Britain's Daily Telegraph and Daily Mirror both lazily repeating the recent ill-informed "reunion" rumours. I think every sane person at Morrissey-solo (are there any..?) knows full well that Moz will never again share a stage with Joyce and Rourke - and without them it's not The Smiths, is it?

One source said yesterday: “The very fact they are talking again is the most hopeful thing in years. The industry has been buoyant with talk of them getting back together.

Rumours in Irish papers, on Irish Radio (Newstalk, Galway Bay FM) that there could be a Smiths reunion in 2009. I know we've heard this one before, but please don't stop me! MSN Entertainment UK website is hinting at the same thing.
www.telegraph.co.uk says the same thing. They all seem to think that a 'one off reunion' for 2009 may be on the cards.

  • the rumour, doesnt make it true lol. Personally I dont believe Moz and Marr will ever make music again either and that's probably a good thing if Marr's form over recent years is anything to go by. Moz doesn't need the money, so why would he bother?

So why bother with this post? Why draw attention to these stories?

    Let's move on, shall we?

  • Morrissey and Marr would be great to see do something together again. I know that's not necessarily a popular opinion around these parts. But it would be interesting to see what they could come up with in 2009.

  • The Smiths as a four piece band will never perform together again. However a future Morrissey & Marr project is a less unlikely scenario. If they ever are tempted to work together again, instead of releasing a statement to that effect they should meet in secret to see if the old creative magic is still there. And if not they should just forget about it. =loki=

  • There is nothing in this.

When a friend emailed me with this rumour this morning I did wonder if maybe there was a chance of Marr joining Morrissey on his 50th in Manchester or something but having looked at the link I am more inclined to think there is nothing here at all. Just re-hashed rumours.

Apart from the factual errors - they are not as far as I am aware suddenly friends again. My understanding is that they have been on pretty good terms for many years now - the question is why would they bother reforming?

Bands who reform tend to need the money or are creatively redundant in their solo careers. This is the case with neither Morrissey or Marr.
Marr appears to be doing very well in his various projects and Morrissey has just made a new album and is rapidly selling out an extensive tour for next year.

The only two who would benefit would be Rourke and Joyce, and they probably wouldn't be invited anyway (well Joyce certainly wouldn't. I'd like to think Rourke would)
