On one occasion, however, Yosser imposes himself on the famous footballer Graeme Souness in the hope that somehow Souness's achievement will rub off on him. Yosser insists that he, Souness, and the television detective Magnum share a facial likeness and hence an identity. Souness responds to Yosser's cue with the message, scribbled along with his autograph, "To Yosser Hughes, better looking by far, best wishes, Graeme Souness," before handing him that symbol of success, a bottle of champagne. As a result, Yosser feels briefly validated and constructs the conditional narrative, "I could have been a footballer ... but I had a paper round"
