‘RINGLEADER OF THE TORMENTORS’ – THE ULTIMATE GUIDE

Exclusive! Everything you need to know about the new Morrissey album.

Morrissey has completed his new album ‘Ringleader Of The Tormentors’ and NME is first with the full track-by-track guide. As we revealed in last month’s exclusive in-the-studio report, the album will now be released on April 3rd. Recorded in Rome with producer Tony Visconti, it shows a change in direction and features a guest appearance from legendary film soundtrack composer Ennio Morricone.

“I’m inspired by Rome because it’s the exact opposite to Los Angeles, where I’ve spent so much time,” Morrissey said recently. “As stunningly beautiful as Los Angeles is, it is also essentially a police state. Rome has struck me as being a very safe city, and not at all uptight, which is a contrasting relief.”

Here, NME’s guide to the album. A single, ‘You Have Killed Me’, will precede the release on March 27th.

  • The review is kind of vague. Yes, it explains the each track, but I was hoping for more. I want to know if the song was good, did they like it. In other words, don't just describe the song; tell us how you feel about it. The only comment they have about the album as a whole is "An unexpected closer to an extraordinary album, it leaves the listener wondering: is the world ready for a cheerful Moz?"

Just looking for more of a description.

  • How do these descriptions compare to the descriptions of other songs on other albums? Did we expect Vauxhall to be as soft and lush based on previews? Was Quarry pretty much what people said it was in the previews?

Can somebody find links to other written previews?

I'm very hopeful, but sometimes words are deliberately over-flattering...

  • It seems like Jesse Tobias was the missing piece that was the key for Morrissey in making a great album.

Alain certainly deserves much credit as well, but things have gotten much better with the addition of the new collaboration.

  • Hi people! My name is Victor and I teach Philosophy here in Brazil. Well, I've got a doubt. In Morrissey's lyrics, I could cite some philosophical references specially the Existentialism philosophy like Sartre, Kierkegaard, Camus and Nietzsche. However, I'm not sure Morrissey is a Philosophy reader. i know he loves poetry and literature.
Is there anybody at this website who knows any Morrissey's comments on philosophers or thinkers?

  • find this guys review awkward; like he was wanting to take the piss, but holding back?
I can't pinpoint one thing in particular, but in his choice of words and quotes from the songs, he made the album sound a bit childish, and whilst I know it won't be (as it's Morrissey we're speaking about here) the whole thing made me uncomfortable. It always seems like the NME have double standards with the man ... I think this reviewer isn't very fond of him and wants people to write in to the letters page next week slagging Moz off.
It could just be me being overprotective of my favourite artist, but still ... he's the most intelligent and interesting pop star we have (just read that opening comment about Rome vs LA for eloquence) and I won't have scummy journos doing him down.

  • but secretly dreading the lyrics?
the music sounds fascinating. it sounds like there should be some fantastic melodies and interesting arrangements.
but the lyrics sound a bit facile and a bit humourless to me. every other song seems to be about killing or being killed!
I like the titles of the b-sides so, perhaps like with Quarry, we'll have to look there for the really good songs...

  • I've heard the record in its entirety many times and I don't think it sucks very much. Neither do my friends, who've heard it as much or even more than I, and in fact, we're quite proud of it.
