This month's Q magazine features a list of the 100 Greatest Records of all time, with 'The Queen Is Dead' entering at number seven. However, there is also a section called 'Records That Were Nearly Great' and 'Strangeways' is listed as being one of them. Q say the album is "almost glorious" only because of Johnny Marr's inspired musical landscapes, which go way and beyond "the indie ghetto". However, what lets the album down, according to them, is Morrissey's "lack of inspiration" with lyrics that "veer into self-parody" and at times are "just shoddy".
The NME old guard really did move to Q didn't they?
Expect another 2-star review for Ringleader in March.
