Various Artists: How Soon is Now? (3 stars out of 5)

Here's a fascinating dichotomy: While today's emo kids, and post-hardcore scene bands, profess a deep love of The Smiths, most heavyweight fans of said seminal 1980s Manchester band don't reciprocate the feelings towards this generation's emo acts - who were partly inspired by Morrissey et al. Which makes the provacative How Soon is Now? all the more divisive. How you feel about these cover versions will, to a great extent, be determined by your take on the emo phenomenon (and your feelings about The Smiths, of course). However, it would be churlish not to see a certain beauty in Garrison's version of Panic, Million Dead's Girlfriend in a Coma and lifetime Smiths-devotees Cursive tackling Frankly, Mr Shankly.

can somebody tell me what an Emo is?
