Dear People of SMITHDOM:

These Young Turks are rigging the voting such that Spencer is winning.

He cannot win this poll. Vote for Joyce.

And computer people who know how to dis-enable cookies or whatever, so you can keep voting, please do so!!

Well obviously its Mike Joyce, but to widen this up a little what other drummers do you lot really rate ?

John Maher of the Buzzcocks was tops, phrenetic and tight. Dave Ruffy of The Ruts and later all manner of artists and genres is widely consdiered as a master of the sticks by those in the know. 'Jet Black' The Stranglers drummer was technically excellent, his jazz rootes stood him in very good stead.

Others ????????????

How sad are we? And how sad have we been?

How sad and pathetic must people be to rig a "fun" website poll? Several people voting hundreds of times for the same person doesn't mean the "winner" is the better drummer.

Jeez.

Of Course it's Joyce

It's Mike Joyce by a country mile whether we like to admit it or not. You can guarantee the poll will say Spencer as no one here has a "scoobie" about drumming.

I have always thought Keith Moon was an amazing drummer.

I think I need a man's touch, Tommy...

Re: Of Course it's Joyce

I suppose Rick Buckler has to be admired for fast drumming, but I'm not an expert. The only drummer I have ever met bored me rigid.

Thanks Bluenose but we don't really want to hear about your sex life on here......

Soz, Tommy.

Does it remind you of how you can never never get a shag?

That is SOOOOOO not true. Gillian Simpson and I had a wee fumble behind the music huts in 1978.
That counts as a shag doesn't it ?

Despite not being a fan of his money-grabbing tactics (a debate I do NOT want to get into), of course I voted for Mike Joyce. I can't believe there are idiots making comments on that poll about Dean, Spencer and other nobodies Morrissey has employed being technically better and more passionate than Joyce. I don't care how good they are technically, I just know that not one of these part timers is fit to kiss Joyce's feet. These are probably the same planks who reckon Boz Boorer and Alain Whyte are superior to Johnny Marr.

Now that's a bit harsh. Spencer cowrote some of Morrissey's very best solo tunes. I think that it's a bit unfair to call him a nobody. What has Mike Joyce done since The Smiths anyway? Nothing. It's not like he's gone on to become the best drummer of his generation. Morrissey and Marr are brilliant and Andy Rourke was a damn good bassist. Mike Joyce's drumming was the weak link, at least comparatively speaking.

Obviously, though, anyone who votes for Dean is on crack. He's a decent drummer and probably a nice guy, but he's only worked with Morrissey on one tour so far. I hardly think that qualifies him for the title of best Morrissey drummer ever.

I don't know who I'd vote for. It would honestly be between Spencer and Mike. I'd probably just go with Mike because I prefer The Smiths to Morrissey's solo work by a tiny margin. But I still think Spencer is fab and hardly a nobody among musicians Morrissey has worked with and in the music world at large, he's hardly more of a nobody than Mike Joyce is today.

I voted for Simon Wolstonecroft. Not that I've ever heard any of the demoes he played on, of course, but as a consolation - he must be the unluckiest man in music - being as he was not just Mike Joyce's precursor, but Reni's also.
