Morrissey announces Whitehaven gig - The Whitehaven News

Excerpt:

The venue confirmed it was the icon himself who asked to play in Whitehaven. Paul Tomlinson, from the Civic Hall, said the news was “unbelievable”.

Concert promoter SJM had contacted Paul to pencil in a possible date. “They said that they had booked Morrissey to play in Middlesbrough Town Hall on that night but he had said he wanted to come to Whitehaven Civic Hall,” said Paul.

The venue has been attracting some top name acts recently such as Echo and the Bunnymen, Super Furry Animals and Lloyd Cole, and Paul presumes this impressive line-up had helped secure the gig.

“It’s the biggest thing for the Civic Hall in a long time. I think that you would be hard pushed to find a similar venue of our size to attract the names that we have.”

  • Middlesbrough Town Hall would have been such a good night. The Smiths played there in 1986.

  • I can now see how Middlesbrough might have been the first plan. I did wonder why he was going to play Whitehaven on the West Coast one night and then the very next night play on the East Coast. Obviously the plan was Middlesbrough then Gateshead which makes sense but Whitehaven then Gateshead seems very odd and a hell of a drive but I guess he will travel in a tour bus overnight cause there ain't a lot in Whitehaven.
