It's a very small world in the middle of a crowd...

Saw Bad Manners last night down my local gymanasium.. 80's Ska revival?? Ha ha.. all I can say is the venue was cavernous, like the nirvana 'teen spirit' video.. and the queue for the bar depressingly long. The laughs were good though.. you really must hang with the Ruffian Massive (Hooligan gig 8/9).. We can be charming men.. but desperately amusing..

..A voice in the crowd, we'll never surrender..

Re: Lyrics for Staring At The Rude Boys..

It's a very small world in the middle of the crowd
The room gets dark as the music gets loud
The treble cuts through as the rythem takes a bite
But there's no room to move 'cause the floor is packed tight

A voice shouts aloud 'we'll never surrender'
A voice in the crowd 'never surrender'
Another head bowed blind propaganda
Never Surrender, we'll never surrender

The skins in the corner are standing at the bar
While the rude boys are dancing to some heavy heavy ska
It's getting so hot people dripping with sweat
The punks in the corner are speeding like a jet

Staring at the rude boys
Staring at the rude boys
Dancing with the rude boys
Dancing with the rude boys
Staring at the rude boys
Staring at the rude boys

A bunch of BM'S march in on DM'S
And some stand there saluting the air
They wanna be pirates
But the sea is not calm
Tattooed crossbones on their arm

A voice shouts aloud 'we'll never surrender'
A voice in the crowd 'never surrender'
Another head bowed blind propaganda, prOpAgAnDa, PROPAGANDA

The lights come alive in a blinding flash
Dance floor clears as the victims clash
Everyone leaves when the heavies arive
Someone hits the floor, someone takes a dive

Staring at the rude boys
Staring at the rude boys
Dancing with the rude boys
Staring at the rude boooyyyyysssss

'We'll never surrender'
'Never surrender'
'We'll never surrender'
'Never Surrender'
'We'll never surrender'

The Ruts are the best punk band out of the lot, oh and I've done the crossword puzzle on the original 7" of this track if anyone ever needs help with it.

Re: In Praise of Punk and the Ruts and Jilted John..

Thanks Billy.. nostalgia trip there for me mate.. the following lines I always found stirring in my London youth..

> The skins in the corner are standing at the bar

But I was never a style punk.. but had the music.. Initially, I had 'The Scream' (Siouxsie on first vinyl release) Hong Kong garden is still a classic, Sham 69's debut (who could forget Hurry up Harry), Damned Damned Damned (New Rose and they got better.. 'Machine Gun Etiquette' one of may favourite rock albums ever), Stranglers (get A Grip!!), Elvis Costello... and a host of lesser acts like Members, Skids, The Leighton Buzzards (because they sang about Tottenham High Road)..

Hanging out in the Seven Sisters Road is where I found the skins and mohican fraternity, and then the Ruts, Vapours and Angelic Upstarts followed suit.. playing at one of the rough house pubs near White Hart Lane called 'The British Queen'.. I can still smell the adranile in the air..

And who could forget Jilted John..

I'm into pretty much all the decent punk stuff, from The Pistols and The Clash to post-punks like Gang Of Four and Joy Division. Hate all that early 80's hardcare @#!!! like Crass and Discharge. Haven't really got much time for the scene though, it was all right at first, shook things up a bit, but after a while you get a lot of snobbery. There wasn't much unity at the time either, it's unthinkable now that you could get beaten up for liking the wrong band, or style of music. I remeber reading about Johnny Rotten slagging of a couple of memebers of The Clash in an interview, the 2 guys (not sure which of hand) went looking for Johnny all around London, and when they found him they couldn' believe how stupid they had been taking it all so seriously when there is probebly a real enemy out there laughing their arse of at 'em. Obviously you would have been a lot closer to the scene then me up here in Sheffield, we had clubs like The Limit where a lot of punks/post punks played.

We'll have to go over some old punk rock stories some time, but right now I've got some heavy drinking to do the Blades are at Toy Town tonight (Rotherham).

Re: In Praise of Punk and the Ruts and Jilted John..

Can't claim the Pistols or the Clash as bands I was into at that time.. I obviously knew of them, but discovered their talents and energy much later..

Tell you what though Billy.. this is better stuff from the Board.. I am sure Morrissey would approve of the fact that music and the passion that it can engender has broken out in good postings..

I agree about the hardcore bands Crass etc.. Not worth the vinyl they were pressed on really. Just shock value.

Re: Anybody like Television Personalities?

Nigella Lawson!! boom boom oh I know you didn't mean that kind of television personality.

Re: In Praise of Punk and the Ruts and Jilted John..

Billy & Ruffian,
'Tis music to my ears also. I was (well still am) near Manchester & had many happy times during 1978/79. Tuesday nghts at the Buzz Inn, in Bolton & Fri/Saturday nights at The Factory/Russell Club in Moss Side, Manchester. I've put 'many happy times' as unfortunately time & beer (not necessarily in that order) have faded the memories. But one memory I do recall, which is connected to the Jilted John theme, I was down at The Russell Club watching The Damned, po-go-ing & spitting as was the fashion in the midst of what is now known as the mosh pit, when I was half crushed & struggling for breath, then this geezer pulled me out & took me outside to get some air, when he saw I was ok he went back in. I went back in after a short while, but the guy who did the goodly deed was none other than 'Gordon' well I don't think that was his real name, but if you've got "Jilted John" picture cover, that's the bloke at the bus stop with 'Julie', honest.
By the way, X-Rayspex where my favourites at the time, I was in love with Poly Styrene.
Oh to be 15 again!

Jilted John

Dear Grim

Would that have been John or Gordon? Haven't got the pic sleeve myself, but I guess Jilted John (Graham Fellows aka John Shuttleworth) would have put himself on the cover with Julie prior to being jilted.

must catch the 65 to Ealing Broadway

Re: Jilted John

Dear Tingle,
The Cover has Jilted John (aka Graham Fellows/John Shuttleworth) in the foreground eating a bag of chips (french fries to the non U.K.ers)
stood behing him at the bus stop is Gordon & Julie, Gordon has his arm around Julie. It was Gordon not John who saved me, so to speak.
I'll have a go at scanning & sticking it in here or at least a link to it to save all this mithering I've already done, d'oh!

Brilliant!

This is what the internet was invented for!

Thanks

Incidently, my Auntie told me years ago that Jilted John painted her bungalow, not oil on canvass, with Sandtex.

Re: Brilliant!

I heard he'd got an Art O'Level must have put it to good use by painting yer Aunty's bungalow. BTW did you see that tv programme about him entering the Euro-vision song contest? Very funny, I think I've got it on tape unless it's been Corried over.

Liked your reminiscing!! People that were actually there have my maximum respect. Its all well and good being into the music 15 years later.. but its perople like you supporting and following these fledgling bands that really count.

> memory I do recall, which is connected to the Jilted John theme,

I loved the Damned.. Captain Sensible came from Croydon and cleaned the toilets there in the Fairfield Halls I recall.. He tells some fantastic anedotes.. a real character.. But their moshes are dangerous places to dwell!

> & spitting as was the fashion in the midst of what is now

Excellent tale.. Gordon wasn't such a moron after all... I was in love with a girl called Julie at school.. my first crush.. and in typical Smiths style.. she died in a motorcylce smash about 3-4 years after we all left..

> By the way, X-Rayspex where my favourites at the time, I was in

But Grim, Poly had such bad teeth!! Siouxsie Sioux was far more of a babe in a fetish club style of course.. Claire Grogan on the front of that second Altered Images album was gorgeous.. and it had some good songs.. remember 'Don't Talk to Me About Love'..?

I could be happy!

Ruffian,
Poly didn't really have bad teeth, she was well pre-Moz she wore braces uneccesarily to be punk.
Clare Grogan, now there brings back some thoughts (mostly dirty).
I love(d) The Damned I saw 'em 4 times, the use to come to Manchester regularly in the '70's, Captain Sensible & Rat Scabies would be at the bar before they went on stage, just getting pissed, Fun times.
Wish I'd have seen the Pistols but it never happened, mind you I never saw The Smiths live either. Hopefully that will be my life's only 2 regrets. Who knows fingers crossed whilst all 4 of The Smiths are still alive there could be a reunion!
Well enough for now.

Did you know that Poly Styrene of X-Ray Spex fame is now married to a vicar or preist of some sort and has found god in a big way.

ah there's food for thought.

Re: In Praise of Punk and the Ruts and Jilted John..

I remember that when she left the Spex she went into some religious @#!!!e but no I was unaware of her marrying a vicar (maybe in a tutu?)
I loved the punk ethos, why oh why did I have to grow up?
Punk ethos, at 16 I'd have thought that was something you could sniff!
still Punk at heart
