Whoever you are, I urge you to buy the new, & final, single from GENE, released on Dec 6th & entitled "Let Me Move On".

You DO need this song, & if after hearing it you're not reduced to a quivering mass of jelly, or, at the very least, floods of tears, then I'm afraid that you have no heart.

As you no doubt are aware, Gene will be no more after the handful of UK dates they have scheduled before christmas, & the final single that I am presently insisting you buy.

In these troubled times, where romance is dead & people no longer buy singles, it only requires that approx. 5,000 people buy a single for it to appear on the Pop Charts, thus ensuring, at least, a smattering of plays on Radio 2.

Remember, Gene split largely because their last two albums were so cruelly ignored by, amongst others, YOU!!

This being the case, you owe it to them & to yourself to buy this single.

One more thing. SHAME ON YOU ALL!!

sorry, babe, but if they aren't my style then they just aren't my style.

i don't keep up with them, but the bits i heard made them sound like a bunch of flakes which is never particularly healthy when trying to keep your career afloat.

How little you know about the music business!!

Pop History is positively festooned with so-called "flakes", in fact, the "flakier" the better, or so it appears.

Morrissey himself being a prime example, & God Bless him for it!

At the risk of affecting sales, I feel compelled to post this link to an mp3 of the forthcoming Gene single, available on two CD's & 7" vinyl.

Prepare to have your heart split in two!

Gene were flakes in a bad way. Their career never recovered from when they were dropped from that label a few years ago after Rossiter went looney tunes, and i just assumed they were back to bussing tables again. I seriously did not know they were still around until Moz booked them for Meltdown.

I'm sorry you feel that way

It amazes me how most Morrissey fans seem to have little or no affection for Gene, but were one to leaf through their CD collections, the amount of sheer unadulterated over-hyped tripe one would find would make one positively weep at the criminal injustice of it.

suzanne, your scornful dismissal of a band that made at least 2 fantastic albums,2 more than most bands I might add, who shared the same aesthetic sensibility, in terms of songwriting & all round presentation, as Morrissey, & who had a dashingly handsome, witty, erudite & charming front man in Martin Rossiter, well, it does you no credit.

I suspect people who don't share our appreciation of Morrissey & his work are equally dismissive of him.

Sad to say unless you were a fan of Gene there was little chance you'd realised they were actually still going, which is down to a lack of real backing and finances, thus stopping the last few albums selling well, its not all down to people ignoring them (same goes for the criminally ignored Trashcan Sinatras)
I did actually buy Gene's last two albums and live DVD's, i'm sure quite a few people who come here did also. It's very sad considering bands like The Ordinary Boys are celebrated for what Gene were originally ridiculed for, as in sounding like their very English influences. The again Gene are far superior, live especially...one of the best i've seen.
So indeed, please go buy the single as it is really very lovely.

i'll miss em'.

cheers
Kes

Bit blinkered there, Sue. I own pretty much everything that Gene have done, and I don't share your view. They were, at their best, a really excellent band, and I rate Where Are They Now? and Olympian as two of the best tracks of the 90s. However, they were monstrously inconsistent, and for me they never quite assembled an album that didn't have at least 50% forgettable filler.

That said, I've seen them three times this year alone, and have to say that they perhaps never quite got the credit that they should've done, particularly as a live force. While I won't be putting a noose round my neck at their splitting, I certainly wish them well, and will definitely be picking up both the single and the DVD.

gene rule and should never split up

i got into gene in the mid 90's when i was still young fresh and in my 20's so they'll always remind me of a very exciting time of my life their songs have the same effect on me as any moz or smiths tune ,i have met the guys a coulple of times and found them to be the nicest most down to earth people you could ever meet ,so this is sad news for me goodbye gene .
