sorry...

I'm surprised by all of the mentions of the Trash Can Sinatras

First, I didn't even think those guys were still doing anything. It's kind of like stumbling across something by the Boo Radleys in the used CD store and remembering they exist.

Second, I had picked up their "to sir, with love" single (which I got not because I had heard the song before, but that someone who emailed me during that time was a big fan of theirs), and the only song I liked was the first song, which was of course, a cover of someone else's song.

...and Travis, I already own....
as with the Ramones, Velvet Underground, etc. but that's OK. If you named them, then you have good taste.

I know you have all The Smith stuff, but, anyway... did you try that beautiful instrumental "There is a light..."??? A heavy file, I know, but if you don't have that, just try to download.

Well, they are a good band. With reminicence of the Smiths.
And, we are all Smiths fans. = )

> First, I didn't even think those guys were still doing anything.

They're currently finishing up a new album.

Who?

Ah, I would suggest listening to one of their albums (one their three) before you make final judgement. As reccommended by many, get "Cake."

>and the only song I liked was the first song, which was
> of course, a cover of someone else's song.

Well, their music is slightly different between the first two albums. I have just now heard that song for the first time myself. I would definantly reccommend listening to an actual album. IT's like only listening to the Morrissey's "My Love Life" single cd, and deciding that you don't like Morrissey's work.

> ...and Travis, I already own....

Well, um, there are plenty of other bands in good taste. The Ramones, I DID NOT name, the velvet underground I also did not name, I suggested that you look into Lou Reed's solo work. Travis I also did not name, you'll have to go back and read your suggestion posts to find out who named them.

You must realize that was suggested in responce to your post is just that, suggestions. It's up to you if you actually want to follow through into looking up the bands/albums.

Someone mentioned Trash Can Sinatras. That's a great place to start. Also The Stone Roses are another great Manchester Band. Travis is good but someone probably said that. I love sixties Country Western music and feel obligated to suggest Jim Reeves. He did a great Moon River too. James is very good. What's the World is a James cover. The Space Monkeys are a cool Manchester band. Catherine Wheel is good. The Sundays are a girl Smiths. Lush if your in the mood for shoegazer stuff. Face to Face for Smiths influenced punk rock instead of NoMX-182.

I respect that.

However, most Smiths knock-offs irritate me and that is why I asked that people leave Suede and Gene off the list.

Is it because they can't live up to some imaginary level of greatness? No. It's simply because I can't get into it. I've tried listening, but in every case I end up losing interest and sticking the CD somewhere never to be found again.

"But what about Travis?" you say. Travis is different. I think they sound like mellow 70's rock, and NOT the Smiths. Just because some band attempts to write "oh woe is me" lyrics does not mean they have ripped off from Morrissey.

Belle and Sebastian are really good.

My point.

But you see, I would rather not...

That's not right because the first song of Morrissey's I had ever heard, the More you Ignore me..., hooked me.

And I do happen to somewhat like "My love life"

Which I have done that!

In general, it seemed like those names were popping up on more than one list...

Yes, I do realize that, and I did. I had been waffling for a while for many many reasons, but I finally picked up a Pixies album...that with a Johnny Cash CD.

What I really hoped to do was to get the people who still actually pick up new and different music to say something. And by "new" I mean by artists, either recent or old, who they have not previously listened to and have the ears to say whether or not they like it because it is actually good and not because it's a Smiths knock-off.

That's Entertainment

You missed my point. So, I'll state it one more time. The point is:

You can't correctly judge a band off of one single. It's eliminating out alot of what the band has done, which isn't exactly going to give you a true impression of their music (the general term implies the whole of their music).

> And I do happen to somewhat like "My love life"

As do I, and most of the people on this board.

I'm lazy, shoot me....

Yes, I understood your point perfectly the first time, and I will say in my defense, that over the past few years, my list of all-time favorites came from hearing just one song one time.

Belle and Sebastian
Morrissey
Eno/Cale (better than average by themselves, brilliant together)

just to name a few!

It's a magical moment of minding your own business and that ONE SONG shoots out and strikes a nerve and you can't rest until you've picked up that album and played it to death.

And it doesn't stop there because those moments are even better than giving some band another chance. Would Travis fall into that category? After all, I had their first album and thought it was OK, and refused to buy their follow up until I heard a cut off of it on the radio. I mean, I do like it and all, but there are songs on there I really don't care to listen to that much. It's a 3/4-great album, and they currently rank as a band that if they did come to town, I would go out of my way to see them. But, when their next album comes out, I know I won't be first in line to get it. It's not like I came to care about them that much.

But with those other artists I listed, those one songs were the beginning of something brilliant and long lasting. I've definitely gone way the heck out of my way to see Morrissey, and I went through a lot of trouble just to see Belle and Sebastian when they were playing in Boston. And here it is, years on, both of them doing their usual and I wait impatiently to see what happens next.

> As do I, and most of the people on this board.

no, you misunderstood my point. i can identify Morrissey songs I do and don't like, and that is one I can honestly claim that I do like. However, the quality that intrigues me runs through both.

yes! pulp pulp pulp! finally someone! here`s someone with more ego than moz...jarvis cocker

the best sing-along album i've heard in the last 3 years would be Ivy's Apartment Life.

Their motto is Pop without the bitter aftertaste.

Oh yea, the new His Name is Alive is coming out soon!

Hey, if you like Ivy, then you should check out PACO, Dominique's side project. It's experimental "rock" music, but it's Dominique's vocals, so it's something to look for.
