Dear Moz Possee

We are delighted with your response to the new single That's How People Grow Up!

We are in the middle of a chart battle with all the crashing bores. Thanks to you we are doing very nicely as you continue to scoop up the 7" x 2 and CD singles formats however we need your support on the digital front which is where pop records have the edge.

We have two exclusive live versions available. You can buy Live at The Hollywood Bowl here and Live at The Roundhouse here.

Help us win the war.

  • Morrissey is old-fashioned. He wants to be on the charts. He just doesn't get the fragmentation of the music market and how that's made the chart system meaningless.

But he wants to be on the charts. What is so wrong with downloading the song and helping him out? If he's ever helped you, you've ever laughed or cried to his music... help him. This is his life.

US residents can download from 7digital.com and it will count toward his chart standing.

He certainly has shaped your life to some degree and influenced you to be who you are today. What you can to is push him up the chart and make him happier. Surely he has earned that from you. Please download That's how people grow up. For him.

  • This week I saw a picture of his arse adorning a dreadfully-chosen 'best of' whereas 15 years ago putting out 'best ofs' was considered an exercise in self-degradation and something to avoid drawing attention to if at all possible; 15 years ago, Morrissey would have sneered at these "ooh, buy my records!" pleas he keeps coming up with and possibly quit any record albel making them on his behalf; 15 years ago, Morrissey actually seemed semi-interested in writing music with an edge whereas today he's recycling bald, empty mid-paced rock tunes with lyrics that almost sound like you've heard them 15 times before and a distinct lack of lightness of touch. Where once there was delicacy, poise, self-deprecation and cutting wit, now there is brashness, turgid passive-aggressive anger/bitterness, self-parody and cliches.

I write as someone who adored Quarry and found positives in most of his work, including Ringleader and even Maladjusted.

I am eternally grateful for Morrissey's contribution to my life but I pity what I fear he is becoming. He is turning into a very sad, humourless man with a huge ego and a lack of vision and quality control.

Sort it out. Fire the band. Get out of your comfort zone. Stop imagining we wish to see you naked in 2007.

Let the third phase begin: whether it be grace or absolute self-destruction.

Play live almost never, put out record sleeves with a new theme (moving on from the olde England pictures on Smiths sleeveart and self-portraits on the solo stuff so far), try experimenting with the sound, and disappear into the background, popping up every 3 years to release a stunningly beautiful album.

Or disappear forever, publish the biography and finish your singing career.

For God's sake, don't destroy the image you so carefully crafted with crap sleeveart, cliched lyrics, turgid music and clothes befitting an ageing pub landlord.

  • i dont think morrissey should care about chart placings so much, you cant even compare him to the trash thats in the charts nowadays, hes in a whole other league. also the whole kwirky lyrics and song titles comments i keep reading- hes always done this, even in the smiths days. the cliches etc are done ironicly and in good humour. i think some people over react because they find it harder to accept coming from a slightly older man. hes doing what hes always done- making amazing songs.

Screw the charts and anyone who follows them. It's time to pay attention to what really matters. Good art is not meant to chart. It's meant to be loved by those who seek it, crave it and need it. It's meant to give faith to the faithless.

    -MOV

Why must people we respect, so desperately seek the affection of those who never wanted them? So much so that it alters every statement they make.

  • If Morrissey cares this much about the chart singles positions, there was a simple enough solution; include original songs on the Bsides.

So many sales will have been lost from fans, because of the Bsides offered ('inessential' live tracks).

    Sad but true.

  • that Morrissey actually has any personal involvement with this at all. I shudder to think that he would have even authorized such a crass and artless message. Even if he wasn't involved, the fact it happened is still saddening. Remember the days when Morrissey CARED tremendously about the artistry and the image he put out with every release? Even the groove etchings had to be just so. We know Moz is finicky about details, just look at his letter to the NME for evidence of that. This message could not possibly have been crafted by the same person. It appears he's contracted everything out to some 'management company' that purports to speak for him. It's frankly disrespectful to those of us who have spend 25 years of our lives following his career. Hopefully he'll say something to disavow any involvement with this ridiculous website and e-mail. I expect this kind of shill tactic from many of the other crashing bores that usually inhabit the charts. It just sounds bizarre coming from Morrissey.

The e-mail is rather crude and patronising.
As are some of the anonymous comments above that read is if written by a staff member trying to Rally the Troops.

It's all marketing. Sanctuary were criticised for not doing enough, Decca now for pushing too hard.

The vast majority of people buy music because they want to enjoy LISTENING to it. Because it touches them.

This single I don't like and won't buy.

Morrissey doesn't know I exist therefore can't be expected to care what I think. Why then should I feel any Loyalty to him? As long as enough people do like it and buy it, the single will succeed. But it will take good marketing, distribution and airplay to help it on it's way.
