Is it just me or are were the House Martins a bit of a Smiths rip off?

It seems strange to me that Norman Cooke would go on from the House Martins to doing things like Beats International, Freak Power, Pizza Man & Fatboy Slim.

P.S. I've been around for a while but I haven't posted until now because whenever I come here my browser freezes for 5 minutes at a time, can that be fixed?

I always found the Housemartins to be much more "peppy" than the Smiths.

Perhaps. Then again, could you have anticipated Johnny Marr forming Electronic with an ex-member of New Order? Maybe that was his true calling (I mean, he only played the bass, rigth? Did he have much to do with the actual song-writing in the Housemartins?).

True I guess, after all, Norman Cooke was just the drummer.

Um......The Housemartins were actually around the same time as The Smiths, and I really think they sound nothing like them. I like them better than The Beautiful South anyways.

Re: The Housemartins

I don't think the Housemartins were at all like the smiths. They had a different MO altogether...Sure they have that 80's kitchen sink kinda feel about them...they are a reasonably good band...and stuck out doing their own kind of hum-hum-ha-ha-har-ha-harmaniseing thing.

As for Mr Cook...maybe he just wanted to be famous and so got in on anything he could?! Zoe Ball?! Sheesh!

Re: The Housemartins

You & Sharron are acting like I was ragging on them but I wasn't.

I cannot speak for sharron...but I assure you I accuse you of ragging not. I was merely musing outloud about how you could have come to the conclusion you did...that they were 80's and reasonably good...and as the smiths were and are and always will be better, you were led to the idea that maybe the smiths were insperation to those harmonising little dickie birds!! I was merely offering a relevent alternative suggestion swinkle, so just go unknot thos knickers right this second : )

No, no. When I was making the "bass player" reference, I was clearly talking about Cooke.

Re: Highly strung, pontiff?

They're now unknotted, I'm sure there was a House Martins song(can't remember the name) that was sounding like Cemetary Gates.

I always liked the Smiths better, I'd never actually own any House Martins cds but they'd be quite pleasant to listen to if ever they came on the radio.

PLEASE!!!! Stop spelling The Housemartins as two seperate words. I did not think you were ragging on them totally, but the name spelled seperately really bugs me for some reason.
