A Sunday morning theory about Morrissey and the weather

Ok I'm not a psychiatrist..... but I guess it's a well-known fact that there's a connection between the weather and the creative output of people who are moody and sensitive.

If you are affected by the weather, what you're gonna do when it's grey and rainy? You're gonna sit inside and think, and if you have any creative urge, whether it'd be music, painting, writing, etc., you're gonna want to get in out.

Whilst Morrissey was living in Manchester or London, he had plenty of time to sit inside and think about his past, upbringing, the meanness of the world etc..... Thus he always had something to write about. Along with that might have come a desire to get away and tour as often as possible. Could be. Touring brought new experiences, new soil for creativity, etc.......

So now he lives in L.A. and the sun's beaming down on him all day. I'm not still claiming all he does is drive down the boulevards in his Porsche, but the new sunnier life certainly had an effect on his creative output....Since 98 he's done one tour and apparantely one album which only exists in theory.

Now judging on myself, I can certainly relate to that..... I usually write my best stuff in autumn and winter, when I'm traditionally most depressed aswell. That doesn't mean that I only write depressing stuff, but that I take out more time to "connect" to my inside. These days when it's hot, all worries, thoughts, catastrophes make me go "yeah, whatever". Life's just smoother and lived more for the moment......... Yesterday while it was boiling hot all day I hardly ever got off the sofa and my most upfront concern was in which order to empty the fridge.

Here I go again......though I've changed my conclusion slightly from saying that L.A.'s not good for Morrissey to: L.A. is probably good for Morrissey and thus unfortunately not good for us. I hope that at least he manages to put out a worthy swan song before he retires in the sunshine for good.

Unfortunately Morrissey really lost the plot when he became utterly self obsessed. His writing was always personal from the get go but from Viva Hate onwards his songs have either been about him or his weird views of what it means to be English.

To me it's very sad, a great songwriter who lost his way with only the occasional flashes of brilliance.

Morrissey was once quite angry at how people were treated, people on the margins of society. For the longest time he's angry at how he's being treated, a rich pop star in retirement in Los Angeles.

You can only play 'Hand In Glove' and weep.

Still love the old tosser though.

I have already attributed the change in his creativity, output and tours to his age.

When I was younger I had a ton of creativity and could write songs and poems all day long with all the passion in the world.

Now that I am older, Im over it. My half-assed attempts att poetry are just words that have allready been written by someone else and boring. I also look more for the commercial value and profit possibility from them. Then I go out instead of thinking and writing.

Now that Moz is older, what time does he really have to write anything more than what he knows? He is no longer a man of the people.
He is just...something else than what he was then.

tHIS IS RIDICULOUS, some of the most brilliant artists created their best works when they were older.

Yeah, but thats not usually the case for pop artists. Pop stars usually do their best work early on.

This is definetely not the case for the likes such as Tori Amos. She has gotten better later and not earlier with her "Why Kan't Tori read or something like that."

I really think that is brilliant, Meems!

That is very true, I would think...I think that is a very unselfish view of his thoughts on bright ol' LA. I would say that is the clearest view on what has happened to him since he moved here...Hmmm, interesting!

I did say 'usually'.

Re: A Sunday AM theory about Morrissey and the weather

I have always said LA, and a life in the sun, has done for Morrissey's creative talents.. When he was in Manchester/London.. he was an unloveable outsider (remember that film the Outsiders by the way.. great movie).. who thought life was insecure, uncertain, bleak, dark, and lonely.. every day was a depressing twilight.. and that he felt he would be forever alone..

.. How that stark view changes with age and experience.. And how 'love' (whatever that is!!) and security changes everything.. I feel more optimism now than I ever have done, and that's with two marriages and a host of unsatisfying relationships behind me.. But now I am more selective and pick and choose who I socialise with.. Not so desperate any more.. when you're younger that doesn't always happen.. Maybe Morrisseys view has changed for a more positive outlook as well... But in doing this, you loose that 'vital' anger, and energy..

..still, if Morrissey has found contentment and happiness, then he should be able to take some inspiration from that.. ?

What does the old millionaire man on the hill have to complain about? He has gotten ghis revenge on the kids in school, he can have any boy or...for the people who belive in santa clause still...any girl..Everyone lovs him, the world caters to him...what does he have that is critical enough that normal people can relate to?

It's about art. Even if he writes about the weather, or about stalkers (again??), I still NEED and WANT a new album. Do you think that a man with a rich inner universe would stop, because he can't write things like "bigmouth strikes again" anymore?

Im still trying to figure out the true DEPTH in the friggin window washer that I am suppossed to identify with!

instead of looking to your own navel, you could start to put your nose out of your room more often. Art is not just about your own life. There's so much out there to see. "the place where you live is not the centre of the universe"

He's just 42. i don't consider him as an old man. have you thought what things must be passing through his mind now? I mean, everything he learned the past years, the new fans in United States, the effect of this culture on him, etc...

Ok, enough. I just know I like his music, and would love to see him back.
