  • This was kind of inevitable, you know. A cover of a Smiths song. But did it have to from two Russian so-called singers who do a lesbian act to distract from their chronic lack of talent? This sounds almost as frightning as the night I saw a trly awful dance-version of "There is a light..." by some band who's name I've thankfully forgotten. I hope I shall never here this bile, for bile it shall be. Mark my words. But I probably will.
Morrissey, save us please. Make an album and show these apalling pop-pretenders that they are, and always will be the truly crashing bores of this world. Scum of the earth and very much cursed. Sincerely disgusted.

  • Oh my God, I can't believe this, I just read the article. These girls didn't even know the Smiths before a bunch of PRODUCERS showed the song to them !!! This can't be happening. I'm sorry, I always get worked up these things, I'm so sick of people destroying music. This makes me so angry!

  • Although in a way it could be (in a Morrissey sense of humour) amusing to see two Russian lesbians performing HSIN? on Top of the Pops, I cant say i'm overjoyed with the cover.
Having not heard it til half an hour ago, I was open-minded about it, (as are the Russin public by the looks of things) but having heard it... Oh well, enough said.

  • first let me say that i HATE Smiths covers. there have been only two that i've heard that i've liked ("What Difference Does It Make?" by The Mr.T Experience and "There Is A Light That Never Goes Out" by The Potatomen). so w/ that said, i LOVE this cover! yes, i know t.A.T.u. are a "novelty act". yes, i know that they have no idea who Morrissey or The Smiths are. this time i don't care. the album is good. their cover of "How Soon Is Now?" is great. if you haven't heard it give it a listen. keep an open mind. it will never be as good as the original but it's the best cover of "How Soon Is Now?" that you're gonna hear. sorry if this makes me less of a fan...

  • Anyone remember 'Hippychick" by Soho? That song sampled the main riff from HIN. I wonder if she had to pay any royalties for that, as it was the basis for the whole song.

  • I hope they get burned on the stake! And anybody who likes them must die with them.
But to be fair to them, this cover does have it's upsides. Because suddenly the prospect of global biological, chemical and nuclear war doesn't seem half as daunting anymore as it did before. Thank you, T.a.t.u., for ridding me of my fear of death by small-pox before my time. It all seems bearable now. Bin Laden's crimes against humanity pale in comparison to yours. In the words of Betjeman: Swarm over, Death!.

  • Was in HMV earlier and I was looking at the t.A.T.u sleeve notes, in the credits for How Soon is Now, Morrissey is only spelt with one 'r'. Only a small thing, but surely they could have checked before printing thousands of them.

to be honest i always thought this song had the most fantastic lyrics, but failed to have a good music behind it. i dont think i am alone there.
these girls version of the song is faster and isnt boring like the original tends to be when ur like past the 3rd minute.
and dont tell me im less fan of moz for that, i got all his albums solo or not

  • Well, as I happen to be from Russia I can say that it is GOOD if a few more people here would know who The Smiths (or Morrissey for that matter) are. To my knowledge, the only band here that did play Moz covers was St. Petersburg indie combo Wine, and they're long gone.
One of my mates who is into the Smiths the first time around (from mid-eighties) had also fallen for Tatu when they'd just first appeared, they "sang" in Russian then. So perhaps there is some similar chemistry working.
And no, I don't give a toss, and I didn't even hear their version.

  • Hmm it was interesting... sort of like Moz on helium. Cutting it to three minutes is a bit harsh- it definitely loses something by cutting off so much of the build up at the start. Apart from that, the only thing that confuses me, is why bother doing a cover version if you are just going to sing it in exactly the same way/ have similar music? Do something interesting with it. Or better still, leave it alone lesbians! ;-)

  • I really do think that Morrissey would not care one bit about this version being out in the public. Now whether it makes for good listening or not is a bit beside the point as I think we all know the original is the best.
But it raises the profile of the Smiths & earns them more $$$$...which I think they would be happy with. They could donate profits to PETA.
    p.s - I also think they're good looking girls!!

  • What in the world have Smiths fans around the world done to deserve this? First, How soon is now? is destroyed only to be used in that bloody tv-series (Warren Manor something) with that bloody BH90210 "actress". A terrible tv-series that only Justin Timberlake fans will ever want to watch. And now THIS?! TATU?! Oh my F****** God?! Who gave them the rights to let their fat russian fingers touch that song?? It's distasteful! It's blasphemous!
