacuum my room for 5 days. No soap or shampoo in the bathroom. The breakfast menu was the same every day and rather off-putting. The sidewalks were in a desolate condition - broken with 1 foot wide and deep holes in them. The Black sea was (and I imagine still remains) dirty. I bought myself there a pair of white shoes which I later in my room discovered were not white. Well, only one of them was. The other one was cream. How ridiculous is it to buy a pair of shoes that don't match?! The next day when I went to return them back to the store, the store was no longer there. I also bought a perfume called Rose of Bulgaria which actually smells heavenly (if you like roses), but, unfortunately, came in a leaky bottle. The people there are very nice and I befriended a young woman who used to sell crepes from a street shop. I would stop by her shop each time I went to town and buy a different flavour. I imagine Romania is not any better than Bulgaria. It was considered (along with Albania) one of the worst countries from the former Eastern block. But you know, this is ONLY MY opinion. Take it or leave it.

well I'm not going anywhere soon anyway *sob*, but those things don't really bother me. I wouldn't be going to Romania or Bulgaria for the luxury (although five star hotels in Romania, well Bucharest anyway--im not sure if they have any five star hotels in any of the smaller towns i would be travelling to--are extremely inexpensive so it would be possible at least for a few nights to stay in one), but rather for the adventure and the experience, broken sidewalks and all. i really love the style of architecture in Transylvania and it's not something you can really experience anywhere else so I imagine it's worth it to have to put up with some backwardness. I really couldn't give a f*** if my sheets weren't changed and my room not vacuumed for 5 days, in fact, i'd probably prefer it, and I never use hotel shampoo anyway. your story of the crepe seller is charming, and in my opinion should make up for all the other annoyances. the only thing that really would concern me about going there other than the stray dogs (im afraid of dogs as it is) is the transportation--the trains seem very inconvenient, some getting into town in the middle of the night: a strange town, with stray dogs and possibly few english speakers in the middle of the night, with no clue how im supposed to get where I need to go? no thank you. anyway, thanks for sharing!

also I'm not much of a complainer with one exception: European hotels (at least the cheaper ones) are always so cold. why is that? it's like they've never heard of heat. rarely do you get to control your own. the last time I went anywhere in the winter, when I came home I was so traumatized from the cold that I fell asleep in front of my portable heater and woke up with heat burns all over my arms, which looked exactly like I had ringworm. still it was heavenly.
