I'm Playing Easy To Get

I've been thinking about the lyrics of this song, and I wonder if it's a plea for openness...

"Don't search for a metaphor....."

I wonder if "I'm Playing Easy To Get" means "I'm being obvious with my lyrical intentions" in the sense of "I'm being easy to get...the true meaning"

In the same way that The Public Image says "What you see is just what you get"

Just my musings.

Yes, I think he's fed up of people looking for hidden meanings and metaphors in his songs and is telling us all to lighten up.

> Oh most definitely, I thought that on first time of hearing.

Don't dig for a metaphor
Has it not twigged with you yet?

blah blah

And don't wonder, why I'm still around
I'm just playing easy to get

And don't wonder, why I'M STANDING OVER HERE (over where?)

Why I'm standing over here
As in.....the stage? or deeper than that?
I would like to think the stage, but that's cos I am a sad dilusional fool!

lets hope he started playing this song so late in the tour to diffuse all of the speculation that came about over his "cryptic" remarks. kind of as to say, "ha ha joke's on you my dear psychotic fans!"

i.e. statements like "This is farewell" turning into "oh no moz must have had some sort of dream last night in which he got hit by a car leading him to interpret it as a premonition warning him he might not be around much longer so hes saying goodbye to all his fans!"

not that i didn't have my own share of hyperbolic "metaphor digging."

not a literal "standing over here" if what he's saying is right. sort of like when you are arguing with someone and you say, "i'm over here telling you that i didn't do that last night!"

and you know, uncleskinny has a good point that never would have "twigged" (if that's a word) with me otherwise.

sorry moz, you are still way too deep for me!

"twigged" is most definitely a word, as in just caught on (to the meaning of something)

Actually, Skinny, I read that line in The Public Image as just the opposite of being open. To me, the "just" and "you" strongly alter the usual cliche "what you see is what you get." The cliche indicates no further depth to the person in question other than what they provide on the surface.

But here, Morrissey seems to be saying what we see is only a small portion of what is there and, further, he isn't sharing more with us ("what you see is just what YOU get").

I could be reading far too deep into it. Lyrically, I think it's one of the most satisfying of his most recent songs.

Cheers,

Jamie
