Shane? Himself? Wow. I wish I'd been there.

Shane MacGowan & The Popes last night

The man was on top form last night, the drunken rendition with style and class, and there's not much better than getting yourself in the middle of MacGowans following.

They played for a good 1 hour and a half, songs included

If I should fall from grace with god, Boys from the county hell, Dirty Old Town,
The Irish Rover, Sick Bed Of Cuchullain, Paddy Irish Enemy Number 1, Thousands are sailing, The Body of an American, Streams of whiskey, Sally Maclennane, Down All The Days, Poor Paddy, A Pair of brown eyes, Wild cats of Kilkenny, and Rainy night in Soho - ah that one always gets me. And there were some more as well which my head won't let me remember right now.

By the end I had forgotten that we had to wait 45 minutes outside in the cold when the doors were supposed to have opened an hour ago, don't know why - who cares.

Great stuff - there's only one Shane MacGowan.

Me and Our Lass saw the best ever Shane MaGowan lookalike crossing over the zebra crossing at the end of our street last night, how we laughed, you just had to be there!

What a set list. I saw MacGowan at Brixton a year or two ago.. That was a great night as well. Those songs are fantastic.. 'Rum Sodomy and the lash' would be in my top 10 albums of all time. Also, a favourite track of mine is the beautifullay named, 'Misty Morning Albert Bridge' (these lyrics are great and could be about moments we all feel, or have felt)

I awoke alone and lonely
In a faraway place
The sun fell cold upon my face
The cracks in the ceiling spelt hell
Turned to the wall
Pulled the sheets around my head
Tried to sleep, and dream my way
Back to you again

Count the days
Slowly passing by
Step on a plane
And fly away
I’ll see you then
As the dawnbirds sing
On a cold and misty morning
By the albert bridge

.. they indeed wrote some great songs about London for sure, like the Irish Ray Davies.

What about his classic take on 'Dirty Old Town'? Did that get played?

If you read young Radar's post again, Ruff, you might see the answer to your 'Dirty Old Town' question.

Anyway, seems like he did a longer set for O'Grady and O'Reilly than he did for me at Shepherd's Bush Empire on Wednesday.
Next time I see him, I'll have a word with him about that.

There was a delay in his appearance onstage last Wednesday as well, Grim.
At the end of their set, The Mahones were told they could play for ten minutes more.
"I wonder why", their singer/drummer said, to much laughter.

Anyway, they then did a cover of Lizzy's "The Boys Are Back In Town" and three or four others to kill time.
Even after they eventually left the stage, we still waited for ages before McGowan & The Popes appeared.
I was bursting (and I mean BURSTING!!!!) for a pish, but didn't want to go to the bogs in case I missed them coming onstage.

So did you relieve yourself in a plastic glass and throw it on stage? I've been to Glasgow, I know that's what you Weegies get up to!

Well perhaps the combination of St Patricks Day + Shane MacGowan + cupious ammounts of alcohol didn't work out too well for the Wednesday gig.

There was one typical drunken Shane moment were they did Boys from the country hell as the second track, and then when they were about to begin Irish Rover, Shane goes 'and this one is the boys from the county hell', cue numerous cries of you've just done that one. Ha ha.

Re: Shane MacGowan & The Popes last night

That should ready 'Paddy public enemy number 1', jeez these Sunday night gigs must be taking their toll.

A few more to add to the set list include the Angel of death, White city, and Lullaby of London.

No, Bluebles. I just pished down the back of the leg of the geezer in front of me. Just like we used to do at the football, before all those pesky seats were brought in.

happy days
