Average score of 7.55 for the 12 album songs. Looking at the other thread, that put it 5th in Morrissey's solo career, after Vauxhall and I, Your Arsenal, Viva Hate and You Are the Quarry. Not bad.
Great to see two new songs in the top 100, and I think they're the right two. Shame Smiler with Knife is so low - for me it's up there with his very best - but I can understand why it's a bit marmite.
And The Kid's a Looker is now his worst song ever. To be fair, I think that's probably right...
I love this. It has so much energy, and there's a raw urgency to Moz's vocals - and such a great falsetto! The last minute or so is incredible. Most exciting song he's put out for years.
Not even close - my fourth favourite after Vauxhall and I, Your Arsenal and Viva Hate, and certainly a better album than Quarry. Lyrically, Smiler With Knife, Mountjoy and Oboe Concerto are his best work for many years - love those songs.
WPINOYB for me. Quarry has four good singles and Camden, but three or four very weak tracks. World Peace is a more interesting and consistent work, if less accessible.
Several tracks on this album are "growers", but this more than any other. Possibly the best lyric on the album, and the most interesting piece of music. A strange, threatening 10.
This one has really grown on me. I know it's Moz-by-numbers and rationally I should give it a 6, but for whatever reason I like it more than that. So 7.
Moonlight jumping through the trees
sunken eyes avoiding me
I really, really like this. Great lyrics, music, vocal - the whole package. If it had been given a "proper" single release, it would have been his best since First of the Gang to Die. A real highlight of the album. 9.
I do think it's a great album, despite my problems with this track - definitely my favourite album since Vauxhall. It's really only this one and Kick The Bride Down The Aisle that I think are subpar.
Musically it's nice, and Morrissey's voice sounds great, but the lyrics ... It seems to have been written for Russell Brand to use as intro music for his next live show. I strongly dislike the "do not vote" sentiment. So I can't give it more than a 6, I'm afraid.
Lost, I Can Have Both and The Edges Are No Longer Parallel are all wonderful, while I think Papa Jack is one of the worst thing's he's ever recorded. The 2009 version is a bit too long, though, and could really do without Sorrow Will Come in the End. Overall I think it's an improvement, though.
Viva Hate: Bengali in Platforms
Kill Uncle: Found Found Found
Your Arsenal: We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful
Vauxhall and I: Billy Budd (and it's not a bad song by any means!)
Southpaw Grammar: Do Your Best And Don't Worry
Maladjusted: Sorrow Will Come In The End
You Are The Quarry...
