The definitive answer... (Score:2, Insightful)
This is a reference to James Dean's answer to the same question: "No [I'm not homosexual], but I won't live with one hand tied behind my back".
He quotes from 'Victim' in 'Pretty Girls Make Graves', with the "nature played this trick on me" line (in the film, a hairdresser is being blackmailed over his homosexuality, and has decided in desperation to sell up and move to America; he tells Dirk Bogarde that he didn't want to be gay, but nature played a trick on him...).
Morrissey has said in the past that he is "just sexual", (which is my understanding of human nature too).
Honestly, I didn't know homophobia still existed till I went online and started reading offensive comments from Americans. One of the worst was from a twelve year old girl who wanted to know whether a certain actor was "gay, or just really English". (Suggested title for a Morrissey song: 'Really English Actors'). She obviously doesn't realise that all those butch Hollywood actors she admires are actually gay, while the "really English" ones are straighter than is good for them.
Thank heavens I live in a civilised country (Australia).

You have a few things to unlearn.. (Score:2, Interesting)
Let me explain :
The lyrics of Morrissey are like dreams - if you take them at face value analysing their references etc. and drawing specific definitive answers from them - remember they are your "OWN" answers, NOT definitive answers.
In IBEH, how do you know he's not referring to Irish slavery/ repression by Oliver Cromwell? which would seem altogether more likely..Do you know anything about Oliver Cromwell?. What has James Dean got to do with all of this? I suggest you know more about what colour socks Dean wore than Cromwellian crimes... Also, how many other people in the history of the universe could he be reffering to e.g. Nelson Mandela people who stand up for themselves what they believe in?
An annoyingly common problem in the interpretation of his lyrics, in my opinion - I qualify - is this 'Eureka sensation' - "oh I've found the obscure reference used in the lyric - this must be the answer - what was that film /book / actor quote all about.
This is the answer...oh oh - I knew it - oh I solved it...oh he's such and such....oh he must be this or that...
In order to satiate our own desire for our own (possbily preconceived and innocently illconceived) answers, it is the easiest thing in the world for you to project your own catgorisations onto the end of these little riddles you've created.
You say :
"all those butch Hollywood actors she admires are actually gay, while the "really English" ones are straighter than is good for them"
May I say...yes I will...you've overdosed on political correctness - one of the most sickening (to the uninflicted) illnesses of modern times.
Yeeuuuuuurrrgcccchh! For somebody with definitive answers what does "just sexual" mean anyway?

The definitive answer to all questions relating to Morrissey (including the sexual one) is that there is no definitive answer, as you say. That was my point, and why the Dean reference is so typical of Morrissey's wily ways; the ambiguity is what makes his lyrics so powerful - open to interpretation, and wilful misinterpretation (as in the case of politically motivated people who try to make out he's a paedophile, or a racist, or a cripple-hater).
'Just sexual' means mind your own beeswax.
I know virtually nothing about James Dean, apart from a biographical film I saw recently, which is where I found the line. I know nothing about him, but Morrissey knows a great deal, as I'm sure you're aware.
On the Irish politics question, this apparent combination of political and personal (sexual) persecution themes would seem to follow the pattern set in 'The Queen Is Dead' and 'A Rush and a Push and the Land Is Ours' (Irish Nationalist slogan of the 19th C).
I am of Irish descent (North and South, protestant and catholic), and very interested in the political history of the country. Yes, I do know who Oliver Cromwell was, and I'm certainly not a fan of his.
Everything in Morrissey's songs has multiple layers of meaning. The 'hands tied' idea could refer to almost anything, but as this is a 'statement' song, a sort of manifesto, I would guess it has to have a sexual meaning, as sexual politics were covered in all his other 'statement' songs previously. ('Shoplifters Of The World Unite' refers the law passed in 1984 which made the promotion of homosexuality through popular culture a 'listed crime' - Morrissey's, or the narrator's, 'only weakness'). The parallel with Dean's quote is too striking for an obsessive fan like Morrissey to have done it by mistake, I think.
If Morrissey wanted to make an outright statement such as "I am gay", "I am straight", "I am bisexual", or anything else, he could very easily do so. He doesn't, and this is a large part of his cunning method of playing the press and the public to stay where he wants to be. (Nothing wrong with that.)
Finally, I certainly do not suffer from political correctness, the most un-Australian philosophy imaginable, ridiculed in this country, as it thoroughly deserves to be. Not wanting people to be villified, beaten and murdered - hated for loving - is hardly a modern illness, it's just basic humanity.
I was severely disabled for several years, and suffered then, and now, from the implications of PC thinking - basically a politically device, imported from America, to withdraw funding from essential services by pretending disabled, and other vulnerable, people are 'as good as anyone else', or in other words, 'they should be able to fend for themselves' (when they obviously can't). This cynical thinking applies to all the needy groups who fall under the PC umbrella, and they're paying the price for other people's gullibility/hypocrisy/good intentions.
Cheers,
~Foxy

The Kevin and the Beansprout interview was better than nothing, I guess, but just as I feared it was yet another interview conducted by local radio jack-asses who looked at old interviews of Morrissey and asked the same questions all over again. The only thing new the Kevin and Beanball got out of him was that he watches Roseanne. Good show, for sure, but come on now, we're tired of people constantly asking him about television! We're sick of people asking him why he moved to L.A.! That stuff about the first song he wrote just gave me deja vu to his Modern Rock Live appearance in 1997.
When you look through Morrissey interviews you see that when people ask him something different or interesting he usually rewards the interviewer.
Anyway, I think Morrissey should consider going on a more intelligent, national radio program, such as NPR's Fresh Air.
Or, if he has the balls, consider going on the Howard Stern show. Tim Robbins had the guts to go on the morning, Morrissey! You could handle it! I know Howard will badger you about your sex life for an hour, but be brave!!! Howard is always nice when someone is interesting and witty.

From what I know and heard, Moz has always had a good amount of a Hispanic/Latino it following since his early days with the smiths.
I, a young Hispanic female have older family members who where teens when the Smiths formed. They where lucky enough to attend The Smiths concert when they passed thru California many years ago. Once the Smiths ended they followed Mozzer’s solo career, and attended his earlier tours. A have a friend (Hispanic) who has been a huge Smiths/Moz fan since the mid 80's. I don't know if you recall but in the early 90's Moz made an appearance at UCLA and things got way out of hand! Well, my friend who shall remain nameless was there! The newspaper made a report of what happened and included along a picture of all the madness...you can see my friend in front of the camera looking puzzled as to what was happening. Truly is LMAO moment.
Am I making any sense? I'd like to think we've been here from the start... If you ask many of the older looking Hispanics at his shows, you'll be surprised how many have been following Moz since his heydays. Some might have not admitted liking his music up until now. I know my older sister certainly would have never admitted to her peers of adoring Morrissey. Why? I haven’t a clue… My guess is things might have been different during her time. You know us Latin’s and our macho way of thinking! People would have said “Morrissey is for pussies!” you know how kids can be cruel growing up! But that’s just what I think. I was still in the cradle during the Smiths, but I sure did grow up listening to a lot of Morrissey!
All in all, I think KROQ had a lot to do with it. After all, they did have Moz in heavy rotation during his earlier days. And the reason you see many young Hispanic fans is maybe because they grew up listening to Moz thru siblings and/or friends who had siblings who grew up listening to the music.
I don’t see this as a big phenomenon, its just being in the right place at the right time.
