From Lloyd's weblog:

Q - will you be giving a listen to morrissey's new LP, which was produced by tony visconti in rome and even includes ennio morricone orchestrating 1 track.

did you ever hear & enjoy any of morrissey's 90s/90s solo LPs? If you have a chance, definitely check out 1994's 'vauxhall & I' steve lillywhite did an outstanding production job there.

Im sure you cherish visconti's 70s LPs by bowie & TRex as much as morrissey does?

A - I suppose I will. I didn't hear the last one and wasn't really very interested. Vaxhall and I was maybe the last Moz record I bought. I found it rather dull. Not awful, I suppose I'd just heard enough Moz for a while.. Was that before the Ronson one? I liked that one. Visconti has his name on more great records than anyone I can think of. I hope they make something worthy of the collaboration.

    Interesting....

If you handed out lyric sheets of Lloyd Cole’s “These Days” taken from the album “Mainstream” (1987). Evaluate what they think the song is about. Explain the history of the song. Produced in 1987 during the peak of Aids hysteria years. Record company (Polydor) refused to include the song on the album as they felt it endangered Cole’s image as a potential chart star (ie. He must be gay) and potential sales and Polydor’s profits may suffer. Cole refused to release the album without the track. He and Polydor were in conflict.

I really hope Mr Cole did not endorse his record company to do this.

  • fantastically written, beautifully arranged, imaginative pop songs.
I saw his Commotions reunion gig last year (or 2004) and it was brilliant. Moz was a huge fan of Lloyd Cole the man, if not his songs.
I'd recommend his 'best of' compilation or his first album 'Rattlesnakes'. Here are my top 10 favourite LC songs:
    1. Jennifer we can't go wrong
    2. Are you ready to be heartbroken?
    3. Deux cheveux
    4. Brand new friend
    5. Living on juice
    6. Lost weekend in a hotel in Amsterdam
    7. Hey Rusty
    8. Charlotte Street
    9. Spanish wine
    10.This one's from the hip

  • She crossed herself as she put on her things
She has promised once before not to live this way
If she don’t calm down she will burn herself out
Like a forest fire, well doesn’t that make you smile
If you don’t slow down, I swear that I’ll come round
And mess up your place, let’s go for a spin
They say we shouldn’t even know each other
    And that we’ll be undone
Don’t it make you smile like a forest fire
I believe in love, I’ll believe in anything
That’s gonna get me what I want and get me off my knees
Then we’ll burn your house down, don’t it feel so good
There’s a forest fire every time we get together
Doo doo doo, doo doo doo doo doo doo
Doo doo doo doo doo, doo doo doo doo doo doo
Hey pick you up, put you down
Rip you up and spin you round
Just like we said we would
    ’cause we’re a forest fire
Believe you me, we’ll tear this place down
If we get caught in this wind then we could burn the ocean
If we get caught in this scene we’re gonna be undone
It’s just a simple metaphor, it’s for a burning love
Don’t it make you smile like a forest fire

  • Thank God we never hear anything of that posturing ponce in a polo neck sweater, Lloyd Cole, or his flippin' Commotions, for that matter.

Perfect Skin has some of the most cringeworthy lyrics ever penned.

Psuedo middle class coffee table piss poor angst.

Yes, he was as dull as he looked.

    No, he was even duller.

  • If that sad loser Llyod Cole ever came up with anything within the same stratosphere of quality as Vauxhall and I , well I certainly have never heard it.

Imagine Jimmy Carr fronting a third rate Johnny Marr wannabe combo and you'll have an idea of what this tedious tosser sounded like.

Probably found these days on a bargain bin eighties compilation.

One to avoid at all costs.

  • ...and there is NOT ONE Lloyd Cole song on it! However I have pretty much every song Moz has ever done on it so how can Lloyd Cole say anything negative about Morrissey's music?

Lloyd Cole SUCKS donkey dick and isn't even playing in the same ball-field as Morrissey. It makes me laugh when half-witted wanna be pop stars have something bad to say about class acts.

Did I mention that Lloyd Cole SUCKS and so does his music!!!

  • so because lloyd cole doesn't even criticise morrissey, but merely describes a single album as dull (based on the reasoning that he was tired of moz) then this justifies harsh criticism of him on personal and musical levels? i didn't realise i had to consider ever comment about morrissey a personal attack on myself to the extent that i blindly slag off anyone who doesn't think in exactly the same way about morrissey that i do. furthermore, i will have to ignore that fact that lloyd cole was lyrically fantastic, a pleasant singer, and wrote many good songs. you see, he's NOT morrissey. and that's HIS fault.

  • this man is totally cool.
i have eleven albums by the man.
he's just toured europe and has a new album out later in the year.
i recommend the orchestral 'dont get weird on me babe' (1991)
or the acoustic 'love story' (1995)
or the latest sublime and gentle 'music in a foreign language'.(2003)
    all greats.

he writes, play the instruments and mixes / co produces his stuff, hats off to the man.
and no he's not gay he's married wiv 2 kids.

cant stand people who slate people for nothing.

    Rattlesnakes (1984)
    Mainstream (1987)
    Lloyd Cole (1990)
    Love Story (1994)
    Etc (2001)
Music In A Foreign Language (2003)

It's a shame our nationality isn't shown with our messages, but am I right in presuming that all Lloyd-slagging off-messages in this thread are from American servers? It just seems that American and English/European Moz-fans have entirely different tastes.

Cole is a good lyricist. Very clever and observant.

I think you'd really, really like him. He has a lot of wit, different than Mr. M., more like Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen. I think he's a self-confessed folk singer nowadays... and he's very humble and serene in concert.
