Re: Gordon's folly

I bet you're a student, aren't you? It's very easy to be a "Socialist" when you're being paid by us hard-working people to sit around, reading the Guardian and talking rubbish. What do you know about the real world, when you're playing politics with a load of people from the Home Counties who wear glasses?

Get a job you scrounger.

Bloody hell. I'm management and all our council paid us, is a .6% increase. If I'm successful with my appraisal I'll get added 1.4% increase, coming to a grand total of 2%. Which probably means instead of drinking halves, I'll now be able to manage a pint. Miserable council.

It's not just the Public sector; my generous American employers are giving me about the same "rise". I can't afford to go to the pub these days; it's a bottle of supermarket lager on the settee of an evening now.

No, all I have to look forward to at the moment is to get up in the morning to slave all day for minimum wage.

Sorry for thinking there's a better life to aim for than this one

I thought it'd be Tetleys around your way?

Tetleys

Tetleys? Bloody luxury! We can only afford that at Christmas these days. It's a bit too "Yorkshire" for me, actually. I'm more of a Jennings man. Mmm, nice pint of "Pat". Slurp!

Re: Tetleys

Tetley's seem to be making a bit of a push into the NZ market, which is good for me. However, a four pack of cans costs around $10 (3 pounds). That's getting to the top end of the scale for take home beers around here. I tried a can of Kestrel lager 9% a couple of weekends ago, phew I must be getting old as it nearly blew my head off. Current fave tipple is Kilkenny's draught. There's a pub which has it on tap. Again pricey. There is quite a difference between English ale and NZ. The English do have that nice creamy texture to them, and publicans know how to pour a pint keeping the head. Overhere if you get a pint with a one inch head, you take it back as we think we've been cheated of a full pint. Mind you we serve our beer cold!

I was quite sadden to see when I was in England, the over abundance of larger everywhere. The same brews as I can get overhere. Maybe I should belong to a "real ale" message board...

theakstons old perculiar

now there's an ale that tastes gorgeous but leaves me with a bloody bad headache next day, still mustn't grumble as I keep doing it to myself.
The best form of self abuse (well almost).
The ever over indulging

Re: theakstons old perculiar

Oh yes please! It's gorgeous stuff! But evil... I'm also partial to the odd pint of Pendle Witches (another strong one). Jennings Cumberland Ale is nice, and a pub I go to with LMC has Bombardier, which is alright.

Hooray for creamy proper beer!

Re: theakstons old perculiar

Ah yes, I did the Theakstons after the All Black, Scotland test in Edinbrough. So what about Manchester's finest Grim, Boddingtons? There's a pub in Auckland, Galbraiths, which used to be the old Grafton library, which sells it on tap. A library made into a pub, my spritual home.

Sorry to disappoint LoF but boddies is... (how can I put it) if my throat was on fire I wouldn't use boddies to put it out. A better local brew is Joey Holts & much cheaper, Hydes Anvil ales are pretty ok to, usally I only drink that at the match though.

So c'mon what's N.Z.'s fav tipple?

Robinson's

Robinson's bitter is another very pleasant one. It's a NW brewery, I think, so you only tend to see it around here. There's a couple of tied pubs nearby that have it. Very nice! Slurp.

I'm off to the Black Bull tonight, so when I get a pint of Jennings bitter in my hand I'll silently toast the good health of Vauxhall Driver, LoF and Grim. Cheers!

Re: Robinson's

Robinson's bitter, see a lot of it round the Stockport area, if my alcohol sodden memory serves me well?
Cheers TMF.
Grim O'Grady
p.s. anyone tried Asda's Whitechapel Porter (only £1.24 a bottle) very nice supermarket tipple imho.

Re: Robinson's

Grim, what about Newcastle Brown Ale? Or is that a dirty word around here. You can get that overhere at the supermarket. It's found it's way into the supermarket trolley once or twice. Vegetables be dammed.

Newky the stuff Viz is made on

LoF, nah Newky is good stuff too, can leave you with a headache problem but I'm concerned your missing your greens in favour of the stuff!
