Jazzy Jeff writes:
A young-looking Morrissey is on the cover of the current issue of the NME, as part of their 100 Greatest British Albums feature.

An anonymous person also writes:
Tickets for the smaller venues on the UK tour are advertised in today's NME.
Accompanied by another satisfying shot of Morrissey, which is however nothing on the classical violinist of last time around.

Uncleskinny also posts on the general board (original post):
Top 100 British albums; of interest here-

54 - Morrissey - Vauxhall and I
26 - The Smiths - Hatful Of Hollow
19 - The Smiths - Strangeways Here We Come
2 - The Smiths - The Queen Is Dead

and at number 1 - The Stone Roses - The Stone Roses.

I'll get a full list up later, along with the attendant quotes from Johnny Marr. Also there's another HUGE full page advert for the provincial dates - nice Moz picture where he seems to be coughing or something

Hello - here's the countdown (in chart-style reverse order!) from todays NME article on the top 100 albums by British bands. Some of the listing have comments/interviews, so I've appended the appropriate ones. I just can't find the bit where the NME describe how they arrived at this list. As always with these things I think they suffer from the same contemporaneity that others suffer from, like the Arctic Monkeys at number 5.

There's a good documentary on Shane McGowan that I saw a few years back called If I Should Fall From Grace. In it, they talk about how a band like the Pogues could only be formed outside of Ireland. Something about the idealistic nostalgia that comes from feeling like a foreigner.

The Smith's mercurial debut album is, as far as I am concerned, the greatest and most important(to me at least) album released within the 30-odd years I've been around. NOTHING compares to the life-changing moment when I first heard it in it's entirety, and now, some 22 years after it's release, I seriously doubt that anything ever will. It is the record that changed my life and I will fight it's corner as rock's most magisterial work until the day I die.

Not only do I consider it to be better than 'The Queen Is Dead', but it's a thousand times better than that vastly overrated, flimsy, paper-thin, candy-floss-light nonsense they call 'The Stone Roses'.

Although I disagree that "The Smiths" is better than "The Queen Is Dead", I have to agree that its omission is outrageous.

This list obviously takes into consideration other factors besides the inherent quality of the music. Albums that are seen as iconic or seminal tend to get a bit of play with this list, so why isn't "The Smiths"? You were far from the only one whose life was transformed when they heard it.

With regard to the album itself, as good as it is, I think "The Smiths" is given short shrift for a few reasons which I think are valid. Chiefly the objection has to do with the production; most critics agree the production was poor, but more importantly so do Morrisey and Marr. The versions played live and for the various radio sessions are, for the most part, superior than the studio versions. In some cases-- like "Reel Around The Fountain", "Still Ill", and "What Difference Does It Make?"-- far superior.

Thus, if "The Smiths" stood alone, it might be a classic. But the better versions all but nullify the studio mixes. How can an album be great when the artists don't like the production and have committed better versions of several songs to vinyl? Even the Troy Tate version of "Pretty Girls Make Graves", which staggered to the surface three years later, was better than the original!

I'm talking about the general view, however. From your story I'm sure all of what I've just typed is rubbish in your mind. The versions of the songs you fall in love with will always be beyond criticism; in my case, I owned "Hatful of Hollow" before "The Smiths". But in the context of "Best Albums" debates like this, the battering taken by "The Smiths" is somewhat justified. As great as it is, "The Smiths" could have been much better than it was, and the people who believe that more strongly than anyone are Morrissey and Marr.

Joe Dallesandro *is* rather juicy, though.

And, of course, placing an album that was released 2 days ago in a list of the 'greatest British albums of all time'. It's ludicrous though, having the Arctic Monkeys higher than... The Smiths, Morrissey, Bowie, The Jam, and so forth.

I did like the mention of the Redskins' 'Neither Washington Nor Moscow' album though.

How did a great album like Maxinquaye slip so far behind a mediocre album like the verve's? Well, it's because Tricky released a bunch of crap albums and fell out of fashion, while Ashcroft went on to achieve "legendary status" for some peculiar reason. "A Northern Soul" has a few good songs on it - but it's no great achievement and it's not a patch on "A Storm in Heaven" let alone "OK Computer" or some of the other albums below it.

Although liking the ROSES quite a lot, at least their early stuff, I've never been too fond of their -or more precisely Squire's- artworks, except for "Made of stone", maybe. Seeing their debut cover artwork on top of the list makes me actually wonder who decided 'bout that. On the other hand seeing JOY DIVISION's "Closer" ranking among the 70s is a miracle to me, as -except for most of THE SMITHS' and JD's backcatalogue of course!- no other record cover to date did capture the album's musical feeling and mood as that one. Shame on thou, NME representatives! Another proof that the NME shouldn't deal with ANYthing Metal related is the factual inclusion of BLACK SABBATH's "Paranoid", because altough I like 'em to death, that one's as crappy as can be. What about "Vol. 4" or especially the debut? ANGEL WITCH's first one also had a killer cover artwork, but I'm getting a little off-topic now. At least I can agree upon "The Queen Is Dead", when it comes to albums, charting highest. Still my all-time fave must be the "This Charming Man" sleeve. That's what I call beautiful packaging!!
