First CDs

I was just thinking about early Rough Trade Smiths CDs and wondering if they were released in CD format at the same time as the vinyl and cassette formats? The very first CD I ever bought was "Rank" in Sept 1988. All the previous albums I'd bought on cassette. Can someone put this in perspective for me? e.g was there a CD version of 'The Smiths' LP in 1984 or was it released at a later date on CD.
