Boy Booby prize for Moz fans - icWales
Mar 18 2006
Claire Hill, Western Mail

WELSH independent label Boobytrap plans to take drastic measures to get one of their bands to tour with Morrissey.

The former Smiths frontman has become a sudden fan of new band The Boyfriends and has asked them to support his European tour.

There's only one problem - they can't afford it.

Label spokesman Dean Proctor said, "Morrissey seems to really like the band and we got an e-mail from his people asking the band to do the European tour.

"But it will cost us about £10,000 and we've only got £222 at the moment.

"We're desperately appealing for anyone to help us. So far we've considered what we can sell what we own, even ourselves.

"At the moment we might do something on eBay and try to get the highest bidder to come backstage and meet Morrissey."

But the Cardiff label were adamant they'd get the money somehow to put their band on tour with the musical legend.

  • He's offered to finance bands on his tours before when they couldn't afford it. The Boyfriends are obviously second divison in his eyes.

  • Is this a record label or what? Who runs it?
They can't find £ 10,000? What banks are for?

  • Poor sods! This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for them. The stuff I've heard from this band is good. Also the band haven't done many (if any?) gigs outside UK so I hope they sort their finances out ASAP!

  • What a fucking record label is that?! A Label that can't raise 10 grand for their band to go on tour with Morrissey?!
Bad idea to try and raise some money on ebay "to get the highest bidder to meet Morrissey backstage".
    Joke.

  • You sing 'I Laaaav you' , don't you?
We can do some business here.
I am quite shy. I like a beautiful girl whose name I am afraid to write here, she has got red hair, she's sweet,.. oh my god how I love her...You could sing to her 'I looove you' na na naa naa for me, and maybe a bit of 'Remember' and I will pay you £10,000 for the service. You can support Morrissey then, and I will finally be able to kiss her and to hug her for the rest of my life.

  • Do they really think that opening for Moz will inspire enough Mozzerheads to buy the band's album to result in £10,000 of profit?

  • The Boyfriends are hidden gems. Their sound is unique, and I cannot begin to describe them.

I am shocked that they cannot raise the money. It would be very easy to get a loan. I am surprised Attack! cannot help them secure the loan. I don't know much about the music industry- but something sounds wrong, here.

I would be willing to shell out $1,500 to meet Morrissey. Actually more- but I cannot afford more at this very instant (I'm back in school).

The Boyfriends are awesome. Check them out. Much better than the Killers.

    Love,
    Ken

  • Moz advances them £10,000 and they pay it back against their cut of the earnings from the concerts. Or does Moz not pay his supporting acts...kind of like his road crew? :)

  • A lot has been made of Morrissey's visit to see them over on the Boyfriends site. I wouldn't be surprised if this was just a PR stunt from them just to try and get more interest in their band. If it is true, I don't think they should be surprised if Morrissey withdraws the offer. They have no sense of discretion.

  • Haven't Tiger Army and Sons and Daughters already been announced as the support acts?

  • ...what do you see in them? They're ugly, horrible clothes, basically a bunch of Topman Models.

  • I'd give £100 to see Morrissey / Boyfriends backstage at the Llandudno Gig! Start the bidding...

  • I work for Boobytrap - I'd just like to say that the tour was offered to us with only two weeks notice. It's not unusual for a small label like ours to be unable to raise cash at short notice. We have now raised the cash so our lovely band 'shall go to the ball'. The story in the Western Mail was originally intended to go in the business section as an appeal to investors. I know it's unusual for journalists to quote out of context (he he), but Claire Hill done us wrong.
We're glad we gave you all a laugh - you're all invited back to mine for monkey beers.
