PETA’s shareholder proposal calling for an end to Iams’ tests on laboratory-confined animals was heard at the Procter & Gamble (P&G) annual meeting on October 12 in Cincinnati, Ohio. PETA representatives addressing executives and shareholders inside the meeting had a chorus of support outside, as a pack of dogs held a “snarl-in” to voice their vocal opposition to Iams’ cruel experiments. Dozens of PETA members from all over the Midwest came to Cincinnati, home of P&G, to support PETA’s resolution, which the P&G board advised shareholders to reject. The proposal called on Iams to use only humane, in-home tests with dogs and cats who have been volunteered by their guardians.
The proposal would also have required Iams to place all animals who have been used in its cruel laboratory tests in caring homes, as well as to include an assessment of its success in achieving the goals and objectives outlined in the proposal in its annual report.
PETA staff members presented the resolution and local P&G shareholders spoke out in favor of the proposal.
PETA became a shareholder after a former P&G employee who was opposed to animal testing willed PETA $110,000 in P&G stock.
Both P&G and Iams have long histories of harming and killing animals in tests, and Iams’ pet-food experiments are useless and indefensible. A PETA undercover investigation revealed abuses to animals inside an Iams contract laboratory, causing P&G and Iams embarrassment and a significant loss of customers.
