I was the one that originally submitted this rumor. The same friend (again, from deep within the Coachella circle) has updated me stating that he now has received a confirmation from a legitimate source that the offer was made (to headline Sunday for $8mil) AND that the holdup of the Smiths accepting at this point is, of course, our man Morrissey. This is the reason for Goldenvoice's continued holding pattern.

Sounds like it is in his hands now - to forgive and forget, to negotiate a reunion sans certain members, or to decline yet again. No idea if this is a single event offer, a tour, or something else. Shouldn't be long now (Tuesday, I believe) before we all know the truth or fiction of this...

  • This is a rant. la la la la you really are a fucking tool.

Fucking shit footballers get transferred for 8 million quid, do you really think the best Britsh band of the last 30 years/ all time will ruin their legacy. BY reforming? At Coachella? Yeh right you are.

I'm sure Mike (is that you Joyce?) is really looking forward to the inevitable low fat spread advert.

  • Well, I think it would be silly not to accept because of some ungrounded principles. It's eight million for singing the same Smits songs he does anyway, just with an other guitarist. He could just give the money to PETA or something, that would turn the whole event into something noble.
I can't, though, understand why anyone would pay that much for those two to play together. Or well, I do, "The Smiths" would sell a lot of tickets, but otherwise..

I don't really care anymore. I was a Smiths disciple for 20 years, they are still my favourite band, but I'm just getting to the point now where I feel that as a band they were historic and a reunion is becoming more and more irrelevant as each year passes. The recent surfacing of those demos was only interesting to listen to at first, but I haven't listened to any of them since. Rewind to ten years ago and I would have played them over and over, as I did all my bootleg collection. It's too late to be significant now. 20 years ago, had Lennon still been alive, it would have been Earth-shattering to see a Beatles reunion, truly phenomenal. If it happened in 2011 had Lennon and Harrison still been alive RIP, it would make headlines for a couple of days and then just come and go as the X-Factor and toddler pop rages full-on in the modern ears. It's too late.

  • I know I'm going to catch hell for this but if The Smiths ever want to get into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame then they need to do a reunion tour first. Or at least a few shows with a live DVD issue. Something- anything. The Smiths are just not in the minds of those who vote on the Hall because they just are not around.
This would be a good time for Morrissey to do this because his last tour ended on a down note and there is NO news of him even working on any new songs. He is a fool not to do it. This is as good a time as there ever will be. I hope they do it- even if it's just one show. Now, you can all tell me how full of crap I am. LOL.

It would be an abject disaster. The gang ethos, spriteliness of youth and heroic geekiness are now no more.

I adore Morrissey but the man in 2011 is simply not the same man who fronted the Smiths. Instead of looking to the past, why not embrace the future?

He continues making very good music within touching distance of greatness. There are four or five songs on YOR that could grace any Smiths record. The last thing he needs is Marr's middle age flab weighing him down.

A truly brilliant and current guitarist, in his prime - now that would be a different matter. I'd pay big bucks to hear Morrissey's crooning voice over some vicious glam rock riffs. But that's unlikely to happen with Jesse in the band.

  • ... $150million to appear in my back yard. They are still considering it, so snap up your tickets now, folks.

Coachella always seems to have either The Smiths or Bowie playing Ziggy Stardust in its entirety within their grasp, yet somehow, strangely, they never quite manage to confirm...I wonder why that should be? Possibly because it's all cynical, fabricated nonsense?

  • Hell will freeze over before Morrissey would perform on the same stage as Mike Joyce. I could see a Morrissey/Marr collabration with Boz and the Walker Boys filling the rest of the lineup. My heart tells me that Morrissey is done with worldwide tours and will likely stick to a string of short European dates.

  • It's a large sum.

How much money does Morrissey have? He doesn't collect any Smiths royalties (since 1996?) because of the old court ruling so you'd think he just gets a fair amount (but nothing huge) from his solo royalties and whatever a tour nets him.

Obviously he's rich, but this would sort him out through retirement and that's something he must surely consider?

Ugly for it to be about dollars and cents but everyone has to consider the future and lord knows he likes to live well...
  • Not sure if I like the Idea or not?

    We do only live once.

I just hope they can pull it off! :)

If I were him , I would snap jm hands off to reform because I don't see a new album tour etc any time soon , indeed , their is no album deal and I dont see a queue of people lining up to offer him and that excuse of musicians he calls a band any kind of deal.

Morrissey once said that he didn't want to go on forever and if push came to shove he would go away and mind his own business. The trouble is , people who have fame don't want to lose it
