I've just seen a film that I am convinced Morrissey will have loved if he's seen it

and he probably has. Anyone seen "Georgy Girl"? Marvellous 1966 British film starring Lynn Redgrave, as the title character, and Alan Bates. It's about a girl, an ugly duckling, who has to dodge the amorous advances of her father's employer while trying to fix the lives of her two roommates (her pregnant best girl friend and her childish husband respectively). The ending disappointed me, but I really identified with Georgy. This is just a hunch, but I think Morrissey may have gotten the line "I crashed down on the crossbar" from something Alan Bates says in this movie. After all, he is well known for cleverly pilfering lines from old films and such. Plagiarism, shlagirisim. It takes real talent to do it well, as one of my professors once said.
