Has there ever been a good 'soundtrack' record? (No Moz)

No Moz in this:
I'm prompted by the fact that 'O Brother Where art Thou?' was on TV last weekend. I'd never seen it before, and I found it entertaining enough. Anyhow, some years ago I bought the soundtrack to this film. Why, I'm not exactly sure. I may have been ill, or under the influence of some hype or other, but I purchased it using a gift voucher that was burning a hole in my pocket. I think I listened to it once and then not all the way through. It's the only soundtrack I ever bought and I found I couldn't listen to it. Are do you have any soundtrack LPs? Any good? Sometimes I think the 'Bullitt' one would be good to have, but then there's probably only one track on it worth having......

I always liked, for 60's rock n'roll retro, The Soundtrack to the film 'The Wanderers'.. A lighthearted 'Rumblefish' if you like.

'Trainspotting' is always a safe bet as well. Tarantino soundtracks are pretty satisfying as well. Or, if you like big score original musical soundtracks, try 'oliver' or West Side Story..(two of my faves!) or more classical, then we'll be looking at 'Good Bad the Ugly' or 'the Mission'.

Re: The Hedwig and the Angry Inch Soundtrack

I've never even heard of that film, but will look out for it now. Looks like the sort of thing you don't take your auntie to.

Re: Seems Hazel O'Connor is the Queen of soundtracks

'cos she's on this one too. I recently heard her on the radio and she said how 'the Biz' finds her a bit difficult because it has to categorise her as a singer or a writer or an actress - but she likes being all of them. D'you know I think I have a partial recording of the Breaking Glass LP which I borrowed from my local library in 1983 or some such year. I'm sure Nick Lowe's Breaking Glass was on it too, but the CD over at Amazon seems to show that the Breaking Glass CD is all H. O'C.

good in their own umm, unique way

The Crow
Pretty in Pink
Queen of the Damned
Singles
Purple Rain

Breaking Glass is all Hazel O'Conner, no Nick Lowe on it. Have you seen the film, what do you think of it ?

I have both Trainspotting soundtracks and I love them.

Soundtracks do usually suck though. I used to have a crush on Matt Damon (I was a kid, okay), so someone got me the Good Will Hunting video and soundtrack. I like neither.

I like the "Oh Brother ..." s/t ... I think it hangs pretty well together as an album, although whether you like it or not really depends on your feelings about bluegrass and ol'time music.

I liked the "Velvet Goldmine" s/t better than the film, and again, felt it worked well as an album. No matter what you felt about the film, and the fact that there was no Bowie on it, it was obviously put together by people who really cared about music.

The s/t to "The Last Days Of Disco" works as a really well disco sampler (the only one I'll ever need, anyway) and the s/t to the excellent Australian indie-film "Love Serenade" is a similarly excellent soul/funk/disco compilation which works especially nicely if you've seen the film, because it's put together like a radio show with the main character adding the occasional intro to the songs.

Belle & Sebastian, Luke Haines and Air have all scored excellent instrumental music for films which are worth buying, in my opinion.

The sorts of soundtracks I really hate are the "music from and inpsired by ..." variety, with just a bunch of no-name bands being heavily promoted by their label, along with a "big hit" to sell the album. People who buy these should be shot at dawn.
