Morrissey lyrics, as well as Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan, have been taken (seemingly out of context) to discredit David Camerons views on rap musics influence on violent youth culture.

BBC story article here:

Is there violence in Cameron's CD collection? - BBC News

heatrowguy writes:
The BBC attempt to refute David Cameron's (leader of the Conservative Party) claim that BBC Radio 1 DJ Tim Westwood's glorification of violence is leading to the violence in British youth culture. They have course have added to the anti-Morrissey bandwagon of the press in the last couple of weeks, and considering Cameron has come out as a Smiths fan, have attempted to show the violence of Morrissey.

Here are some excerpts:

"Sweetness, sweetness I was only joking when I said I'd like to smash every tooth in your head.

"Oh sweetness, sweetness, I was only joking when I said by rights you should be bludgeoned in your bed."

But this isn't a dangerous rapper straight off the streets of Compton, rather it is one of Mr Cameron's favourite artists, Morrissey, on the Smiths' Bigmouth Strikes Again.

But this is clearly OK because Morrissey is being ironic. He is a brainy sort and therefore this knowing reference to domestic violence is fine.

But Morrissey also sang: "The kind people have a wonderful dream, Margaret on the guillotine, cause people like you, make me feel so tired."

One might assume that musicians who seemed to advocate the execution of Conservative prime ministers might also present themselves as a target for Mr Cameron, though admittedly guillotines are some way down the ranks of street weapons.

All this is entirely apart from the unconfirmed allegations that Morrissey sent a wreath to the funeral of Ronnie Kray. If true, that would surely have been a moment of the most ironic irony.

  • you can't directly blame the likes of radio 1 djs for violence in society.

violence and crime in society are a direct result of the fact that we live in an enormously unjust society. and people who have nothing to lose will do things others deem 'crazy'. if you don't have value for your own life, how could you possibly be expected to see the value in others?

yes, the vast majority of people will criticise and attack the youths commiting the crimes, but they are only the product of a society thats values have been usurped by a force which has no empathy for the human race.

so watch as the nephilim/new world order/illuminati/global elite continue to divide and conquer the human race. as long as we're all fighting each other then they're fine. blame whoever you like, they like that, but just make sure you don't see the bigger picture.

read/hear michael tsarion, the freeman perspective, david icke, alex jones, texe marrs, etc etc if you wish to know the truth. the choice is yours...you're quite fortunate to have these names places in front of you waiting for you to explore...most people who set off on their awakening to the true reality of existence and the history of the control of humanity have to spend a long time finding out where to look. i've done some of the leg work for you.

  • I pay my licence fee for you to post this anti- Morrissey bullshit on your website. No wonder the BBC is in financial shit if you call this a well researched article.

He promotes violence, what a load of fucking shite.Sack this fucking Finlo Rohrer, cos he obviously knows shit about Morrissey's lyrics. If he did know shit he'd have mentioned the lyrics to Certain People I Know.

What a fucking specious badly presented peice of wank of an article.

Im so proud of myself! (?) and drunk...

  • ... and now wife beater. Sometimes I think it might be a good idea for Cameron to keep banging on about how much he likes Morrissey, because a) it keeps Moz safe from all the critical neo-cons who may think 'well, if a Conservative likes him we'll have to reserve our ire for someone else', and b) it's another addition to the charges that keep Cameron from being taken seriously by all the old school Conservatives; taken as part of that, the conservative Conservative won't vote him in.
This is highly speculative of course, and I quite admire the fact that people continue to berate Morrissey, because the moment he stops causing a stir is the moment he loses his iconic status in many fans eyes. But still, it hurts to hear him so vehemently criticised by certain facets of lunatic society. So anything that can keep him safer is alright by me ... you keep talking about him Cameron ... he'll be laughing somewhere in a bar in Rome.

  • I like that soemone is calling people out on the racist double standard in entertainment. Rappers are not allowed to sing aobut violence but morrissey, bruce sprinsteen, and the like can eithout being berated by conservatives and the media? does no one see the problem with this? rap music does not beget violence anymore than folk or pop or rock. petty racist politicians need to get with the times and if pointing out that mozz is just as violent as anyone is the best way to do so then preach it.

  • Does this make Moz a Gangsta? MWA as it were. And if so does that make me part of a posse? Hope so as the only other gang I have been a part of was the cub scouts.

The ridiculous media at its ridiculous best.

Now, i wonder if my bitch will make me a nice cup of tea.

  • I think that the real point is that there IS a problem with a small number of rap fans carrying weapons and actually killing each other.

To my knowledge Moz fans, Dylan fans, etc are not going around shooting and stabbing each other.

...and I need to be loved.
  • Whilst Morrissey may sing about violence in songs such as Sweet & Tender Hooligan & Big Mouth Strikes Again, he does redress the balance by singing "Wielding a bicycle chain, oh why won't you change, change & be nicer?" in the song "Such a Little Thing Make such a Big Difference" - pleading with the violent thug to change his ways. Morissey isn't pro violence. The BBC article just hasn't researched this area properly. I'm not a fan of current rap music, but I think Cameron has made rap music a scapegoat & it reminds of US politicians years ago when they also attacked rap music & made a right hash of it.

  • This is the endless retarded, yes retarded, aguement that puts music on an entirely different standard than any other form of entertainment. Remember the nonsense "National Front Disco" caused? If the same content was in a book or a film, or whatever, it would be a story, not the "crede of a racist singer"... Politicians and everyone else should shut up and deal with real issues, not blame music to make the old people that vote happy!
