from Music Week Morrissey will give a rare insight into the recording process of his forthcoming album Ringleader of the Tormentors on a dedicated channel 4 programme to air the week of the album's release on April 3rd. The 30 minute programme being broadcast on April 6th forms a core part of Sanctuary's promotional campaign for Morrissey's eighth studio album and will feature live performances of the album's four singles as well as a yet to be decided track from the artists extensive catalogue. In addition, Morrissey will take part in an interview with T4 about his career. The programme is the culmination of an extensive television schedule for the star in the lead up to release, which will incorporate a performance on Tonight with Jonathan Ross and Top of the Pops, an interview with BBC Newsnight and live show at Koko in London for a forthcoming episode of the Album Chart Show. Sanctuary Marketing Manager, Jennifer Ivory says that in planning the promotional schedule, it has been essential to target as broad an audience as possible "You will find Morrissey now in every demographic:young, old, straight, gay, male, female. It's our job to make sure there is enough visibility and cross marketing to reach these people" she says. Morrissey will headline the Radio Two showcase event at SXSW in Texas this week and has committed to interviews with Zane Lowe (Radio 1) Stuart Maconie (Radio 2) and David Frickle from Rolling Stone, who will interview him in front of a live audience at the event "Every year SXSW continues to grow to be a key event in UK music media" says Ivory. "We saw this as a great opportunity to raise awareness with both UK and US media. Morrissey being part of Radio 2's event at SXSW makes perfenct sense". Other activity includes Sanctuary partnering with iTunes to offer an exclusive b-side to fans who pre-order the album, while a number of bespoke podcasts will be released via different online sites. Exclusives will also run with Myspace, NME.com, AOL and Yahoo. On a traditional front, a three week TV advertising campaign will commence ahead of the album's release, complementing an extensive XFM campaign across the network, while a billboard campaign will run in key cities.

ringleader of the tormentors is end of the road (Score:0)
from 1983-1987, he progressed form the sound of the Smiths to the highly polished pop sound of strangeways; from 1988 through to 1996 we got viva hate, kill uncle, your arsenal, vauxhall and southpaw grammar along with a load of interesting singles and b sides; since 1997, Morrissey seems to have been stuck in a somewhat cliched indie rock rut. The sound is always a variation on a theme. I love Quarry and love Ringleader (so far) but they are both flawed albums, and neither has any real imagination or flair. They are far too middle of the road.
The more interesting moments of all post 1997 albums (irish blood english heart, dear god please help me, you know i couldn't last, trouble loves me, maladjusted) show a more unique sound and something slightly authentic and vibrant. He needs to explore that aspect of things more and come up with something completely new for 2007. He needs a new vision, new musicians and new ambitions.
Otherwise, this is the final swansong.
I won't be buying ROTT's follow-up if it's just the session musicians and Morrissey doing another indie rock record.
He needs to do something radical for 2007. He needs to disappear into a studio with Johnny Greenwood of radiohead, brian eno and a great bass player with ideas like Mani or someone and just get some interesting music down.
If I were Morrissey, I would use my new found status to try something extraordinary. No more pale radio imitations (pigsty), no more southpaw grammar dirges (youngest), just do something radical and new.
Imagine what morrissey, Greenwood, Eno and mani could do. They could even bring the new york dolls and tricky into the studio to add their own contributions if they want!
That is what Morrissey should be doing in his late 40s, not churning out more indie rock records in the same vein as the rest of his late 90s career.

I'm not sure what Tricky could bring to a new Morrissey album though?
I don't understand Butler's decision to turn Morrissey down - surely being credited with rejuvenating Morrissey creatively must be a very tempting accolade? Still, Marr may have put him off, though one wonders why. Perhaps it suits Marr to have Morrissey in the present situation as it enables him to claim, with justification, that the music is not up to scratch. Jesse was an uninspired addition - perhaps Butler should reconsider?
