The Smiths get top academic honours - NME.com

Johnny Marr joins Oscar Wilde and Al Pacino in unique 'club'
16.Oct.07 12:27pm

The Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr has been honoured by two universities in as many weeks.

Marr was honoured at a ceremony at Trinity College in Dublin where, after speaking onstage, he was made an Honorary Patron of the Trinity College Philosophical Society.

Marr follows the likes of Samuel Beckett, Bram Stoker, Oscar Wilde, Salman Rushdie and Al Pacino to the honour which rewards "individuals who have excelled in public life and made a worthy contribution to society".

Closer to home, the guitarist - who now plays with Modest Mouse - was made Professor Of Music at Salford University.

He will attend an induction ceremony tomorrow (October 17).

  • Damn, looks like I have enrolled at the wrong university again.
Johnny and Morrissey: la tĂȘte et les jambes?

Worthy contribution, anyone else? (There's still time. But not a lot.)

Am I switching, or even switching off the bulb? ...or does this mammoth task really require the intervention of a slooooooooow redhaired guy from Climate Sin Investigation?

  • Probably Mrs. Helena Figueiredo and his friend Rui Alves will not approve Marr's distinction.
As some might know, some years ago, this portuguese young couple used to post comments, on this site, against Mr. Marr.
And they would call themselves "Morrissey Fans"...would you believe it?

  • I think it is fair to say that Alain Whyte and Boz Boorer will never be honoured in this way. Marr is a legend, while Whyte and Boorer are absolute nonentities.

  • Morrissey has the handsome looks, the songs and the haircut we all dream about.

Incidentally, I am a huge fan of the Kebab shop owner on Coronation Street whom once acted on Brookside. His name then was Sinbad.

Does anyone know how I can contact his fanclub?

  • ...mentioned in the same breath. Morrissey would have loved sharing that distinction. Or, I wonder if that's entered Johnny's mind.
