'Trick or treat' is understood to have derived from 'Mischief Day', an Elizabethan festival of organised japes that was held on the evening of the 4th November.
This festival has presumably traveled across the Atlantic and become fused with Halloween, which has then returned back to Britain in this combined form.
We are now lucky enough to have society sanctioned demands of money with menaces from the jolly youth of merry England!
