The electronic/experimental indie band Xiu Xiu have covered The Smiths song "Asleep" on their upcoming live album of solo acoustic songs, "Life & Live", which will be released on April 15th thru Xeng Records. In the past Xiu Xiu have recorded covers of the Joy Division/New Order song "Ceremony", and Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car". http://www.xiuxiu.org/ ---

And it doesn't even matter to me what Morrissey sings, whether it is his song or someone elses, or who wrote the music for it.
I like Morrissey for the way he does what he does.

I've put it up for download at the above link for those interested. Its an alright cover, nothing special.
I'm a fan of Xiu Xiu's last album "Fabulous Muscles" - some of their earlier stuff is a bit too minimalist for me though.
also, here is their cover of Joy Division's "Ceremony", which I actually do think is very good:

Of course opinions are great, even (if not esspecially) ones that differ from the norm. But when you start using words like "pretentious" without citing reasons why they might be labeled so, the comment becomes worthless, and well, just flamebait really.
Sooo come on! What do you REALLY hate about Xiu Xiu's cover?? Lay it on thick!! Pretentious is a buzz word and just doesn't cut it.

jamie stewart also had a few other decent bands worth checking out, i reckon theyre easier to listen to than xiu xiu - IBOPA and Ten in the Swear Jar.
and i do agree that to call them pretentious is really ridiculous. people luuuhhvvv using that word because it makes them feel intelligent and witty, but it absolutely doesn't. it only makes themselves look pretentious by using it, if that makes any sense.
