Best Breakup Song

For me it is a tie between The Smith's "I know it's over" and Depeche Mode's, "It Doesn't Matter." Although I guess at some points "Big Mouth Strikes Again," would have been more fitting.

'SONG FOR THE DUMPED' by Ben Folds Five

Song for the Dumped
Ben Folds Five
______

So you wanted to take a break
Slow it down some, and have some space
Well f*** you too
Give me my money back
Give me my money back, you bitch
I want my money back

And don't forget
And don't forget to give me back my black T-shirt

I wish I hadn't bought you dinner
Right before you dumped me on your front porch
Give me my money back Give me my money back, you bitch
I want my money back

And don't forget
And don't forget to give me back my black T-shirt

So you wanted to take a break
Slow it down some, and have some space
Give me my money back Give me my money back, you bitch
I want my money back
I want my money back
And don't forget…

'Tear In Your Hand' - Tori Amos

All the world just stopped now
So you say you don't wanna stay together anymore
Let me take a deep breath babe
If you need me, me and Neil'll be hangin' out with the dream king
Neil says hi by the way
I don't believe you're leaving
Cause me and Charles Manson like the same ice cream
I think it's that girl
And I think there're pieces of me you've never seen
Maybe she's just pieces of me you've never seen, well

All the world is all I am
I am the black of the blackest ocean
And that tear in your hand
All the world is danglin'...danglin'
Danglin' for me darlin'
You don't know the power that you have
With that tear in your hand, tear in your hand

Maybe I ain't used to maybes
Smashing in a cold room
Cutting my hands up every time I touch you maybe
Maybe it's time to wave goodbye now
Time to wave goodbye now
Caught a ride with the moon
I know I know you well
Well, better than I used to
Haze all clouded up in my mind
In the daze of the why
It could've never been so you say
And I say you know you're full of wish
And your "baby baby baby babies"
I tell you there're pieces of me you've never seen
Maybe she's just pieces of me you've never seen
Well...

I think album wise I would say "The Boatman's Call" by Nick Cave. Most of the songs centre around his split from P.J Harvey and are achingly beautiful.
From a Moz / Smiths perspective then I would say without doubt "Well I Wonder"(an overlooked Smiths classic) and probably "Interlude" or "I'd Love To"
Not that I've been dumped before though Joe...ahem....

never had no one ever (because i feel like i never really had the person to begin with)

well i wonder (for the line "please keep me in mind")

Re: Best Breakup Songs

Well, I usually just pull out my old Dead Kennedys records and accost fragile objects until it's all out of my system. Moz is too bittersweet-painful and emotive for the immediate aftermath. He'll have you howling for days on end.

DEAD END
Once I had a lover,
I knew her for quite a while
she seemed alright to me
but then she was gone
she took all my lovin' and time
taking all that was mine
and leaving me far behind

oh, well things crumble to an end
hell we all die in the end
die in the end (repeat to fade)

for me, that's a good thing. i like feeling sorry for myself in such situations. plus, i like feeling like i'm not alone.

The "solidarity in sorrow" thing can be useful - but I prefer cathartic purging in the immediate aftermath. With Moz, you tend to internalise things, with Jello you can righteously blame the world and be done with it.

Totally agree about 'the boatman's call'. Wonderful stuff. But, like yourself, I've never been dumped either. It must be terrible. Poor souls.

I HAVE THE BEST 3 SONGS

LETTER NEVER SENT

If I knew you didn't miss me,
If I knew you didn't think of me,
If I knew your feelings for me
Were dead and buried,
It would be hard, but not as hard as
This knowing you still care -
It would be easier
Than knowing there's still something there.

I know how you don't need this
But I just can't keep quiet.
You've left me feeling so lost,
Where do I go with it?
I know you have a new life,
I know you're not unhappy,
I know that he's good to you -
But don't you just want things easy?

So go ahead and hate me,
I know I promised I would leave it -
A troublemaker's what you've made me
But can't you see we're worth it?
We just belong together,
I think somewhere inside you know it.
Would you admit it ever?
I just don't think it's complicated.

Life shouldn't be about:
"I'm happy, but..."
I just think you should chase
Specialness
For love.

I guess all I'm really saying
Is how I think you're wrong here,
And some things are worth the chaos
That they come along with.
Don't you want more?
Don't you want to burn?
Burn again?

Sometimes I Still Feel The Bruise

This is just to say "hello"
And to let you know
I think of you from time to time
I know I never really knew you
But somehow I miss you
And wish that you'd stayed in my life

Making contact gets harder
As the silence grows longer
And isn't it only me
Who'd like us to see each other?
How I would hate to be a bother
The way we left it was you'd ring

I'm under no illusion
As to what I meant to you
But you made an impression
And sometimes I still feel the bruise
Sometimes I still feel the bruise

Now and then I stumble on
What I've misplaced but never lost
An ache I first felt long ago
Though you've appeared and disappeared
Throughout these past few years
I'd be surprised if you now showed

Making contact gets harder
As the silence grows longer
And why would you think of me
When you were not the one in love?
When you were not the dreamer?
When you were just the dream?

::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::

Though I Still Want to Fall Into Your Arms

Back to how we began
And I promise it'll never come to not speaking again
You I'll always want to know
And you'll always have me to turn to, to hold you
When nothing's really wrong
When something really is
Whatever, whatever's the matter

Though I still want to fall into your arms
I won't let that come between us, between us
Though I still see you, still see you as home
That won't make me run from us, from us

And if I can't show you how I've grown the way I want to
I can do it by being friends with you
I can do it by being a friend

I won't let the broken heart
Return us to the silence that we knew
I won't let the heart that won't mend
Put us through all of that again

When nothing's really wrong
When something really is
Whatever, whatever's the matter
Though I still want to fall into your arms
I won't let that come between us, between us
Though I still see you, still see you as home
That won't make me run from us, from us

And if I can't show you how I've grown the way I want to
I can do it by being friends with you
I can do it by being a friend

They're a wonderful band! My friend Thom recently introduced me to their music and I love it.

What about Magnetic Fields?

all 3 "69 love songs" albums are a must.

has great titles such as:

I don't want to get over you
I think I need a new heart
No one will ever love you (my personal favorite)
How F*ck*ng romantic
The things we did and didn't do
(Crazy for you) But not that crazy
I'm sorry I love you
Love is like a bottle of Gin

Stephin Merritt is pure genius!!!

"Legs" by PJ Harvey has always been a rather lovely song for |the end|

For the dumper not the dumpee

Most of the songs noted were for the person dumped not the one doing the dumping. I know it's over is a great song when you're the dumper but you don't really want it to end.

That's a tough one, one the one hand, you got LL Cool J and J-Lo's rendition of Mary Welles' "All My," but then you got the amazing "Cry Me River" belted out by the musical boy wonder, Justin Timberlake. I think I'm going to have to go with the latter because when some stupid ass broad dumps you, all you want to tell that skank is to cry herself a river.

Re: What about Magnetic Fields?

I totally agree. So many good songs but I'd say 'Aging Spinsters' or 'With Whom to Dance'

'Moons in June/I've given up on that stuff'

I'd also nominate a song some here hate by our own Moz- 'I don't Mind if you forget me'

Or any Buzzcocks like 'You say you don't love me'

And of course, another master of the genre Marc Almond- pick any song but how about 'Say Hello, Wave Goodbye'

or if all else fails, some Hank Williams Sr

Okay, one more, go to the other side of the spectrum and play some Dio, like Rollins says.

That should be more than enough
